Fireside Chat for WWW ep51 "The Endeavor"
Glibby gloop gloopy, Nibby Nabby Noopy, La La La Lo Lo. Sabba Sibby Sabba, Nooby abba Nabba Le Le Lo Lo. Tooby ooby walla, nooby abba nabba, Early mornin' poddin' song. It's another Fireside Chat about the episode that just came out! We're talking MINMAXING ANIMISM, we're talking NEUTRONS (THE THINGS NEUTRON STARS ARE BASED ON), We're talking DA TRIVIA KING. Truly, the Fireside Chats is a land of contrasts.

Tell me why when Ame said she had a disguise i just imagined her pulling wigs and outfits out of her pack instead of casting Disguise self 😂😂😂😂😂
This actually is the most important question: why is NO ONE addressing the fart at 40:38?? I am crying 😂
i need to know who farted at 40:47 because it had me crying laughing at my desk
NEED THAT NORAM SOUNDTRACK 🩵🌊🫧
WE COULD’VE HAD AABRIA IN DATE EVERYTHING 😭
Woaahhh that GLaDOS parallel is actually crazy I’m gonna be thinking about that for a while

I normally listen to the fireside on a different app but I came here specifically to see if anyone had put together a list and I am.not disappointed. You absolutely nailed it!! Thank you!!
Did…did Brennan make a killsixbilliondemons reference with “if you see the Buddha on the road, kill him”? Or is that just two great things drawing from the same well?
same well, its from 9th century monk Linji Yixuan
I actually think Ame and Suvi could just easily be flipped as the Magician and the High Priestess, in some ways I’d say that’s even more fitting
“Watch the skieeeeees!”
Taylor Moore more like Taylor Most
This gd show is so gosh dang good it makes me not even want to attempt dm-ing anymore because by turn flashlights on during the day time
EFAC????!!??!!
Yknow, the Man In Black gotta take a page or two or three from DEATH from Discworld. He'd be dealing so much better with himself and his role/existance. Something something "What can the harvest hope for, if not for the care of the reaper Man?"
Yeah in terms of like, peace with their role vs antagonism of mortals, it's like discworld's death, the book thief's death, puss in boots' death, and then the man in black. Like, pilgrim under stars views himself as a violent end and not a peaceful one. Like, none of those other deaths would have taken those children like that or dragged Curran back
Wait Aabria was gonna be in the game?? WHAT WERE THEY GONNA BE? WHAT??
I feel like DnD is the combination of the poetic brain and the logical monkey brain, and it IS good 😊
He will sleep this one out, I'm sure. His asshole elemental child, Eursulon's big bro, though...
I'm reading every comment to get into the minds of everyone, but I just wanted to say: to me the Emperor is Steel. The discourse she gives about what it takes to lead, willingly taking a hit because someone has to for the Greater Good, is the essential definition of the Emperor. Also, the Emperor can be a fucked up card as well as a beautiful one, because they are ready to do WHATEVER to create the structure where others can thrive. Steel is my Emperor.
Also, Yorin as Strength, making peace and accepting the beast within as part of yourself. "Every form is my true form".
Was the encounter with sir Curran and the stranger at startings ford? Did I just completely miss that, when was it said in the episode?
It's kind of implied but easy to miss. When Brennan describes the place, he says the whole thing about this being a crossroad between the road and water, calling the place a ford, and there being a lots of starlings (birds) around.
Could I get a discord invite if there is one? Thanks!
I think this is it! https://discord.gg/worldsbeyondpod
Hang on. BRENNAN: when you seeded the bit about Suvi's parents and the reflexive indicative in ep14, was that the first foreshadowing of the reveal at the end of episode 51? About a spell referencing the origin as the caster being unnecessary for casting, perhaps because spells are spirits? You fuck
I full body clenched in worry that Suvi’s parents are now up there 😬 but my real theory is that maybe her dad is a live and just in the near spirit or the spirit.
You all are truly some of the most talented story tellers I've had the privilege to listen to. This story has all the weight of Tolkien, the twists of Sanderson and the childlike wonder of Lewis, and yet it feels and reads and unfolds as something completely its own. These firesides are so worth whatever you'd charge for it just to hear how excited you all are about it too. There's nothing worse than hearing your favorite actor or athlete hates their craft and listening to these keeps the dream alive that telling stories and weaving wonder with your friends is a good thing and a thing worth doing.
