Death Note - Episode 10

There's also something that gets lost in translation, even when watching the Japanese version with subtitles. The way Japanese is spoken, things are left to be inferred. I think this video explains it pretty well. https://www.reddit.com/r/deathnote/comments/1l3cmc7/the_photo_test_explained_it_was_butchered_in_the/
No spoilers past where you're at in the video. Won't vouch for the comments, so don't read those
When it comes to L talking about how much he suspects light and percentages and stuff I’d take it with a grain of salt because L’s unreliable at times and can suspect light far more than his dialogue/monologues may suggest. Not saying that’s true this episode but something to keep in mind.
Jamaal it seems like you want them to show and not tell but then get confused every time they do so😭 maybe you prefer that?
I would say, Light vision about Justice is in my opinion a critique of the japonese legal and criminal system and its famous short comings and prejudice
watching these eps have genuinely become part of my daily routine lol, ty for giving me something more to get excited about
Personally, the chess game Light and L are playing was much easier for me to follow when watching in dub.
Bro upload more if you can how can you wait 2 days to watch an episode
he has a life????
You were correct that scene with william dafoe is in american psycho
Like you said, inner monologues are a thing in anime but in Death Note's case they really are quite essential. There are some clips online where they removed the inner monologues and its so funny to watch because they're just staring at each other awkwardly lmao. The inner monologues themselves drive the story in Death Note.
I feel like the length of a lot of the inner monologues, doesn’t actually translate to the same amount of time in the real world. It wouldn't really make much sense otherwise. If you've ever seen the show 'You' they do a similar thing there too. Orr a lot of the inner monologue is happening simultaneously to the dialogue that happens directly after.
I think Light's boxed-in sense of justice probably comes somewhat from his dad being in the police? He's been brought up with the idea of justice being woven in with the law and law enforcement. But also I guess it gives substance to your previous points about him still being a petulant child underneath it all. Not being able to read into a wider sociological sense of justice is really quite naive, isn't it? He's plenty intelligent, but lacks wisdom.
There is also the Japanese justice system in the first place, which has a very high majority guilty conviction rate. In japan, if you're sentenced for a crime you're almost certain to be jailed for it, and so this can loop into Lights thinking and how certain he is that he's doing good, Japans legal system is propped up the same way where because they have the power to, they feel free and proud in convincting anyone
