Sept. 22, 2026 - Daily News Digest

On this day: in 1979, the Vela incident—a bright flash resembling the detonation of a nuclear weapon--is observed near the Prince Edward Islands. Its cause is never determined.

QOTD: The pair "crossed red lines and basic limits," [China’s state-run news agency, Xinhua] said, adding that their "political and economic wrongdoings were intertwined, and corrupt self-enrichment coexisted with dereliction of duty and abuse of office".

KSA/ENERGY - Saudi Arabia restarts East-West oil pipeline, sources say
https://www.reuters.com/business/energy/saudi-arabia-restarts-east-west-oil-pipeline-resume-exports-yanbu-sources-say-2026-09-22/

Saudi Arabia has restarted operations at its East-West Pipeline and could resume exports from the Red Sea port ‌of Yanbu later on Tuesday, three sources briefed on the matter said.

Drone attacks forced Saudi Arabia to shut its East-West Pipeline on September 13, halting crude loadings at the kingdom's Yanbu port.

The resumption of supplies on Tuesday helped to drive selling on global oil markets, traders said. Brent crude futures fell by more than $2 a barrel to its lowest since September 8.

MORE/GIFT LINK: What Is Saudi Arabia’s East-West Pipeline and Why Is It Rocking Oil Markets?

Saudi Arabia is running tests on a critical oil pipeline that was recently knocked out by drone strikes, a step toward restoring flows and reviving a major export route that bypasses the Strait of Hormuz.

The East-West pipeline is being tested for structural integrity and pressure, according to people familiar with the matter. If successful, crude exports from the Red Sea port of Yanbu could restart within a couple of days, they added.

The pipeline has become one of the world’s most important pieces of energy infrastructure during the Iran war, serving as a workaround for sharply curtailed tanker traffic out of the Persian Gulf.

CHINA/MIL/POL - China expels two top generals from party and military, alleging disloyalty and corruption
https://www.reuters.com/world/china/china-expels-two-top-generals-party-military-alleging-disloyalty-corruption-2026-09-21/

China has expelled two top military leaders, Zhang Youxia and Liu Zhenli, from the Communist Party and the military, an official announcement showed on Monday, citing alleged disloyalty, corruption and other ‌serious disciplinary breaches.

Zhang was second-in-command under President Xi Jinping as vice-chairman of the Central Military Commission - the supreme command body - and has long been seen as Xi's closest military ally. Liu was a CMC member and the chief of staff of its Joint Staff Department.

Probes into Zhang and Liu were announced in January, with the pair removed from the state Central Military Commission in late August.

Since coming to power in 2012, Xi has unleashed one of the most sweeping corruption and discipline crackdowns in modern Chinese history. Millions within China's vast bureaucracy have been investigated to varying degrees, with scores of senior party, government and military officials ensnared and purged.

The military has increasingly been one of the main targets of this broader campaign in recent years. A string of investigations and expulsions have left just two active figures on the formerly seven-member CMC, including Xi himself, who serves as chair.

UK/KSA/YEMEN/MIL/FILLING A US-SIZED HOLE - UK to help refuel Saudi jets countering Houthi attacks
https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/cqlykpe4dk0yo

Britain is set to deploy a military aircraft to help refuel Saudi Arabian fighter jets in the country's conflict with the Iran-backed Houthis in Yemen.

The RAF Voyager plane, operating from a UK base in Cyprus, will begin "air-to-air refuelling" operations in the coming days after the UK agreed to a request from Saudi Arabia, Defence Minister Luke Pollard said.

He added the support was for "purely defensive" Saudi missions and would be time-limited for a "matter of weeks, rather than days".

The Houthis are locked in a civil war with Yemen's internationally recognised government, which is backed by Saudi Arabia.

In recent days, the Houthis in Yemen say they have carried out drone and ballistic missile attacks on the Saudi capital Riyadh, as well as energy sites on the country's Red Sea coast.

