FRANCE/POL/SEC - Police fire teargas at French protesters on biggest day of school demonstrations
https://www.reuters.com/world/europe/france-braces-day-school-blockades-street-protests-2026-10-06/

Police fired tear gas at protesters blockading French high schools on Tuesday as students, teachers and parents took to the streets on the biggest day of action in a wave of demonstrations against understaffed and dilapidated classrooms.

In Marseille and Nantes, protesters held up signs marked with "The ‌state has killed national education" and other messages, in largely peaceful rallies. In Toulouse, parents linked arms at the front of a march through the city.

But in Strasbourg, Lyon and Rennes, the demonstrations at times turned violent, with police firing tear gas and protesters lighting fires in the streets and hurling projectiles.

"There is such a gap between the elites and us," said Hugo Vetzel, a recent high-school graduate in Strasbourg.

The protests began in September in the deprived suburbs of Paris, before spreading nationwide, presenting a major challenge to President Emmanuel Macron's cash-strapped government at a time when it faces strong economic headwinds.

The High School Students Union said more than half of France's high schools were blockaded or would close for the day. Some local education authorities have tried to move classes online.

GERMANY/POL/SEC - Germany's ex-spy chief arrested for espionage
https://www.dw.com/en/germanys-ex-spy-chief-arrested-for-espionage/a-79560278

Police have arrested the former head of Germany's BND foreign intelligence agency, August Hanning, on suspicion of espionage, the federal prosecutor's office announced Tuesday.

Hanning served as the agency's chief from December 1998 to November 2005 before moving to the Federal Interior Ministry, where he worked as state secretary until November 2009.

According to a statement from the prosecutor's office, the 80-year-old faces charges including espionage, disclosure of state secrets, attempted treason and working as a secret service agent.

It did not say which foreign intelligence service he is suspected of working for.

The statement added that another former high-ranking BND employee was also arrested on suspicion of providing hundreds of classified documents to Hanning after his tenure as spy chief ended in exchange for payment.

DW's chief political editor Michaela Küfner, reporting from a government press briefing on the arrest, described the case as Germany's "biggest espionage scandal of the century."

US/UK/IRAN/SEC - Potential Iranian Drone Attack Led to Exit of U.S. Aircraft From British Air Base
https://www.nytimes.com/2026/10/05/us/politics/iran-drone-attack-us-uk-base-fairford.html

The United States abruptly withdrew all 12 B-1 Air Force bombers from an air base in southern England based on new information that commanders received about a potential drone attack ordered by Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, according to U.S. and British officials.

The suspected attack was part of a complex, multipronged Iranian plot to strike aircraft and kill some of the several hundred American personnel stationed at the base, R.A.F. Fairford, the officials said, speaking on the condition of anonymity to discuss operational matters. All of the Air Force bombers were withdrawn over the weekend.

Some of the officials said they believed that the plot was loosely modeled on an audacious attack that Ukraine launched against Russia last year when it smuggled drones deep into the Russian heartland and launched them from semi trucks. The attack destroyed or damaged at least a dozen aircraft, including many of Moscow’s nuclear-capable strategic bombers, on runways in Siberia and Russia’s Far North.

Vice President JD Vance said on Monday that the Pentagon quickly moved the bombers “out of an abundance of caution trying to protect our guys.” He accused Iran of plotting attacks against the United States but stopped short of commenting on any details about the most recent threat.

RUSSIA/LITHUANIA/NUKE THREAT - Kremlin warns Lithuania that its move to lift a nuclear arms ban risks further escalation
https://www.reuters.com/world/europe/kremlin-warns-lithuania-that-its-move-lift-nuclear-arms-ban-risks-further-2026-10-06/

The Kremlin on Tuesday warned that a preliminary decision by NATO member Lithuania to lift a constitutional ban on hosting nuclear arms on its territory could lead to ‌a new round of escalation in the region.

Lithuania's parliament voted in favour of removing the ban on Tuesday, in a first of two ballots required for the change.

