On this day March 22, in 1621, Dutchman statesman Hugo Grotius successfully escaped from prison. Holland was rife with religious tension and he was arrested for supposed heresy or something. Specifically, his wife had him smuggled out of Loevestein Castle in a large chest. He made it to Paris, where the two reunited. History remembers Grotius as “Father of International Law.”
