maybe hot take??...but the addition of Yuri and his feelings towards Yor is the shows biggest downfall 😩 I get so uncomfy when he's on my screen. This type of "humor" is a big miss for me lol
I must admit that the Yuri episodes don't rank highest for me, but everything else is so amazing that it doesn't bother me too much. Just seeing sleepy Anya erases every bad thought I had before... 😍
I imagine most people would easily say Spy Family is very unrelatable considering the cast is a spy, assassin, and telepath, but when you narrow it down to all of just being extreme overthinkers, that's where a lot of viewers end up relating to it, and obviously the family aspect of it is as well.
The episode I dread having to show people. Like “spy family is so fun and good (except the brother who is in love with his sister…)” it’s a well known trope in anime called “siscon” where the brother is obsessed with the sister to a level of utter perversion and it’s written off as comedic, but yea it’s uncomfy. Someone is gonna come defend Yuri and say “but the trauma” “she was his mother” yada yada. Listen… that’s a fine explanation for codependency, but what Yuri has is well beyond that. If he treated his ACTUAL mother this way, the hills would have eyes. Slamming his head into a locker thinking about his sister’s sex noises. “I can’t bear you kissing ANOTHER MAN?!” “Her lips belong to you for now?!” And he damn near orgasms anytime she touches or speaks to him. Almost every anime has at least one thing we pretend doesn’t exist (mei mei and ui ui in JJK, Frieren’s overly animated feet), and for a lot of us, that’s yuri’s siscon in this anime. I legit just skip his scenes with Yor when I rewatch Spy Family. BUT… if you can look past Yuri’s cringe, it’s an amazing series.