Asked by reporters how Russia viewed that development, as well as a proposal floated this month by US President Donald Trump to build an American military base in the Baltic country, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said:

"If the military infrastructure of what is, in effect, NATO's leading country (the US) is moving closer to our borders, then, of course, this cannot be perceived as anything other than a step towards escalating tensions."

CHINA/LAOS/MIL - Attack aircraft, military vehicles visible at new China-Laos base, satellite images show
https://www.reuters.com/world/asia-pacific/attack-aircraft-military-vehicles-visible-new-china-laos-base-satellite-images-2026-10-06/

Light attack aircraft and military vehicles have arrived at the new China-Laos joint training facility announced last Tuesday, according to satellite images reviewed by Reuters.

The images, taken by commercial satellite provider Vantor, show what security analysts believe are eight K-8 light attack jets ‌and more than two dozen support vehicles on a runway that is still being built — China's latest expansion of its overseas military presence.

Taken on September 30, the day after China's defence ministry announced it had set up the facility at Ban Keun outside the capital Vientiane, the images also show extensive construction work around the runway.

The swift development of the new facility is being closely watched by regional military attaches and security scholars, some of whom say its construction potentially marks China's first fully fledged overseas military base in Southeast Asia.

Despite more than 20 years of intense military modernisation, China is widely perceived to lack a strong network of overseas facilities beyond the South China Sea, port access in Ream, Cambodia and a logistics base in Djibouti.

US/MIL/ECUADOR/COLOMBIA - U.S. Sends ‘Hunter-Killer’ Drones to South America to Target Cartels
https://www.nytimes.com/2026/10/06/world/americas/us-reaper-drones-colombia-ecuador-cartels.html

In a sign of the Trump administration’s new focus on combating Latin American cartels, the U.S. military has moved a number of MQ-9 Reaper drones from Africa to Colombia and Ecuador, U.S. officials said.

MQ-9 Reaper drones are often used for precision strikes like the lethal operation that killed Maj. Gen. Qassim Suleimani, who led the powerful Quds Force of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps, in 2020. The aircraft, which can cost up to $50 million, are in short supply after losses in the Iran war, where at least 45, or about a quarter of the overall U.S. fleet, have been destroyed.

The transfer was described by two U.S. officials familiar with the decision who asked not to be named because they were not authorized to speak publicly on an operational matter.

The move comes as the administration ramps up its military offensive against Latin American trafficking groups. The top U.S. military commander for most of Latin America, Gen. Francis L. Donovan, has said that the United States plans to expand operations from strikes on boats to strikes on land.

TURKEY/KSA/PAKISTAN/YEMEN/MIL - Turkiye, Pakistan agree Saudi Arabia military deployment under Mecca pact
https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2026/10/5/mecca-alliance-agrees-to-activate-collective-deterrence-measures

Turkiye, Pakistan and Saudi Arabia have agreed to activate “deterrence measures” under a mutual defence pact and rapidly deploy forces to the Gulf kingdom to counter attacks by Yemen’s Houthis.

The decision was announced on Monday after the three countries’ defence and foreign ministers held an emergency meeting in Riyadh. It marked the first time the alliance – known as the Mecca Alliance for Defence – has been invoked since it was signed on August 7.

The agreement declares that an attack on any of the three nations will be treated as an attack on all, mirroring a central provision of NATO’s founding treaty.

“The committee agreed to activate collective deterrence measures, within the framework of the Alliance, in response to the attacks and all those responsible for them,” Khalid bin Salman, Saudi Arabia’s defence minister, said in a social media post.

He said the alliance had “reaffirmed the solidarity and unity of our countries, in confronting the heinous attacks against the Kingdom, and holy sites”.

INDIA/POL - Why people across India are taking to the streets again
https://apnews.com/article/india-sir-cjp-election-commission-gyanesh-protests-66aa3c2d15edf12845b2a08297720793

Protests have spread across India in the past week as opposition parties and civil society groups demand the resignation of the country’s election chief over alleged manipulation of voter lists.

