I can't stand the Libertarian philosophy. I wish every one of them would loose everything and then get sick. They woukd have no money to get Healthcare. Then ask them to get a job before they can get medical care. I think this is what they actually deserve this.
“Refugee program. Gross.” 🤣
The Swindles over money with no body count are always my favorites.
its the white crime im here for!
Thrres a good documentary on one of the streaming services that tells the story of the Acapulco anarchists. Don't feel sorry for most of the people in this episode, except for Lily/Wendy who finally woke up. Fascinating (but also infuriating) story. Great job, ACC!
I just started rewatching that series yesterday, and out of curiosity, I looked up the Anarchapulco festival. It's still ongoing and Lily is a headliner on the main page for the October session. Crazy.
It's all about our loved ones, people. Take care of them or have some family values CHOKED INTO YOU! LOL
Anyone named Lazarus should be a red flag on bad news
First time I don't feel sorry for the "victims".
If only the scams would stick to just eating their own
So Libertarians threw a Fyre Festival in the Andes, based on a book no one’s actually read, for people who don’t want to pay taxes…this episode has everything 🐷❤️
It felt like a permeant Fyre Festival situation to me too!
Regarding your last line, in the words of the late, great Janis Joplin, “Freedom’s just another word for nothing left to lose.”
Anyone who understands anything about human nature knows there never has been, never will be, and never CAN BE such a thing as a utopian society — not as long as humans are involved!
Had a coworker who was ALL ABOUT that anarchapulco event and would relentlessly brag about going. Delighted to learn he was even more full of shit than I realized back in the day.
Libertarian utopias would work out just fine if libertarians didn't insist on being part of them. You know how when someone doesn't have an accurate or healthy way of viewing their appearance, we call it "body dysmorphia" ... Libertarians have "socio-political dysmorphia." They end up reaching conclusions like "laws are evil" or "money is god" or "poor people are selfish"... 🙄
That being said, I differentiate between capital L and little l L(l)ibertarians because the capital L are just meant to spoil the vote to get Republicans elected and shift the whole debate to the right... I hold a couple little L policy positions - I'm pro decriminalizing and legalizing drugs and I'm pro consensual adult sex work.... But I diverge from libertarians on gun control. I'm for it - they ain't.
An episode featuring two of the things I despise the most: Libertarians and Ayn Rand.🤮
Yeah, I don't quite feel as bad for these victims as all the others ACC has ever covered...
There is a sad irony in how these attempts at libertarian societies end up illustrating the problems that come with a society built on individualised contracts with minimal to no centralised authority to hold people accountable or deter and prevent collapse into 'might makes right' rule of violence, upending any pretence of freedom, which would otherwise be spent getting screwed over and cheated by contract shenanigans of your fellow 'objective' individualists. I just wish they didn't leave a trail of broken lives, bodies, dreams and people swindled, hurt, even killed, along their way to inevitable ruin.
Excellent episode. I wish it wasn't so prescient, but here we are. No one has figured out that it's *humans* that are why these idealistic societies don't work out. And yet as you pointed out at the end, people are still victimized by "radical" thoughts. Great music as well! Thanks for going down this rabbit hole ACC and love your puns as usual; hope you have a great pallet cleanser (for your own sake).
Thanks, ACC. Personally never understood libertarians; they seem like conservatives but even less mature.
I was living in Acapulco during this whole shit storm. And no, I had nothing to do with the dumb libertarian anarchist “community” but the true story is even more fucked up than this….
I'm curious, what did the episode miss?
Thank you Dave!!!! You saved my drive home from work 🧡🧡🧡
Dave?!
Incredible show as always. Was wondering when my hometown would be mentioned on an episode. Always assumed Berwick was from Vancouver but nope… Edmonton baby 🤘🏼 😵
This is me before the ep: omg NEW DROPPPPPPP stay tuned for probably horrified reaction after After the drop: BROTHER WHAT?!?!? Long dog silver took me outttttt why is ACC so funny. Also Clarence Thomas is literally just Uncle Ruckus you can't tell me otherwise man.
I've lived here for 40+ years, I was wondering when you'd hit up these clucks.
Tulsa Ok, that is
Hahahaha the Principality of New Utopia made me honk. Libertarians: they just dont get it
Libertarians. The most regarded people.
It's one of those 'oh wow there's no good people in this' episodes that leaves me wondering about the audacity of some people. I don't know how many episodes that feature a swindler with certain musical talents (?) this makes now, but I can see a Now That's What I Call Swindled compilation album for listeners with the strongest ears, featuring the 'greatest' hits from the likes of Jered Threatin, Rhazzlekhan, Anthony Koletti, and now Jeff Berwick
I could get behind these cursed jams. What say you ACC?
Definitely the greatest passage in the history of podcast literature re Clarence Thomas and The Fountainhead/Atlas Shrugged: “novels that he holds in nearly the same esteem as the collected works from his other favorite artist, Long Dong Silver.”
This is insane, was this widely covered at the time? I would have thought I would have heard about Maureen or Howard, what insane humans! Thank you so much for this story, ACC!!!!
Yes! No matter what is going on in the country and my life, whenever a new Swindled ep comes out, I get that little stoked jumpy feeling in my chest that means my next hour+ is going to be filled with no worries or concerns - just pure enjoyment. Thanks, ACC.
OMG how did you know how much I needed this tonight?
Some of this may have inspired Bioshock's Rapture.
Was gonna say Andrew Ryan wouldn’t stand for this 🤣. [time to go play again].
Perfect timing as always. Just when I was already listening to another episode