US/AUSTRALIA/CHINA/MIL/TECH/HELL OF A MIX UP - F-35 Parts Diversion to Hong Kong Under Probe in US Congress
https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2026-09-21/f-35-parts-diversion-to-hong-kong-under-probe-in-us-congress

A US House committee that oversees defense policy is investigating the diversion of potentially sensitive F-35 fighter jet components this year from Australia to Hong Kong, a spokesperson said.

“The committee is aware of this issue and we’ve received multiple briefings on it,” said House Armed Services Committee spokesperson Heather Vaughan, adding the group is “continuing to look into the incident and conduct oversight.”

The Pentagon’s F-35 program office said in a statement that “we are aware of a shipment issue of unserviceable F-35 components and we are actively working with US authorities and industry partners to retrieve these components, investigate the incident, and place safeguards to avoid a future occurrence.”

Politico reported on Friday that a shipment of F-35 parts bound for the US for repairs was rerouted from Australia and ended up in Hong Kong, sparking concerns over reverse engineering of classified components of the fighter jet.

The program office declined to disclose the components or explain the term “unserviceable,” including whether the items were damaged beyond repair. Program officials are scheduled to brief committee staff as early as Tuesday, a US official said.

When asked to comment on the report, a spokesperson for Australia’s Department of Defence said Canberra “takes the protection of classified and export-controlled technologies extremely seriously.”

ALBANIA/POL - Albania court suspends spy chief, orders house arrest in graft probe
https://www.reuters.com/world/albania-court-suspends-spy-chief-orders-house-arrest-graft-probe-2026-09-22/

An Albanian court has suspended the country's spy chief and has ordered her placed under house arrest on suspicion of disclosing classified information, as part of a wider corruption investigation, a special prosecution ‌office said on Tuesday.

Vlora Hyseni, who is originally from Kosovo, has served as head of the Sherbimi Informativ i Shtetit (SHISH) intelligence service since 2023. Previously, she served as deputy intelligence chief in Kosovo.

Prosecutors said Hyseni was suspected of disclosing classified information to unauthorised persons in connection with a corruption case at the National Agency for Information Society (AKSHI), which manages Albania's digital public services and IT infrastructure. The special prosecution office, known as SPAK, has long been pursuing the case.

Hyseni could not be reached for comment.

Many state officials and business people have been arrested or are being investigated for misusing public money at AKSHI.

SPAK, which targets corruption and organized crime, said the measures against Hyseni were approved by an anti-corruption court to allow further investigation.

LITHUANIA/RUSSIA/POWER - Lithuania plans key substation near Russia, fortified against explosive drones
https://www.reuters.com/world/europe/lithuania-plans-key-substation-near-russia-fortified-against-explosive-drones-2026-09-22/

Lithuania is planning defences against military drones at a key future power grid substation linking the Baltic states with western Europe in an area that intelligence sources say Russia could target with a false flag attack.

The construction plans include fencing strong enough to resist an explosives-laden truck, ‌sensors searching for possible tunnels dug by hostile actors, and concrete "sarcophagi" for transformers to withstand any drone attack, Litgrid CEO Andrius Semeskevicius told Reuters.

"Previously, when designing our grid, we planned for natural disasters. Now, we think about all possible hybrid and non-hybrid threats", he said in an interview.

The Gizai substation, to be built some 30 km (19 miles) west of the Russian exclave of Kaliningrad, will be the first new installation in the region since Russia launched its full-blown invasion of Ukraine in 2022. It will be part of a key grid section being built to ensure steady power supply to the Baltic states in case of a wider conflict.

Its route through a section of Poland and Lithuania squeezed between Russia and its ally Belarus -- the so-called Suwalki Gap -- has long caused security concerns within the NATO military alliance, of which Warsaw and Vilnius are both members.

