Flag Stop! A Locomotive That Replaced Mules, Then Died, Then was Resurrected By Yet More Mules.
Hello everyone, we hope y'all in the states had a wonderful thanksgiving holiday! Work is nearly finished on the Industries Part 1 vlog; the systems are there and we're in the process of stress testing them to ensure they're working properly, and commodity meshes are currently being mapped and exported for loading, so that will be out shortly. In the meantime, our rolling stock team has a very unique and unusual piece of motive power with an even more unusual service life to debut today: Asset leader Daniel has created the Austin City Railway's "Mules' Relief," a Baldwin 6-16 1/3 C Steam Motor, often known as steam dummies colloquially. These engines fill an often overlooked gap in the history of narrow gauge railroading, not just on various street railways and metropolitan lines, but also [checks notes] on logging lines and mining roads in the middle of the Nevada desert?!
Enjoy!

I wasn't expecting to see the -actual- Mule's Relief be put in the game, but I am not complaining at all! It's such a neat and obscure little locomotive. I'm also thrilled to see some small locos get a little bit of spotlight. I also hope to see more when it comes to small locomotives for the game!
Wilhelm scream moment
Idc when if ever the game comes out. These little updates are so interesting. Ive already got my money's worth twice over!
The background music is sooo good. I assume you've got a few new tracks in the mix.
That image of a "Wrights Double Acting Plunger Pump" reminds me of the "similar*" boiler feed pumps fitted to early Beyer Peacock locos such as the Royal Swedish Railways, "Prins August" - which still exists, with a water feed pump. * Similar, as in from low quality images they both appear to be a vertical steam cylinder driving a flywheel and pump through a Scotch Yoke. I don't want to send you down a fruitless rabbit hole, as an entirely different builders practice, that is probably unconnected to this loco, is very unlikely to give the information to model that style of pump, and associated fittings, in detail. One possible connection (though tenuous and entirely my conjecture) is that Beyer Peacock did supply locos to Australia, so the Australian order to BLW for the previous loco which Mules' Relief was based on might have included that style of pump as part of the Australian spec. because it was what they were used to. However, since it was stated as being a requirement of the Nevada Central there is unlikely to be a link, unless it was that the Nevada Central required a independent steam driven water feed pump, so BLW used a similar style to one that had been used on the design Mules' Relief was based on, but still entirely conjecture especially as I don't know if the Australian order had that style of pump. Great work on the model. On a personal note I'm delighted to see a small 0-4-2 with a decent amount of punch modelled, as to me the 0-4-2 is a quintessential narrow gauge type in the UK, and this model, particularly the rebuilds, gives something of that flavour and character whilst still being authentic to the US, as well as covering a few other bases for you, such as Dummies.
Love it! I've been waiting to see what smaller, early stuff will be included. Will definitely be running it with all the side skirts and cabin on. Thanks guys! Keep up the great work!
Love seeing more locomotive being worked on. Can’t wait to see what’s next.
Very cool post, got me thinking about some local history and sadly there is almost nothing about it on the Internet. Up here in Washington State the old 'triangle of fire' forts that guard the entrance to Puget Sound are large concrete gun batteries that were built in the WWI era. The major guns and mortars were of the 10 and 12 inch flavor, you can imagine how much concrete that took. Naturally a construction railroad was used to build the forts, and being light and cheap it was 36" narrow gage. One of the Locomotives used to construct Fort Worden was an 0-4-2T porter, that was apparently previously owned by the Port Townsend Construction and Railway Company. It was supposedly built in 1889 and carried a tram body when new? Regardless, it was used up in the construction of the fort and apparently only worth about $30 as scrap at the time. What do you do with a locomotive that isn't worth scrapping? Bury it of course! It was found buried in sand and recovered in the 1970's. It is now stored at the fort and is somewhat viewable if you know where to look and there is some talk of a cosmetic restoration.
Hi, I wanted to know if it's possible to add Portuguese (Brazil) subtitles?
You can tell Wings had a lot of fun with the Rico gifs that should totally be emojis on the COS Discord
Exactly what i said when i saw em
The new sound track songs in the video are awesome. Can’t wait for the second part to drop.
Love seeing the wierd random little doots u guys find for this. It helps to preserve their memory and keeps things interesting at the same time.
Question: do the brooms work?
I have grown to love engines like these. Can't wait to run it around. Question what kind of whistle was the rebuild engine provided with?
I would suspect an 1870's or 1880's model Baldwin Plain Bell. Those were dime a dozen when Mule's Relief Kenosha'd
Who crashed the porter into a trolley.
I was drunk, mb
Great stuff, guys!
I was wondering if we were going to see industrial or contractor engines of any capacity. Love it. Clearly it’s cursed, but I love it.
Will there be 7.5% grade in the game to test this? Lol.
...and brake failures too? For reenactment purposes, of course.
I too shall be launching this down a cliff, I’m sure
I’d love to see my girl 152 get into game (Baldwin 10-22D) the same class was ordered for the by the Tuscarora valley railroad, just a stones throw from the EBT, and used in Alaska with Tanana valley railroad, that eventually made its way to the white pass
So, what I'm hearing is that President Mark needs to come over and visit the Standard Gauge NSW Government TRAMWAYS (No hate on Daniel at all, the Railways and Tramways departments can be a little hard to tell apart at the time) survivor of these Baldwin dummy motors at Valley Heights? This can be arranged. 😉 (Also, if we don't get 'La Perouse' and 'Bondi' destinations on the headboard for the shitpost, I will forever question your commitment to the bit....)
A fascinating little doot. I look forward to adding one or two of these machines to my railroad. Question: You mentioned Street Railroads. Will there be any scope for these anywhere in CoS? Like, would Keystone include a part of your Pittsburgh or Boston equivalent for players to serve, even if it's just a couple of stations in a corner of the map?
2 questions 1: Will it be able to get modernized to specific parts such as brakes, couplers, maybe an independent change? 2nd question, more so on Game Mechanics so feel free to come back to this later: I known railroads to use water tanks as 2nd tenders, will we be able to have a water tank connected to the engine or tender as a 2ndary, or will we only be able to transfer loaded water from the Tank to the Engine/tender?
OH my goodness gracious!! She's so friend shaped! You better believe that I'm going to 1) recreate that rollercoaster of a railroad, and 2) yeet the engine over the cliff once I get my hands on it! Amazing work, keep churning out doots!
What is that title? It sounds like a squeal to Hundreds and hundreds of beavers
Really like the new update system y’all got going. As someone who paced the NC mainline and seen the survivors at SCRM, it’s great that it’s getting attention since the E&P takes the spotlight the valley over.
Quick question is there plans for emergency situations in Century of steam? Such as wildlife running onto the tracks or vehicles cutting in front of us?
Great to see another locomotive! And a smaller guy too, hope to see more small engines in the future!
> is listening along in the background, enjoying hearing about it > Sudden mention that it's based on a similar design.... for the NSWGR?! You had my curiosity.... now you have my attention xD
