Someone in chat mentioned that Markus came from a place of privilege while doing the Jericho scenes, but I’d have to disagree to an extent. Markus was not abused by his owner - Carl is a wonderful person clearly, and wouldn’t lay a hand on him. As well, having a secure, large home is definitely a privilege. But just because the cage is pretty, doesn’t mean it’s not a cage. He was still abused by everyone else - as seen on the first clip of him getting the paints back in episode 1 - the same way other androids are. If anything, the Carl situation was still bad in a different way. Markus could never leave Carl due to his legal responsibilities to care for him being ENCODED in his body. Not to mention, the fact that Carl treats him so kindly would make it hard to find an excuse to leave, had he gone deviant before the situation with Leo. As much as I believe Carl would want him to be a free person, he still needs someone to care for him 24/7. He solely relies on Markus, and that may have made it harder if Markus had made the choice to leave - knowing he was abandoning the one person he was designed to love. He definately “had it better” than the majority of deviants, but he WAS still a slave. His job to cook, clean that entire mansion, run errands that result in his own injury. Not Carls fault, but still definitely not as privileged as some in the fandom make him out to be.