DPRK/MIL/TECH - North Korea touts new weapons system described as hypersonic
https://apnews.com/article/north-korea-missile-kim-hypersonic-27b540de28525e4bf23c89b90991393d

North Korea said Tuesday its latest missile tests involved a new weapons system of “great significance,” with photos indicating it launched a missile previously described as hypersonic.

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un said the weapon’s development would strengthen the country’s war readiness and give its enemies an “incurable headache,” the North’s official Korean Central News Agency said. He did not describe what the weapon was.

Kim observed Sunday’s tests with his teenage daughter, widely seen as a potential successor.

South Korea’s military detected North Korea firing two short-range missiles three hours apart from the eastern coastal Wonsan area Sunday. South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff said the missiles flew about 450 and 600 kilometers (280 miles and 370 miles) toward the sea, while Japan’s military said they landed in waters outside the country’s exclusive economic zone.

JAPAN/STORM - Torrential rains brought by Japan typhoon kill four, NHK says
https://www.reuters.com/business/environment/torrential-rains-brought-by-japan-typhoon-kill-two-nhk-says-2026-09-22/

Torrential rains brought by a powerful typhoon lashing Japan's Pacific coast caused landslides that killed four people with six missing, public ‌broadcaster NHK said on Tuesday, while snapping electricity supply to about 45,000 homes.

Typhoon Dujuan is the latest extreme weather event in a year of unusually intense rain, floods and tropical cyclones that have hit regions across the globe, from East Asia to North America and Europe.

Mud flowing into a home killed a woman in her 60s in the city of Yokosuka in the Kanto region, after landslides in the areas of Kanagawa and Chiba, the broadcaster said, adding that three other dead ranged in age from the 50s to the 80s.

Rescuers cleared away debris in the city of Miura, also in Kanagawa south of the capital Tokyo, as they searched for a missing person at a house hit ‌by a landslide.

ARGENTINA/US/TRADE - Milei’s US Trade Deal Is Under Threat as Argentina Demands Better Terms
https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2026-09-22/argentina-us-trade-deal-at-risk-javier-milei-government-seeks-better-terms

President Javier Milei’s advisers in Argentina have told the Trump administration they don’t have the votes in the nation’s congress to ratify the bilateral trade agreement they signed last February, according to people familiar with the matter.

Milei’s government wants to renegotiate the terms because of the US Supreme Court’s ruling on President Donald Trump’s global tariffs, according to the people, who asked not to be named discussing private talks.

Although Trump has called Milei “my favorite president,” his policymakers flew to Buenos Aires in recent weeks to deliver a clear message: Renegotiation is off the table, as it would set a precedent for other countries to seek sweeter conditions. They’re urging Argentina to ratify the deal, and they don’t see a coherent legislative strategy or timeline by Milei’s government, people familiar with the situation said.

SRI LANKA/POL/SEC - Sri Lanka court convicts 15 over deadly Easter Sunday bombings
https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2026/9/22/sri-lanka-court-convicts-14-over-deadly-easter-bombings

Sri Lanka’s High Court has convicted 15 of the 24 men accused of being involved in the 2019 Easter Sunday bombings, which killed 279 people, including 45 foreigners, and injured more than 500.

After a five-year trial, the three-judge bench on Tuesday found that 14 of the accused were guilty on all charges, which included murder, conspiracy to commit “terrorism” and possessing firearms and explosives under the Prevention of Terrorism Act.

A 15th defendant was found guilty of only some of the charges, while nine others were acquitted.

All of the accused are from Sri Lanka’s minority Muslim community. Twenty-five men were originally charged, but one defendant died in custody.

Among those convicted on all charges was Mohamed Naufar, whom prosecutors identified as the ringleader who provided support to the eight-member squad that carried out the bombings.

The presiding judge told a packed courtroom that sentencing would take place later on Tuesday. Dozens of police commandos provided security outside as the verdicts were read.

Sri Lanka’s Roman Catholic Church welcomed the convictions. “Finally, we have justice,” Catholic priest Jude Fernando told the AFP news agency. “It has taken a long time to get to this point.”
