Testers needed (later)

UPDATE: Major flaw found (Thanks Alex and Anja). No need for further tests until this is resolved. Keeping this post for documentation.

After fighting long and hard just to get Genesis running again, I managed to provide new a a first preliminary 4.1.0 version. This version needs testing.

Genesis 4.1.0 will be the first version to run on Java 11 (and not Java 8 anymore), which will be mandatory somewhere in 2020. To achieve this the application was heavily remodeled under the hood and has potential bugs (crashes, not appearing screens), which originate from resource files moved to different locations, while the part of the application was not updated accordingly.
Of course I did my tests, which means I openend and printed characters of all four supported RPGs. But I did not test character creation yet.

Also, Genesis 4.1.0 is the first version that will require JARs build for each supported operating system. Since I am a Linux user, I did most of my tests on this OS.

So, I need volunteers, who will test Genesis 4.1.0 on their OS.

  • You will need to deinstall Java 8 and install Java 11 (or otherwise make sure, that you run Genesis 4.1.0 with Java 11)

  • You should be able to have a look at log output - either by starting the JAR from the shell or by finding the logs (in the logs subdirectory) and inspecting the.

  • You should be able to find stack traces in the log - multiline error message that list where in the code the error occurred. I expect MissingResourceExceptions or NullPointerExceptions.

  • Since it is a very early version, there is no gain in using the official bugtracker - just reply to this post, giving your OS, the kind of error you got und what you think was the error message in the logfile.

The version to test does not include product data (adventures and covers) yet, so it isn't a bug, if these data is missing.

I just got aware of another obstacle, I wasn't aware of. While you can run JARs normally on Linux, this does not work as it used to be on Windows (don't know for Mac) anymore. According to Oracle, Java 11 isn't intended to run JARs anymore. WTF! There still is a Java interpreter, but it isn't configured anymore to run JARs, when you select them - you need to do this manually, if you really need it. Instead developersmust ship their applications as an installable binary. So, this post of mine was pretty useless - most users won't be able to test this app.

I won't have time until maybe the end of the coming week (business trip Sunday to Wednesday) for real testing, but at least I could confirm that the version launches with Java 11 / MacOS 10.13.6. And I can print a Splittermond character with the result looking pretty similar, though the PDF is significantly smaller.) Java 8 tells me, that it won't work, since the JAR is complied for a "too new class file version (55.0 instead of 52.0)". So it's Java 11 only?

Yes, as I wrote in my post. 😉 At least it launches now. And the PDF is smaller, due to the missing product images I guess.
