The manga is great if you want to read it after season 2

These next episodes are my favorite of the season, I'm so excited.

Small thing but I love how Askeladd calls Thorfinn and Canute "kids", like they're his own - because effectively he "made" them both, as they stand today. Notably in large part by killing their father figures. I love all the different angles on fathers (living and dead) that come together in this episode. Thorfinn and Thors, Thorfinn and Askeladd, Canute and Sweyn, Askeladd and Olaf...

A piece of advice: don’t follow the comments regarding the next two episodes. It’s better not to be prepared for the endings; the less prepared you are, the more you’ll enjoy them, especially when it comes to season finales

Totally agree with this - comments will become like "vibe" spoilers, rather than narrative spoilers

I believe the references made by Askeladd's mother to a "land far west from here" is not necessarily referencing Vinland, as it had not been discovered yet at that time. I think more so it's similar description is meant to connect the two "safe havens" we've heard of in the show so far. Even though Vinland actually exists, it's still not fully realized as an actual destination within Thorfinn's mind. It's more of a symbol of a perfect world that "haunts" our characters, and connects them. No matter how different these people are, they still dream the same dream. You could also argue that this is what the Vikings who are chasing Valhalla are after. Valhalla is described as a beautiful hall in Asgard, that serves as a paradise for those who die in battle.. It sure sounds like another kind of "Vinland" to me.

yea the west that the mother refers to is england or wales most likely since they are in Denmark I believe but def both thorfinn and askedladd haunted by a land far west from here as a nice parallel.

I feel like Askeladd resents Thorfinn somewhat. Thorfinn grew up with everything Askeladd ever wanted, such as a father figure like Thors and is still throwing his life away for something as worthless as revenge, and turned out to be an ugly viking anyway. 10 years and he still can't even manage to take his head, it's frustrating. But also, Askeladd is partially responsible for how Thorfinn ended up so stunted, and he knows that. Despite all of this though Thorfinn is still more honourable than he is. Even though at this point he's spent more time with Askeladd than his own father, he will still only kill him in a duel and not in his sleep or some other underhanded method like Askeladd would've gone about it. Perhaps that's also annoying to Askeladd

There's definitely something here that Askeladd is trying to say about honour, in the Thors of it all he understands there's no honourable way to kill someone you hate. It's kind of like the thing with Ragnar's love, Thorfinn might be seeking the duel out of love for his father, trying to honour him, but what about all the dishonour he is leading in his stead? Most of Thorfinn's battles are people he vastly outmatches, and he only ever fights worthy opponents when he is pressured to in bigger plans that he is barely aware of. So maybe Askeladd feels like he is still worse than Thorfinn, but he also has some disdain for how Thorfinn has bent his fathers logic to fit his own narrative of honour.
