In 1901, author and orator Booker T Washington shared a meal at the White House with then-POTUS, Theodore Roosevelt. This remains significant as the first time President a Black guest* was invited as an equal; it marked a new phase in cultural and racial diplomacy.

*Frederick Douglass visited Lincoln at least twice during his presidency, but from what I understand they did not 1. dine, and 2. I believe that was met with WH resistance.