Can we get a Witch subclass that min-maxes animism? A sort of Artificer rival that get a juiced up boost to their Token mechanic. Maybe even add some Hexblade flavoring to add some spice! I'm only half-joking
I feel like Animist should be it's own class. A cross between Artificer, Duid, & Pathfinder's Thaulmaturge. Instead of speak with animals, they'd cast speak with everything. They'd be packrats with tons of gear & the more they talk to their gear the more it comes alive & wants things, but it also becomes more potent.
The Absolute NADDPOD Cold Open it all
Isn't is a Bavarian fire drill? Or do I just need a donut?
It is a Bavarian fire drill, Aabria is just a silly little guy
(This is intended to be partially comedic, please take it with a grain of salt.) VILLANY! TREACHERY TRICKERY VILLANY! How could you betray us like this Brennan? "The poetic and the real must be kept separate" no nO NO NO NO THAT'S WHEN YOU GET THE BEST STUFFF!!! Seeing the ways in which the poetic and the real interact make for fascinating stories, and clever out of the box solutions "Something in that crossover does something that I gotta watch out for" NO BUT DELICIOUS POEM TOAST! What properties does poem toast have Brennan? Maybe it could feed people off of stories themselves and thereby solve world hunger. Closing that path off means dooming people to starvation. I have several different food allergies Brennan! Maybe poem toast is the only kind of food I can have. Let me outline how we can kill the King of Night with this thinking. First, we lure him onto a road that we have prepared. An important strategic goal, or someone he really wants to kill. He walks forward and the night follows him, plunging the road into darkness. He steps forward, indomitable and unflinching, relentless as the coming of death and dusk. He walks the road to seek his foe, and nothing can dissuade him from his path. Then we blow up the road both ahead and behind him using spellweave patards, with enough magnitude to make sure the pavestones fly apart throughly. He cannot walk where there are no roads, so now we have him trapped. It is at this point that the Citadel's paradigm becomes key. White sand. Sunscorched desert. Heat. Glass. Beautiful glass that catches the light. It is forever night in The Stranger's domain, but we have brought sunlight in our hands. Vessels of glass enchanted to collect and hold sunlight, built by the Wizard Shine. With these, we can cast a spell to scorch or at least illuminate the Man In Black with the sunlight. Being a spirit of the night and shadows and mystery now suddenly illuminated by sunlight, this would invalidate the thaumopsychosocial paradigm that he lives within, which should strongly injure him if not kill him. Hopefully that will work. If not, we might have to do the bit more extreme and complex Sunlight Cannon Long Gun, which might not work out depending on setting metaphysics. I'm telling you, poem toast is delicious.
Thank you!
Ευχές??? Omg that's a genius piece of redditry. What an insane episode and a much needed conversation!
Gang do we have a fan discord or something I, we, look we need to get together and start, just, look I'm gonna go get a whiteboard

Brennan over-tired quoting scooby doo after being asked by his near-tears best friends why he would put their childhood hero though such violence and tragedy is a perfect example for my argument that he is THE most genuinely funny person of our day and age 🫶
Taking bets that Efshess is a Simulacrum
Nah, my bet is the Wizard equivalent of a Transhuman upgrade individual. Someone who has modified themselves enough to no longer be strictly human, or a mind-upload/full-body Prosthetic cyborg/ai built from the neural pathing of a previous person... Which i guess could be a simulacrum... Oh... oh what if they're a Citadel LICH??? OH NO
All of the revelations of this fireside and my mind skipped a beat when I heard Covel Commons for the first time in YEARS. UGH, loved having brunch there and haven't been back since they replaced it with Epicuria
Speaking of Tarot, it was all I could think of when Yewolah spoke to Hakea; The roots and branches intertwine, the chalice holds, the basket weaves, the web connects. Hope, as most things, can be made by clever hands and stout hearts.
the best storytellers in the game
I feel like the bit at 42:10 means the glassers tamori’d themselves. Can’t wait to see how it all turns out.
yo dawg i heard you like tamori so i put a tamori in your tamori so you can be a tamori while making tamori
So the end goal for the Emperor of this research is inevitably going to be classic "Make me an immortal god" right? Or will he be satisfied with an army of enslaved gods?
It's cryptocurrancy, yes but maybe more urgently AI: a group attempting to create intelligence with the full intention of subjugating it.
