Full - Time Aspirations
I have said after the final chapter of Game of Hearts that I wish to tackle this project full-time.
I was hopeful that I could achieve that goal this year.
Now I'm much, much less hopeful.
Frankly, for a side project, I am doing very well.
For full-time consideration, however, it's a different story.
THE WORK NEEDED
There is no sugarcoating it: every release is a genuine struggle.
My personal health took a huge hit this year. 2 massive releases( Game of Hearts' final episode and House of Hearts' first episode ) drained so much from my life and my work.
House of Hearts is a lot of work for a single person. This time, luckily, I've had help with proofreading and community management. Animations, rendering, scenes, the dialogues, scene design, and everything else were made by me.
It's a lot of work for a single guy.
FULL TIME
Going at this full-time will alleviate so many headaches I have currently. Sleep is a major concern right now, and I find it difficult to focus during most days. My eyesight had gotten worse, too, a by-product of the lack of sleep.
I want those problem gone, so that's why I pushed so hard for the first episode to ensure it has that quality truly worthy of support.
Now, at best, I have maybe 4 hours a day to work with(mostly 2 hours a day)—12 to 16 hours during weekends and holidays, and close to maybe 16-20 hours per day when I'm close to my deadline. I had to take time off from my full-time job, and my general lack of sleep has impacted everything about my life.
I don't take breaks during production(before a beta release). Not because I'm insane, no:
Because I can't afford to take breaks.
The thing I said about not sleeping well? That's the truth. I don't sleep well, or sometimes at all, especially during the late stages of a release for weeks, or in House of Hearts' case, 6 consecutive weeks of just staring at a screen after work and doing absolutely the bare minimum outside of that. Sleep becomes an afterthought.
It's dangerous to keep going at this pace.
Will a better rig help? Absolutely. But there's only so much that better rig/workflow can help; at some point, I simply needed more hours per day. There is no substituting that.
SO, HOUSE OF HEARTS, HOW DID IT DO?
Unfortunately, the growth obtained from the first episode does not inspire much confidence. If anything, it shows me that I'm probably close to the maximum potential of what this project can offer.
I grew a little from the last peak ( the final episode of Game of Hearts ). This is a hard number to calculate; Patreon's insight is dismal when it comes to accuracy. However, signs do point toward declining growth.
My audience is quite niche, and I believe most who enjoy my style of storytelling and characters have already played it. My style and general preferences simply clash with what most consider to be the norm. The clash was so severe that some even considered my work to look awful. It's not their fault; preferences exist, but in my case, it's more contentious than I ever expected.
So, there's a chance that no matter what I do, my situation will not change.
Again, for a side project, I'm doing well. This isn't a bad number. In fact, it's very good.
But I wanted to go full-time. The calculations are different. There needs to be a prospect in which I can live a decent life for this decision to be viable.
It doesn't need to make me rich. Just enough to be comfortable.
I'm not at that point yet... and I'm questioning if I ever will.
That being said:
STEAM RELEASE
The only hope I have is the Steam release later this year. It's doing a lot better in terms of wishlists, but I can't rely on numbers that aren't tangible. The adult scene is way, way too volatile at this moment—I'm sure you know what happened in the past month with all the noise—so it is simply unwise to count on something that doesn't exist yet. My game may be rejected, or it simply won't earn enough to matter, or some other random things that happen outside of my control that completely change the prospect of my future.
What I can count on is the number I have right now.
TO CUT THINGS SHORT
December this year, I will come to a point where I must answer a difficult question:
Can I drop my full-time job for this project with the amount of support I have?
The numbers will drop quite a bit after a release, so the answer is probably no.
I must remind you and everyone: I'm not a big developer with humongous resources. There is no team of animators, artists, and writers behind me. The best help I had was proofreading and Discord community management; they did a tremendous job, but that doesn't account for everything else that I have done.
This project is tough. It's draining. It's exhausting.
Maybe it's a curse that I love working on this project so damn much. Passion drove me quite far.
I'll do everything in my power to stick with a 6-month release schedule. I can't possibly go any faster. It's too much. Even now, it's still too much.
