Witch Class Playtest Survey

A meeting of the Coven of Elders is nigh … and meanwhile, our Coven of Designers is eager to receive your official feedback on the witch class! We promise that, unlike certain Elder Coven witches, we have Ame’s best interests at heart. In fact, we want to make her abilities (and Fox) even better—and that’s where you come in.

If you’ve played a witch, played in or run a game with a witch, or even just read through the PDF, we would love to hear from you in this survey! (If you already left a comment on Patreon, it would be super duper helpful if you could also put your feedback in the form, but we will read the comments regardless.)

The feedback form will be open for a month, through midnight Pacific Time on Sunday, March 10th. The most helpful feedback is simply telling us what you enjoyed or didn’t enjoy and why, not what you think the mechanics should be. Too many cooks in the cottage’s kitchen and all that.

Friends, spirits, wanderers between worlds—thank you. We can’t wait to hear your thoughts.

Does anyone know how they are able to adjust this class to the 2024 handbook?

The witch class is the single greatest addition to D&D to come out of this (outside of the pure artistic expression of this story). I will compose a more thoughtful response later.

GMing for a witch finally! Had our first session last night and have a small mechanics question about cackle: does it impose disadvantage on ALL saving throws, or just strength and dex like the ability checks? Thanks!

I have come to understand that witches might be long lived, but did not see the represented in the class? Perhaps I missed it, I was going to entice my player with the idea of being a high level witch coming with some elongated life or even immortality? Perhaps there is an 8th level spell token or some such I haven't thought of?

Currently diving into His Dark Materials, and that's absolutely a thing from those witches that I'd love to see for the class! For now, I'd probably just give a witch PC the Timeless Body feature from druid or monk to get that "ancient beyond mortal ken" vibe for them.

I’ve been playing testing for about two months now but it looks like the form is closed now that I’ve got enough of an opinion on it :( Regardless, I love my coven of the heart witch in our Avernus campaign

I want to learn more! What have your experiences been? I'm running the game with a PC witch, and value any insights!

I don’t play D&D, but this class has really influenced the way I think about the system and world I am playing in. Thanks for doing this!

Gearing up for a campaign in which I'll be playing a Coven of the Green Witch! I'm thinking they might be a Shifter. Really torn between Wildhunt and Swiftstride. I've also been musing about how to leverage something like the Token mechanic to make spell jars that can self-activate without overpowering the mechanic. So inspired by another podcast I love, Old Gods of Appalachia, in which spell jars were buried in a yard as wards.

Do folks play with tokens costing the spell slot to create? It looks like 4 extra lvl 1 spells per day, at lvl 1 to me? Lvl 13 is 5 counterspells in the team's hands? And restock up to 4/day off rests alone. Please lemme know, folks, if I'm being silly, it never says expend the spell slot unless you fail by 5 or more. Or, lemme know if folks think it shouldn't expend the spell slot? I'm just saying that 4 tokens a day is double the number of first level spells any caster ever gets (and it scales with total level), so this is an auto dip for literally any caster, possibly any character at all. It should take the spell slot, right? Even that is powerful?

Plz inform. Does making a token cost a spell slot?

I played a Witch of the Green, and a Witch of the Claw in a small separate series of high-level one-shots. These subclasses pack a punch!

ooooo a west marches with this is such a great idea! Congrats!

My favorite thing about running a (admittedly insane) 10-15 player "Oops All Witches!" West Marches-esque campaign is seeing all the ways that folks have been running each of the covens at each session.

I was already playing a goliath barbarian with the ritual caster feat and Rune Carver background, trying to get some shamanistic vibes going. DM let me multiclass into Coven of the Green and it has been so much fun (5 barb/5 witch).

alas the option to put down "created a high level Witch as a BBEG to oppose the party" wasn't available, but let me add here that a 17th level Coven of the Wicked is a formidable opponent.

Welll,, just bc my group is Busy doesn't mean I can't still make a character ... >:3c

Will y'all post the results to this patreon? Or a summary of it? Sounds like an interesting read.

A week ago I ran an "Oops All Witches!" one shot for three Dimension 20 fans, only one of whom was a WBN listener. One was coven of the green, one coven of the heart, and one coven of the claw multiclassed with fighter. It was a great time! They seemed to really enjoy the new abilities, hung out with their familiars and utilized them in a fun way, and one player had the biggest positive reaction at the table of the whole one shot when they pulled off their Brath Of Belladona. I put this in the form as well, but I'm curious if other players of games with witches found that coven of the green and heart witches did not use their retributive or wracking curses. It felt a little like it clashed with the personalities and desires of my players and I'm wondering if that's been found in other test games as well.

I have an oops all witches campaign, we went level 1-8 so far. Retributive curses are rarely used by the heart and claw at my table, but when they are?? Oh boy, stand back. They also tended to take a much more "help others cast their ret curses" approach. So a couple of them did some multiclassing shenaniganery to get silvery barbs and they really force the villains to bend to the will of their dice now if a ret curse is cast. It's cool to see that others are noticing the same trends.

Listing to the witch class reminded me of a mechanic from the Root RPG that doesn't seem to be reflected in the content: in that game Vagabonds have a "depletion track" that represents the various trinkets they have on their person. At any point, they can spend one depletion to pull any mundane item out of their bag for use in a scene. Once they are out of boxes on their depletion track, their bag is empty. An item like that would add a mechanical element to Ame's ability to pull any old thing out of her bag. It could be something like "witch's bag - This bag has 6 charges. Use a charge to produce any mundane item that could fit in the bag and add +2 to a roll that involves that item. Charges recharge when the witch returns to her home."
