๐ŸŽ‰ MindWare Version 0.3.6 (Supporters Only Beta 1)

I wasn't expecting to take this long to release an update, and I definitely wasn't expecting the changelog to be the biggest one yet.

The in-game bug reporting tool I built a few releases ago is working better than I hoped. The recent public release brought in a large number of detailed reports, and as I started working through them, I kept finding more and more stuff to fix. What started as a handful of individual bugs turned into a deep dive through the entire codebase once I realized there were systematic performance issues affecting every player.

The main culprit were event listeners and timers that were never cleaned up. Almost every minigame, animation, and UI widget in the game was stacking new event handlers on top of old ones every time you visited a passage or re-rendered a component. Play for 20 minutes and you might have dozens of orphaned keyboard listeners, animation loops, and interval timers running in the background doing nothing useful. Play for a few hours and your CPU usage would climb to absurd levels. On top of that, some systems (PornNexus, PeekStream) were serializing large data caches into your save file on every visit, which meant save files kept growing until they risked hitting the browser's localStorage limit. Most of these issues were invisible during short play sessions, which is why they went unnoticed for so long. But over a full playthrough they added up.

โš ๏ธ At this point, the biggest issues should be addressed, but I can't guarantee the fixes are perfect because I was only able to playtest up to chapter 2, plus about half an hour after that. It's entirely possible there's a new soft or hardlock further into the game. I'll continue playtesting, but this release is truly a beta, so be cautious โš ๏ธ

There's no new playable content in this release, and I apologize for that. I have a new chunk of the story almost ready, and you'll get to play it next week, but the bugs simply took too much of my time to finish it properly.

There is, however, a new supporter verification system. Instead of the old password-based unlock, you can now activate Extra Options through Patreon's standard OAuth flow (one click, no passwords to copy). The connection is handled entirely through Patreon's official API. MindWare never sees your Patreon password, doesn't store any personal data, and only checks whether you have an active subscription. If you're not comfortable with OAuth or prefer to stay offline, there's also an activation code option.

To use the new verification system, download the new version and attempt to access Extra Options. The rest will be explained to you there.

The reason I built this is that, since the early days of MindWare, I kept getting messages from players and supporters warning me that the password-based system was easy to bypass. I've finally become experienced enough to implement something more robust, and the fact that it's also more convenient for both of us is what tipped the scales. No more juggling unlock passwords. I'm personally really happy with how it turned out, and I hope you will be too. It's a first version, so bugs are to be expected, but everything seems to work fine on my end. I'd appreciate it if you could try it and let me know how it goes.

With some luck, there won't need to be another bug-focused release like this for a while. You really deserve what you're here for (playable content), and it's my priority to give it to you. That said, the bugs, especially the cumulative performance issues, were impossible to ignore. Fixing them now rather than later means fewer bug reports going forward and more time for content development. Hopefully.

Don't stress on not adding new content with this release! It looks like you put a TON of work in, sometimes you need to have a patch that's just bug fixes! I wish some of the 'normal' games I'm playing now, that are in early access, would remember that hah.