The campaign has been led in part by India’s “Cockroach” youth movement, which previously organized street protests that forced the education minister to resign in July.

Protesters demand the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and an end to the poll body’s ongoing revision of voter lists. They accuse the revision could disenfranchise millions of voters and benefit Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ruling Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party, or BJP. The commission and government deny any wrongdoing.

Here’s what to know:

Voter list changes fueling the protests

India is the world’s largest democracy with hundreds of millions of people voting in national and state elections. The Election Commission plays a central role in determining voter eligibility and administering elections, making changes to electoral lists politically significant.

The dispute centers on a nationwide voter list revision known as the Special Intensive Revision, or SIR. It began last year in the eastern state of Bihar ahead of local elections and has since expanded to most of India’s states and federally administered territories.

CANADA/POL - Parti Québécois Returns to Power, Reviving Quebec Sovereignty Push
https://www.nytimes.com/2026/10/05/world/canada/quebec-election-parti-quebecois-separatism.html

The separatist Parti Québécois won the provincial election in Quebec on Monday, possibly setting the stage for a referendum on the French-speaking province’s independence from Canada in the next few years.

Voters hungry for change returned the Parti Québécois to power for the first time in 12 years, even though they displayed little interest in the commitment of its leader, Paul St-Pierre Plamondon, to hold a referendum on secession from Canada.

The Parti Québécois fell short of clinching a majority, winning 59 seats out of 127 in the provincial legislature, according to incomplete results late Monday. That could make it difficult for Mr. St-Pierre Plamondon to fulfill his campaign promise to hold a referendum after President Trump leaves office in 2029 and the economy stabilizes.

A Parti Québécois minority government could struggle to stay in power for a full four-year term. Mr. St-Pierre Plamondon will also govern after winning only about 28 percent of the popular vote, according to incomplete results, making it hard for him to claim a popular mandate.

YEMEN/KSA/MIL - Saudi-backed Yemeni forces expel Houthi rebels from several areas around key strait, officials say

Forces of the Saudi-led coalition fighting in Yemen have recaptured several key areas around the strategic Bab el-Mandeb Strait from Iran-backed Houthi rebels, Yemeni officials said Monday, while the Houthis claimed attacks on Saudi oil facilities, airports and military bases as fighting escalated on Yemen’s western coast.

The Yemeni officials said forces allied with the internationally recognized government retook the crucial town of Dhubab just north of the strait, a vital shipping route that connects the Red Sea with the Gulf of Aden.

They also captured the towns of Bab and Hadeid, said the officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak to reporters. Witnesses said they saw government tanks and forces entering the towns.

The government push came as part of a major offensive launched early Monday under air cover by a Saudi military coalition.

GERMANY/FRANCE/CHINA/TRADE - Germany, France Push New Trade Weapon Before EU-China Talks
https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2026-10-05/germany-and-france-push-trade-weapon-to-bar-china-market-access

Germany and France are urging the European Union to adopt new powers that could sever China or other countries from its single market, as the bloc’s two biggest economies adopt a more confrontational stance ahead of talks in Beijing.

The suggestion came in a letter, seen by Bloomberg News, sent Monday to European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, the top EU executive.

“We need a credible instrument in the hands of the Commission to allow for decisive and systemic reaction,” the letter reads, suggesting “powerful measures up to an immediate cut-off from the internal market if needed.”

It also calls for an instrument that would force Europe to reduce various supply chain dependencies on foreign countries.

While the letter doesn’t specifically mention China, the EU is currently exploring ways to rebalance its trade relationship with the world’s second largest economy. Having Germany and France aligned behind these proposals will give them significant heft going into an EU summit next week, where leaders will discuss the issue.

The proposals came to light just before EU Trade Commissioner Maros Sefcovic arrives in Beijing this week for two days of talks with Chinese officials to get a sense of where things stand ahead of the upcoming European Council meeting.

China is on a week-long holiday and its Ministry of Foreign Affairs didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment outside business hours.