My mind went to AI as soon as Steel talked about how wielding the language (lingua arcana) was enough to make something as powerful and meaningful as a spirit. This part made me want to go back to Arc 2, to when the party were studying in Suvi's tower and we find out that, for the Wizards, the lingua arcana is a way to make magic, a energy of the Spirit World, something more tangible. I'm earning for ep. 51's transcript
OK but Worlds Beyond Number Tarot deck when???
illustrator here: as soon as I possibly can 🫡
Can we get a fun mini adventure focusing on Neif dealing with the house and spirits in Ame’s absence?
1. SO EXCITED to see how all of that crazy Citadel spell/spirit research plays with the OG magic used to create the Citadel from that interlude episode. 2. Thank goodness SOMEONE thought to do something in response to Indri's infinite spyglass. I've been screaming about it since Suvi left the Conclave. "MAYBE YOU SHOULDN'T DO BATTLE PLANNING OR MOVEMENTS UNDER THE CLEAR NIGHT SKY. HMMMM?" 3. No matter what Suvi does going forward, I'll always think of and love Aabria's deep growl, "Light of the Citadel," before popping off that spell, episodes ago. It hits my more violent rebellion nerves in a very satisfying way without me being violent... if that makes sense... 4. Damn. If anyone was going to win back a powerful wizard who wants to walk away from the Citadel, it would have to be Steel and her intimate knowledge of Suvi's aspirations and curiosity. It's a BDE move to risk giving so much information to a potential traitor and so much power over a key military operation despite that potential traitor's childhood soulmate... like, that's some fucking confidence. Brennan, you're making me so uncomfortable with this emotional manipulation bs and I hate how good it is for the story. 😫
And I guess True Friend is this world's analog of soulmate, but I couldn't think of the wording when writing >.<
Wait, when did we learn about Ame’s immortal ancestor?
Right there with you. Crazy "whaaat??" moment for me.
Erika: “we need to invite an existential philosopher on here and have a little talk [about anismism]” WBN: *invites Grant*
Lol
This is bullshit; Rex Query but still NO Dime Pimento???
does anyone know if suvi knows that níf is staying at ame's cottage? i just realised she hasn't been back there since the second episode!
I believe so. Suvi had left the Palace of Wind and Stars before Ame and Eursulon abducted/liberated Nif, but Ame did bring up the plan to “pin a note to the front child” of the Granoe, which doesn’t make sense unless there’s someone at the cottage to receive it. However, it’s possible Ame didn’t elaborate and Suvi assumed it was meant for Lohan, or some other local authority.
at 9:22, there is no way that steel can be allowed to know about ame's immortal ancestor after she obliterated an entire family line oh my god
we'd all much rather she use it on emperor aroshmandir saraz, like the wizard grey accused her of on the epiphany
I found The Wizard, the Witch, and the Wild One just 3 weeks ago when my podcast app suggested it. I knew most of the cast from Dropout so I checked it out. After just listening to the first episode of The Children’s Adventure, I fell headfirst into the world. I was completely captivated and couldn’t stop listening. I’ve just now caught up to episode 51, joined the Patreon, and I’m diving into all the bonus content. I grew up surrounded by D&D. My mom hosted D&D parties in the early ’80s (right in the middle of the satanic panic). I’m a lifelong gamer, always drawn to fantasy and MMORPGs. I never played D&D, but I passed the love of the genre on to my son who now DMs D&D games for his friends. Normally, my neuro-spicy brain figures out where a story’s going pretty quickly, but the dice keep things unpredictable in the best way. I’ve never experienced a story quite like this, and since the beginning I've kind of obsessed over wondering how much is planned versus improvised. Whatever the mix is, it works! I’m all in and can’t wait to see what’s next for this chaotic crew of magic misfits! Thank you all for sharing your story with us!
Holy cow, three weeks? Have you eaten? Slept? Welcome!
I would like to pitch a name for the Conjuration/Abjuration hybrid school of magic studied in Lucent: Perjuration. The Latin root /iuro/ means “to swear an oath,” from /ius/ “law.” Following this meaning, Conjuration means “the swearing together of things” and, perhaps more colloquially in Latin, “the swearing together in conspiracy.” Likewise, Abjuration means “the denial of oaths.” I also love that this suggests that the Citadel has lost the plot enough in their hubris that they don’t even realize they’ve named their schools of magic Conspiracy and Oathbreaking. I feel this supports Brennan’s theme of the failures and unseen costs of taxonomy. If, in the context of wizardry in Umora, we take the suffix -jure to more specifically mean “the binding of the spirit in accordance with the laws of magic under the auspice of a mortal’s will,” then we can take Conjuration to mean “the binding and calling of the Spirit to a wizard’s cause,” and Abjuration to mean either “the denial of spiritual binding” (i.e. Dispel Magic) or “the binding of the Spirit to causes of denial” (i.e. Mage Armor). I think Perjuration is fitting, as it means “to knowingly swear an oath falsely,” and could be interpreted in the context of magic to mean “to bind the Spirit in contradiction and usurpation of the Spirit.” It’s also fun that perjure and purger are homophones, reminding those with good sense that the reality of The Great Endeavor is to purge the world of Great Spirits. Thank you for reading my TedTalk!
