I always feel like Askeladd's pleased reaction to Thorfinn carrying on with them, plus his nonchalant abandonment of him when he was losing to Thorkell, is exactly what the relationship is at this point in the story. It illustrated the complications and simplicity perfectly. Some people really do just relate to others that way. I wonder if, as you said with the Kill Bill Vol I reference, he really does believe Thorfinn has the right to keep trying take him down, to grow into someone who could, even if he would rather not go.

its funny you brought up the animation, the guy who was the key animator for thorfinn vs thorkell is the one responsible for levi's most iconic fight scenes . maybe his dynamic style felt a little familiar

I would hold off on researching anyone until after you finish Season 1, at the very least — I'd say history offers some pretty big spoilers about multiple characters! (Also I've been waiting for Thorkell to return to the story, he's so fun!)
