Yes! Thorkell did defect from the King of Denmark's service to fight for the English. I'm from Kent and there's a lot of history about his campaign in Canterbury leading up to it. He made a right old mess down here!

at 11:52 could it be that you are mixing up vinland and valhalla??

I've heard actually the tone of action in this show is influenced by the real viking sagas and the ridiculous feats they would claim, beating bears in combat or felling trees by hand. There was common behaviour for men with big status to lie about, or be lied about by others, in terms of their achievements and how intense they were in battle. It's that juxtaposition between the fact of their actions and the energy to which they engage with it. It's about leaving a legend behind, and these achievements are how the men of this time see to sway their favour.

From a literature perspective, we can also think of Sagas as very similar to Epic poetry: storytelling highly rooted in oral tradition, and therefore a lot more malleable and prone to being further embellished over time. If I remember rightly, there's a good few hundred years between the period described in the real Vinland Sagas and when they were composed in writing, so there's been a lot of time for the story to stretch as well. It would be like us writing down a story we'd been told about, say, Napoleon, or the Luddites or something.

The reason for the lack of season 3 is a logistics issue. There was an interview done with someone who worked on Vinland Saga. She said that the majority of the team are working on different anime projects, some of which already have multiple seasons greenlit. So unless they decide to change who works on Vinland Saga and get rid of the original animation team, its basically a waiting game for when they're all free again. Although these days in anime, it's become common to wait 2 years for only 10-12 episodes. Up to 5 years for 24 episodes doesn't seem long anymore for those of us who got used to this 😭😭😭😭😭

Great questions. The show handles exactly what you're wondering about beautifully IMO. A lot of its strengths lie in what you're mentioning and questioning, for me. And yeah, Askeladd is probably one of my favourite characters of all time. FYI: Yes, Thorkell apparently did defect to join the English. But not exactly under the circumstances as presented. FYI: The studio (MAPPA) has some of the most demanding shows to animate on its roster, pretty much all the time. I believe that's why season 3 is taking so long. Even the mangaka is waiting lol.

Askeladd in this episode shows how attracted he is to the romantic. This episode he talks about the nature of the world and how it goes on in cycles, and how he believes the final cycle is upon him. He frames the need to capture Canute to his men as a financial gain, but it’s clear the glory of influencing the danish empire is what’s truly drawn him to this new challenge. It’s a damn crazy idea but he really believes he can have a go

Yep, Thorkell and his "loyalists" defected and entered into the service of King Æthelred of England, for whom he fought against the invasion of the Danish King.

In real life it was mostly financial gain unlike in the show where he just wants a good fight, but the fact that he defects is true
