It's terrible that the most disadvantaged and vulnerable in society can be taken advantage of so egregiously through the very legal system that should be protecting them. Although there was at least some justice in the end, it's sad that Bill has been and continues to be neglected by the social systems/structures, which even now don't support him and leave him to fend for himself, outside brief flashes of media (traditional or influencer) exposure. Hopefully, this kind of DNA testing is ordered much sooner and more proactively in legal identity disputes going forward, as it's very much apparent how other identification can be fooled by seemingly sophisticated perpetrators if the victim cannot adequately defend themselves due to socioeconomic and mental health issues.
He was badly let down by his state appointed lawyer who only had to make a few cursory inquiries to establish his claim was credible. They had a year to do it. Instead they did nothing and pressured him into a convenient lazy guilty plea and release for time served.

Great episode. Am conflicted on aspects of this though. I have sympathy for some people who adopt a new identity to escape the mistakes of their past when they live in a society that won’t allow meaningful rehabilitation. Wisconsin Bill doesn’t qualify here as he continued to commit crimes and caused harm to the oerson who’s identity he stole.
Listened en route from Tulsa to Phoenix and was not disappointed. Thanks, ACC, and am thankful for what you do.
Gotta love how the criminal’s dismissive attitude forwards the very dude who brought him down is absolutely drenched in karma. Doesn’t pay to be a douchebag, especially when you’re doing the dirt to others.