That being said, thank you again for your support. I know it takes patience to wait this long for an episode, but I hope it is worth your while.
I'll post a project update soon.

I Have replayed your Game many times and still do so, It is on my steam wish list, but as some suggest its break time. But not go away break time do a short game one Ep only type, Like Brie Take her out of the world of “Hearts” and use her in a fun for you build. Build a Novel that has a potential to expand but does not require it Check out developer called Clever Name Games that dev has several other stories going at once so to keep it fun and people supporting.
Take care of yourself your mental and physical health should always come first. If the game takes that place, it will eventually fail because the developer (you) will suffer from burnout and exhaustion. I really, really enjoyed Episode 1 and look forward to the future of this VN, but there won’t be a future if your health isn’t the priority. You’ve created a great VN and shown amazing talent, so please take care of yourself first. As long as the game stays alive, is being worked on, and there’s good communication, it doesn’t matter if I have to wait six months for a new update.
I agree with this... definitly your health should go first. How else we get enjoy this content from you in future ? Im having similar problems with sleeping and I can just imagine how hard it is for you... :/ hard decisions
First of all take care of yourself, as long as you are healthy the project will be alive and you'll have people supporting you. That said, if it's not you main income and you are doing enough money, you could always get someone to help you with the project, perhaps on the coding side
Hey bro, please don't make this project a burden for you, your health is a foremost asset you had so please keep it together. I like the story of yours, it's not just a corny p*rn game that exist but you made an absolute cinema from your writings. I wish you just listen to your heart and take a rest, i don't want you to die (please). But humans have their own will. Humans have their own limit. I just want to say that your game can be finished as soon you still breathing. We can wait, you can wait, Well that being said. Good luck for this project!
Your work is good, the story is good, the art is good, everything about the product is good. But to achieve success you have to engage you audience, your fans. How hard you work is important, however, how much people like you is even more important. I asked you a questions sometime back. Here on Patreon, and over at discord. Both times it was a DM. But you never answered. I went over to Steam, to look at your release there. That platform can really help you grow. Alas, you chose to use a middleman. And you are not engaging your potential fans there either. Mind you, when I say engage, you need to pick you platform wisely. For example I would not choose to do 100% of my engaging over at F95. If I may nag you a bit more; A good product is only 30% of the journey. The market has to know you have a product, and the market has to like you. You can just be yourself, but you must engage your fans. If you care, then they will care. If not, you will remain where you are. A talented story teller, frustrated because he cannot make his living telling stories. And for the record, HOH is phenomenal in my books. But will you profit from it? Or rather, do you really want to profit from it?
I gotta say I agree with comments here... But I also understand too well sleep problems. When they are certain point crossed it's not easy task correct. i need say your game is top tiers easily... But it's not bad idea ask tips from other fellow devs if possible... But what you're doing is awesome and I hope you find your way to do what you love!
Hey Spark, I agree with everyone here giving their opinion, first thing you need to do is to work less on the game and take care of your health, sleep is one of the most important thing that our body needs, if you don’t receive enough sleep your body will start to break down and you being sick doesn’t help anyone especially yourself, I know that you want to get your updates out faster but we can’t control everything and you’re a great communicator so if updates take a little longer I’m 100% positive that people will understand, sooooo many devs burnout and get seriously sick don’t be one of them, another member mentioned about cross promotion, I get many emails from other devs supporting and advocating games that are not theirs, try talking to other devs, can you take something to help you sleep? Please take care dev, it’s obvious from all the comments that people care about you❤️
As the other patrons have said, none of us want you to burn yourself out or sacrifice your health for this. I love the avn and think it’s top tier but seriously put your health first. You seem so passionate and love this project that none of us think you would abandon it or “milk” subscribers for more time. Take your time with the project especially if it helps your personal life and sleep deprivation. Your health comes first! It’s worth it to be a patron to your games so all the added benefits are not needed as someone else has stated. Do what you gotta do but please don’t overburden yourself!! We’ll still be here.