The moment when I realise I'm paying for the WBN content, but the privilege of deep dives in the comment section 💯👌🏻
Kinda irrelevant but I'm listening to ep 5 and Ame tells Suvi "I'm just worried that ghost will be seen as a tool as opposed to a person hoping to learn and study and flourish" and it's making me sooooooo freaking sad
Suvi was so defensive and cagey and she also said "how could she possibly be worse off" ☠️☠️☠️
Every wizard needs a 4 hour course on what Money Laundering is. They didn't MAKE a "spirit of the well", they just stuck a bunch of "spirit of the rock" fragments together and waited for some spirit of the water to filter in. "Oh, it's bigger?" Uh, yeah! It's sick! It's enflamed! You fools!
wait, seriously, not joking, I used to know a Vatican astronomer…🫢
Please say more about this fascinating titbit!
But where is Sir Curran’s bird? Did the bird grow up into the Roc? Did the bird die? *Is the bird okay?*
the roc's origins as ygraine is a fun theory! but she's named after the woman who died giving birth to the future king arthur of the round table, so i assume whatever happened to her was just as tragic! her name was probably yet another sign that sir curran was doomed from the start ;-;
Hey shout to zen koans ! this podcast abounds with references to subjects that always come straight out of left field whilst always also making so much sense
We called it the frustrated busy walk in high school when we didn't want the drama teacher to give us things to do and we had to walk past her
🎶 Now I've heard there was a secret court That Suvie found, and it pleased Aabriya, But you don't really care for magic, do you? 🎶
The hard hat and high vis vest trick to get into places never fails and honestly it shouldn't bc that's how you get to see and do so much cool stuff. Loved Ame's sneaky vibe. Could watch a full spy show about sneaky witches.
In the real world, it fails all of the time.
This is my favorite story of all time. I have already listened to ep. 51 three times because my brain is on overload with the lore dumps and story threads that are being pulled by all! I’m lost.
For one sec i though it was Mr music big T that stated to sing for us in the last minute, not ganna lie
THE RESONANCE WITH THE DESERT SAND ARE YOU KIDDING I'M LOSING MY MIND
I would be a fool (derogatory) to throw my hands up and say "C'mon Aabriya, focus! Storytelling is a basketball game and the characters the ball.", but I will 100% throw my hands up at Double Agent Wizard Sky of the Magical CIA earnestly quoting her Boss/Mom/Kung-Fu Master's worst enemy right to her face, and I wait excitedly for The Consequences :D
Can someone explain the end to me? 🤣
Steel is part of a secret group of Wizards who are trying to figure out how to make their own spirits as a means of ultimate control.
May I please put in a humble request to spell it Effschesse?
Only if we at the fireside get to pronounce it “Effs-chess-ayyy” with a carefree wrist flip
Ah, silly Brennan. Some of us already made a major arcana line up of tWtWatWO months, if not years ago.
Some of us may have a spreadsheet of these and their reasoning. Some of us may have even started adding minor arcana to events in the story thus far. Some of us.... Some. 👉🏻👈🏻
that addiction is precisely why the joke exists that music producers will spend hours on end tweaking that snare... very very well put... I am so in love with this series
I'm guessing this is our last big Steel conversation of the arc, since there is so much going on. And again so much is left unsaid. Suvi has already kinda told Steel she's met Eioghorain by asking earlier about what happened when the Accadator found out about the League of Whispers, so quoting him here is just confirmation. Steel promised no more secrets, but still has not given any of that history nor discussed the geas. She tells no more than she must to get Suvi hooked (she thinks) on the next thing, with time pressure as a constant, reasonable excuse.
At least she is in charge of the witch war, her, Ame and Eursolon can work together to sway other spirits to stop killing all humans
So the glass wizards are definitely just wish spell to temori
I think they might be…Liches instead. It could go either way.
