I think the concept of a company enriching itself financially through the end of the world is simply brilliant. It's practically end-stage capitalism.

In Cooper's time, the US has been at war with "the Reds" Communist China for 10 years. Cooper himself was in the war, he was fighting in Alaska against China. Everybody on earth is in constant fear that the war between US and China would escalate to nuclear war. VaultTec became rich and powerful by using the fear of nuclear war to sell vaults. The news in this episode mentions there are peace talks between US and "the Reds", but if the peacetalks go through VaultTec can't sell any vaults. The VaultTec Corporation will go bankrupt if the war ends, so they have a financial interest to make sure it doesn't. It's capitalism and the Military industrial complex. Cooper's wife thinks if VaultTec is going to make sure the US-China war never ends it's inevitable that one side will launch nukes. So she wants to protect her family.

Reds was a term for communists during the cold war. Soviet Union had a red flag and red was the colour of the revolution. Much love for both of you and the reactions.