Thanks for the kind words. I'll do what I can to progress at a more reasonable pace with my workload. I just can't stand the idea of keeping everyone waiting too long. And to be clear, I love this project, and I love what I do. That has never changed since the start of the project. I'm anxious about the same stretch of constant crunch time repeating again in the next episode. It's twice now that I went through that, and the notion of a third time of that exact scenario is just... horrifying, to say the least. My workload this year has been through the roof. I need to do something about that. Full-time or not, I will do my best.
I appreciate your honesty. I echo another comment asking what we can do to help. Your game is the best - bar none - and I respect your desire to hold quality. I'm fine waiting a little longer for updates, as I know you won't sacrifice quality. I just upgraded my subscription level to help. Can you reduce your workload without sacrificing quality? For example, I noticed you increased your supporter obligations. Some may like that, but personally, I'd rather the focus be on the game - I don't need more wallpapers. Can you hire somebody to manage certain parts of the game, programming, or subscriber fulfillment? How do you increase visibility? Again, maybe there are ways to promote the game (even paid promotions). We, your community, want to help as well, just let us know what we can do (reviews on F95, Steam, etc.). Do you have signatures available? (I couldn't find any, and signatures are one way I find other games) This game is in its own tier, and you should be among the most subscribed creators...it just doesn't come overnight. But I have notice your number of paid subscribers has grown significantly since the beta release.
No AVN is worth having its dev sacrifice their health making it. Any person in their right mind would prefer for you to take longer to release while taking proper care of yourself rather than rushing it at your own expense. That said, wishing you the best of lucks in whichever path you end up taking :D
I really don't think your project is niche at all, otherwise it would be much more controversial/small on forums but instead it's fairly beloved and has a lot of eyes on it. I really think it's mostly a visibility issue to paying customers so going on platforms full of paying clients (steam, oppaiman...) is a great first step, you can also do mutual advertising with other creators. I'd just hate you lose your drive as your work is so high quality it's almost a cinematic-quality vn. Good luck on your journey.
Wow, I knew making a VN was difficult, but doing it solo must be even harder. Listen carefully, bro, take the break you need from the time you need to develop the episodes. Don't worry, it's worth the wait. Quality is better than quantity. And remember, Rome wasn't built in a day.
Absolutely love the both games, the quality is definitely way better than most games out there. Here is my personal take. Even if you go full time you will still be suffering the same issues. This is a typical project management issue. You are simply pushing the timeline too aggressively. My suggestion is to be realistic about how often you can update and what is to be included in each update. Because realistically a person (even young one) can only crunch for 3-6 months before the person will suffer major health and mental issues. I would rather receive less updates if it meant you having a better health.
Just my two cents - I don't believe that AVN Development can be a full time career decision. I'm very sorry for that. But your product is AMAZING. I don't care what anyone says, the visuals are STUNNING. I will admit, I'm not a huge fan of the storytelling. Not because it isn't good, but because the ultra naturalist dialogue is a bit exhausting to slog through. Yes, it lends authenticity but it makes scenes take a long time and the story to move slowly. My advice - Cut your work load by removing most choices in the game. Make a true visual novel rather than a "game" so you don't have to write and render so many variations. The story itself is good. Just let us experience the story YOU want us to and don't worry about us having so many choices. Just my opinion. Keep up the good work.
You're searching for a solution in which you can work at this pace without burning up. Doing it fulltime might be an option, but it'll also give you headaches: if it's your only income, things like members leaving or criticism will hit double as hard as it does now. Because you rely on the money. As long as you're doing it as a side-job, it's an extra. I think the extra stress from doing it fulltime (unless you're making a ton of money with it) is to be considered as well. Isn't it a solution to be happy doing it as a side job, and slow down the pace? Either keep your 6-month-release window, and release smaller episodes, or keep the content the same and increase the release window? I understand (well, I think) that the more releases, the more growth, but if you burn up, that's not worth it. Is a slower release, slower growth but better worklife balance not better in the long run?
I think 6 months is about the longest I can delay without it impacting this project negatively.
We wish you the best!
