Arjac Rockfist - Desaturated Red Shoulder Pad

Red can be so deceptive!

If you push the highlights too far, and it turns pink.
Add too much orange, and it stops reading as red entirely.

In this lesson, I break down how I approach a desaturated, slightly rusty red using simple color theory.

You’ll see:

• Why I shade red with transparent purple
• How I build brightness by moving toward orange and yellow rather than white
• How to use glazes (burnt sienna and purple) to re-integrate color and integrate the textured brush stroke
• How to keep highlights tight on small-scale volumes

At the end of the lesson, I show how I slightly over-highlight and then glaze back to unify everything - a method I often use in my patining.

The paints used in this video are from Monument hobbies - their basic pro acryl paints, the transparents and burnt sienna from their heavy body expert artist acrylics. If you're interested in picking them up you can support me and get 5% your order at checkout when using codes WATCHPAINTDRY (for the US store) and MALTEDUEHOLM (for EU store)

The keen observer will notice I'm using the triangle brushes from Abyssoul and I'm really enjoying these brushes as well. They're softer than what I'm used to but work really well!

As always, thank you for making these lessons possible.
Your support allows me to spend this much time on details like this.

Happy painting.
