How is everyone's day today? Let me tell you, my day was a little different. On the way home, someone t-boned me, my car flew off the road. The car is pretty fucked. I was able to limp it home but the whole side of it got torn off and the interior is exposed. The trunk smashed, my gas tank is fucked, the side door is caved in and my tail light was torn clean off. On top of that, my bumpers also missing so it just looks like a skeleton now. I got fucked up pretty good. I guess I'm fine, the car just isn't. I got out of the car and I walked toward the person. They were on their hands and knees on the ground crying and screaming. They thought they killed me because the car did look pretty fucked. They also made my car spin off the road and into a ditch.

As they laid there with their hands on the ground and their head in the dirt crying, I could tell that they were probably not in a great place. I walked up to them and I noticed that a large chunk of my car was in their bumper. Oh yeah, it was a large vehicle, it was a FedEx truck. They have a huge bumper that had a big portion of my tail light lodged into it and a chunk of the car steel wrapped around it. So I walked up and grabbed it, with a couple of firm tugs I was able to pull it out and said "now, you don't actually get to keep this part, this is still mine." I thought it was a pretty good one-liner for someone that just got in a car accident. Unfortunately, He didn't understand what I meant cuz he didn't speak English. I later found out he was a Ukrainian refugee who had been living in this country for a year and he had to leave his family behind. He was only 20 years old and looked pretty distraught. It's understandable, living in a country where everyone is trying to deport everyone who sounds a little different. We used a translator and we talked. He talked about his dreams, how much he misses his family, how much money has to save to get his brothers and sisters over here. He spoke Russian, Ukrainian and polish which is crazy to me. I barely speak English. By the end, I had him laughing and not crying which made me happy. We went into my car and pulled some of the tools out and started smashing the metal bits back into my car so it didn't slice open the wheel and keep spare bits from dragging across the pavement. We bent the metal as far up into the vehicle as we could so it was less dangerous. I gave him a hug and I told him that we have lots of opportunities to be good in our lives and most people never take a single one of them. Then I just left. I didn't get his information, I didn't worry about insurance, I just limped my car away. (Turns out that FedEx subs out some of its work to people. Though they work for FedEx, they don't get any of the benefits like insurance and all of that. It was just a few Ukrainian guys running all the excess packages around.) So needless to say, I think I did a pretty good job not taking things too seriously and not making people's lives worse. Also, how could I ever try to make my day and my fucked up car seem more important than a kid who had to run away from the world he knew and his loved ones so he can keep himself safe while a tyrannical country tore apart his entire world? It just didn't seem Right to add one more negative thing to his life. I didn't want it to lose his job so it just seemed smarter to just keep living my life.

Anyway, my lesson today is that a lot of the time it takes less work to be kind to each other than it does to be a shitbag.
