Patreon Exclusive: Solari Episode 10 Fireside Chat

Erika and Brennan take over the Fireside while Lou is away on official crocodile business. They dig into the subtle sexuality of gargoyles, whether petting an orb is the proper way to fly a spaceship, and somehow still end up discussing revolution, mythology, and the nature of the divine. Per usual.

In case you feel like going down memory lane: Rolie Polie Olie, Cybersix, Gargoyles and Jessica Rabbit all received shout-outs today. Happy reminiscing!

And a reminder: Next Tuesday marks the conclusion of Solari Arc 1! We'll return to the present timeline for one final episode before unveiling Lou's thrilling mini-campaign, featuring a very special guest. If you've been waiting to catch up, now's the perfect time to binge Solari!!

History major/archivist here! The American Revolution was part of my specialty and hard agree on the level of mythologizing we've applied to the founding fathers and America's origin. A lot of the founding fathers were also making their money off of smuggling, so when King George finally started taxing and cracking down on smuggling in the colonies, they got their pantaloons in a twist and cried liberty. And a slight correction on Erika: A lot of publications were produced in this era, but even if not as many were literate, tavern/pub culture at the time was where people went to have the news or the latest publication read to them. A lot more people were informed than we give them credit for.

Loved the ending spirituality conversation! Stone cold atheist here too, which makes me feel quite seen and comfortable in y’all’s worlds. Over the past decade I’ve found Carl Sagan’s mode is a strong framework for my spirituality. Now I spend a lot of time in Humanist community with Sunday Assembly, applying and promoting positive values into the world without pointing to a god. Drop by the Los Angeles chapter if you’re ever curious!

brennan really giving credit to kids brains and their ability to be self-aware before experiencing something themselves. i didn't piece anything together like that before feeling it, certainly not putting together context clues.

This episode reminded me of how a week or so ago I was talking with some of my coworkers about shows from our childhoods and I had a show that I remembered watching and couldn’t remember the name of it. I later finally found it. The show was called “Danger Rangers” and it was a single season show on PBS kids from 2005-2006 about anthropomorphic animals that taught kids about safety and went on rescue adventures. Lol I’ve been brought back to a lovely little memory twice😊

Immediately thought of Aeon Flux and Cyber Six for Chi, and of course every weird and/or violent anime from that time. Lain, Kino no Tabi, Parasyte, Mnemosyne, Ergo Proxy, etc.

This reminded me so much of growing up demisexual. 😆 Like understanding attraction as both a concept and as a social norm to perform, especially during middle school and high school.

Just like an airplane, you generally control an irl spaceship with a yoke or a stick. In space the motion happens via thrusters (fast) or gyroscopes (slow) instead of control surfaces like flaps and rudders. It also involves a lot of programmed movement controlled by the computers. https://apod.nasa.gov/apod/image/1204/EndeavourFlightDeck_cooper_1050.jpg For scifi purposes though, orbs, sure, why not?

Aerospace engineer here! Planes and spaceships have 6 degrees of freedom in their moment - up/down, forward/back, left/right (translational motion), and roll, pitch, and yaw (rotational motion). Planes use a steering stick similar to a wheel to control pitch and roll (I believe), and they use foot petals to control yaw - they only really move forward, since they need thrust to fly. Spaceships (I'm thinking of the craft like the space shuttle that dock with the ISS) use a of a steering stick for primarily translational movement and I believe an additional stick to help with rotational control. But anything that accounts for those 6 degrees of freedom would be sufficient! So TLDR- you could use a wheel if you want, you just might need something else too!

P
Patrick Kearney · July 30, 2026

I can only speak from a space sim standpoint, but most space sim nerds tend to use two sticks and a throttle. One stick controls pitch and roll, the other controls vertical and lateral movement and the throttle controls forward and reverse. Then yaw tends to be on pedals

Catholic XLZL made me realize he is basically a version of Adam and Eve where they never eat the apple and gain the wisdom of good and evil, but they get booted from paradise anyways. Now they have to go out and learn right from wrong one sin at a time

The cartoon Eirika is thinking is Cybersix. It's aged alright (except for the designs of the two Asian characters oh no). Idk how queer any of the creators intended it to be, but it feels pretty queer watching it now (I'm not sure how you could read the male love interest as anything other than bi/pan considering he flirts with Cybersix AND her male civilian identity)

From my experience - Sci-fi Spaceships typically use the word "Helm" as the steering mechanism, which does seem to still hearken back to the nautical ship steering term. Helm's etymological roots can be traced back to: Old english "helma" - which means the rudder, or position of guidance and control. Derived from Proto-germanic language for "helmaz" - which refers to a handle, Derived from Proto-indo-european language for "kelp-" - which is to hold or grasp something. (thank you https://www.etymonline.com/word/helm)

I feel like XL-ZL would enjoy the ethical underpinnings of Batman the Animated Series and Superman Animated Adventures. They and Chee might also be intrigued by the Loony Tunes social engineering exploits, combined with obligatory edutainment, of Animaniacs. As an adult Ace person, I can confirm that "understanding attraction as that thing that makes other people go a-woo-gah without experiencing it yourself" is very real and not limited to children. And we're just as confused.

Correct me if I am wrong. I am not a nasa person, but I think space ships are not steered by a person. The calculations are being made by the computers in the control tower, hq or where ever its made. If the calculations are off by even just one number they risk flying off into the endless space. However fantasy can be whatever you would like it to be. I like the orb idea too

e
expandingnebula · July 28, 2026

You are correct that the calculations are made before the launch and are definitely in a computer. It is entirely possible that today’s rockets are steered by computer but if I remember correctly, back in the day the calculations were created and the pilots did most of the steering with gentle thrusters once they were out of earth’s atmosphere and in the vacuum of space. the force of the launch sets the ship in motion/on a trajectory and they continue to move in that direction unless stopped/changed or pulled by gravity (like using an orbit to slingshot around a planet). once in space, you computers supported steering but all calculations and trajectories were drilled into pilots and almost all pilots were air force pilots and went through rigorous training in calculations/steering control/descent/etc. especially with the moon landing as that pod was landed and relaunched by the humans inside. i could be misremembering but i was obsessed with nasa and went to space camp as a kid so that’s my “cred” 😂😂😂😂(but also i’ve been wrong before!)
