Moving

Moving a project of this size to a new location is a lengthy process - and for someone doing it in his sparetime, it is similiar to moving into a new city: It takes a lot of time for preparation, the moving itself and creating a home in the new location. That is basically what I have done the last weeks.

Well, we moved. Figuratively speaking, we placed all our boxes in the right rooms and set up a bed. It is time for a house-warming party.

The new location to which your generous patron supports helped us (You rock!), is hosted by Atlassian on bitbucket.org and atlassian.net and by Microsoft on azure.com. Let me explain in more detail:

Bug-reports and feature requests

  • There is a new service desk for your support requests at https://rpgframework.atlassian.net/servicedesk/customer/portal/1
You are not required to create a login anymore - having a valid email address should be enough.

  • If you don't want to use the webfrontend, you can simply mail us:
    genesis_support at rpgframework.atlassian.net

Known erros and current work

We use the task management system JIRA, to track our known bugs and work items. On the new location we made this accessible (read-only) to the public.

https://rpgframework.atlassian.net/projects/GEN/issues

I haven't figured why you don't see all with anonymous access - the Kanban boards would give the best overview - but at least you can see them at all.

Source code

Most of our sources are available to the public (I will explain this in detail in a later post). You can find them in multiple Git repositories at https://bitbucket.org/rpgframework/

Each repository has a list of "Commits" - for non-developers: changes made to the code - so you can track what we are doing.

Developer Wiki

To help contributors to settle into the project, we will fill our Wiki over the time. It also serves as a knowledge base when you file a bug report (see above).

https://rpgframework.atlassian.net/wiki/

At the moment, it is pretty empty or has default pages. I really hope I will find the time to add more content.

Current state

You will notice, that except the source code in the repositories there isn't much content yet. I decided not to migrate all data from the old JIRA to the new, but to manually check all remaining bug reports (100+) and feature requests and decide what to do with them. Some of them may not be important anymore, others will be obsolete when I finished rewriting the Splittermond generation code, while others will still be valid.

So, figuratively speaking - I will sort out what to keep and what to get rid of, like you do when you move. (Okay, usually you do that BEFORE you move ;-) ) I still need to paint the walls, unpack the moving boxes, paint some walls and eventually buy some furniture, but the main work is done.

I mentioned it before, but cannot say it enough: This was possible thanks to you Patreons. You provide us with a steady amound of money to help pay server/service rent, which enables us to work with contributors in the first place.

Usually the Blog posts on Our official site contain release notes. I could collect them in Confluence - actually, I like the idea. It would also be a good place for a roadmap or at least a planned feature list. (Jira is offering a roadmap feature, but does Not allow to make it publically available.)

Any chance you could use the Confluence "blog" feature for release notes, etc. pp. towards users? Or do you want to keep this "private" and have a different publishing platform? (Where people don't get confused with the "development stuff" around?)
