I find the idea of gloves that only let you play 10 out of the 13 notes in the chromatic scale upsetting. Also, hearing the word "Tamagachi" come out of Aabria's mouth made me feel seen in a way that was wholly unexpected.

Hey Brennan, my man, I get it. Growing up flat broke, but with responsible parents, means you don't get showered in gifts two days out of the year. Instead you receive the best care they can give the other 363 days of the year. Losing the importance and frivoloty around your birthday is a side effect.

Everything that Brennan said to try and recover from the birthday thing just made it sadder 💕😭

As horrible as it would be for any of them to die, this was fun to come up with new characters that start with W. The Wizard, The Wild One, and the; Wyvern, Wyrm, Wierd, Warrior, Whimsical, War Caster, War Torn, Watchman, Widowmaker, Weaver, Weasel. Anyone else think of some good ones?

Brennan if you kill The Fox you gotta hold true to that "came back wrong" trope because then they'd stop putting him in danger and also it's a good trope!

I had to pause and go back when brennan started insisting his birthday outlook as a kid wasnt sad because I started laughing too hard I cant even count the amount of timesIve been telling a funny story and been met with sympathy

I absolutely threw myself a birthday thing at work this year for the explicit purpose of seeing a group of people in the same place eating cake they didn't have to bake. It was spectacular and I highly recommend this, yes!!

As a fellow early January birthday haver, I also learned at a young age to not really make a big deal out of them. And very much related to being a reformed birthday grinch haha

I never judge anyone who throws themselves birthday parties because as someone with depression, I've found having a day to celebrate yourself and celebrating making it through another year is a beautiful thing. A reminder that there are still people who love you and there are still more memories to make.

The amount of rich detail behind every character, place and institution Brennan has woven together and connected in this world is absolutely masterful and a joy to listen to. He is a genius world weaver.

I am in love with all things witch lore especially the idea of putting work and effort into making and crafting magic and magic as an ongoing practice! Did the class and or Erika/Brennan take any inspiration from Naomi Novik? She is my favorite author and her novels have a real resonance with some elements of this ongoing story. Especially Uprooted and the Scholomancy series!

One of my favorite days has been the 2022 JoCo Cruise Birthday sailing day. It was everyone's Birthday, and every crewmember and anyone you passed would just wish you a Happy Birthday! and it was just the most incredibly welcoming warm fuzzy feeling day.

My birthday is July 3 (yesterday) and I had the same experience that Brennan talks about at the end of this episode with his birthday. We stopped having parties when I was 8 because no one showed up and I still won't have them now, as an adult, because of that fear. So hearing Brennan's story made me feel very much seen and not alone! Sending love to all the other inconvenient birthday people!

Brennan said he doesn't want magic to be a resource that needs to be managed, but that's exactly what the Mass Produced Magic rule does. "Gotta keep the costs down somehow", but I would think the only cost would be in material for the ring itself. He wants the Witch class to be about crafting, but having one-time-use magic items creates a resource management mechanism.

Just gotta say the “mitigate” bit in the main ep was the funniest thing I’ve heard in ages. Took me out at the knees.

My "Happy Birthday" attitude literally got killed in Kindergarten when I had a Spider-Man party that my parents had thrown all of this money at and made a familial ordeal out of, but no-one came, and I just had to play Spider-Man with my siblings and silly string toys. From then on very honestly even as a child every birthday was "expect disappointment, be happy you got anything" & now as an adult throwing parties gives me horrible anxiety.

It’s interesting that this is the first real bit of shame (or maybe doubt) she has about her training in the Citadel and what it has made her into. When we had that moment of seeing the sea monster I was partly transported to China Meiville’s “The Scar” and the raising of the Avanc. Brennan narrated it amazingly, and the music was awesome.

I totally get Brennan's birthday struggle/acceptance. I was raised Jehovah's Witness and my birthday is on the Dec 29th so even people who wanted to celebrate my birthday really couldn't. At 34yo I've accepted it but I still have friends who get upset that I don't make a big deal for it.

Theres a new fantasy series called in the Shadow of Lightning that has a magic system based on blown glass baubles and they work a lot like the mass produced magic item property. Super cool

Huge props for the way the empire's relationship to magic mirrors Tolkienian orcs relationship to manual war. It's a chilling echo of modern drone-strike-y colonialism. Too, the complete disregard for "this is obviously an important part of the eco-system and, y'know, a living thing" is right in the expectations re: Morrow's Corporate Climber Energy And the thing with the rotating guests...is it an easter egg of Brennan's character names post-Cram Daniels or something more sinister?