Gotta say, just finished listening to the latest episode, and that last note it ended on is absolutely terrifying. Ready to hear the fireside chat about the episode
Is that 🎶 everything you ever wanted 🎶 a call out to Dr. Horrible's Sing-along Blog?!
Wait when was it established that Ame’s ancestor is a vampire?
When Ame gets her Wren contacts back start of act two one of them is a guy who got screwed by a spirit of the moon with eternal life provided he never denies help to one of his descendants But now centuries later he’s related to half the world and Ame got psyched to realize she had a known living family member, however distant an ancestor
ep 00 Prelude: "For a moment the sun, captured against the horizon while stars gleam as the heavens cannot seem to agree, in the face of endless magic, what the truth of this world should be." ep 51 The Endeavor: "this world has a hard time remembering what's true"
Damn, now I’m hungry for some poem toast.
I couldn't help but fill out the full list: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1FKF53zaLeU3w0n7IzGWhpgS2KCw4YkdiqY0WXK1q6M8/edit?usp=sharing
I love this and can’t argue(not that I’d want to) a single one of your choices.
Oh well if I don’t get a glass tower as the Tower card I’m gonna scream
Also... The spirit of the spirit of the thing isn't cryptocurrency.... It's cryptidcurrency
Ah, I see what you did there😂
I'm listening to this again, and I'm in awe of Lou's emotional intelligence and insight in how he discusses these things.
Can't manage the full Major Arcana, but going by the meaning of the cards, Reversed Hermit = Indri, The Hierophant = Wizard Sleep, The Lovers (no, these aren't inherently romantic) = Stone/Wrensong, The Tower = Antivoliant Movement, Reversed Justice (or reversed Moon?) = Steele, Reversed Sun = Niamh, the Chariot = Wizard Keen
I think the Hierophant might be Steel because it represents institutions and hierarchy
RELEASE THE TAROT MERCH !!!!!!!
Agree
Is Task the most caked up this season?
my thoughts exactly
I'm here to shout about if you want to see the disturbing real world equivalent of "Lucent's Court Hall of Achievements" y'all need to visit the National Atomic Museum in Las Vegas. I wanted to yell that when Las Alamos was mentioned as a template for the wizards.
Ecaf (accidentally) mentioned!!!🪞🪞🪞🪞🪞
I’m glad I’m not the only one that caught that. Fabian wants a turn in Umora
0-The Fool: Eursalon 1-The Magician: Suvi 2-High Priestess: Ame 3-The Empress: Orima 4-The Emperor: Silence 5-The Hierophant: Hakea 6-The Lovers: Soft and Stone 7-The Chariot: Quest Fever!!!!! 8-Strength: The Fox 9-The Hermit: Indri 10-The Wheel of Fortune: Silver 11-Justice: Slate 12-The Hanged Man: Enzo (or Will Gallows haha) 13-Death: Gramore 14-Temperance: Naram 15-The Devil: Pomeroy 16-The Tower: The Man in Black 17-The Star: Sonder 18-The Moon: Tefmet 19-The Sun: Mr Callum or Mr Soup or maybe Tof the coal spirit 20-Judgement: Eighorain 21-The World: Yewola (the world tree) or Kalaya Honorable Mention-Queen of Pentacles: Grandma Wren (been thinking this since The Conclave) This was so fun to do and I love reading everyones 💞
This would make me so happy because the Queen of Pentacles is my patron!
a lot of great picks for an umora tarot deck! morrow even has his episode titles after 'the king of cups' after all!
and dont forget all the cups and wells associated with the man in black, or the well metaphor that was used by steel in her explanation of the court of lucent which really wraps it all back around to what morrow was doing in port talon
I will have to come back to this after work, but straight up (within the context of Tarot,) The Devil is the Wizard Saber.
The comment about a monkey is really funny to me, since I've just started reading "Journey To The West". Not only is "monkey mind" the commonplace in Buddhist and Daoist thought (for the anxious skittering mind) that inspired Sun Wukong, but he straight up tries to overthrow reality once he accumulates enough magical powers.
this was one of my fave weird simpsons episodes growing up, glad it got a shout out lol it also had the classic DIE >> DIET sign gag... anyway Steel really scares me, probs more than the MIB. Something about being a mortal yet having the ego to justify becoming a monster to essentially control the "gods" of this world... so extreme.
“If you should meet god on the road, kill him” -Meti ten Maya
0 – The Fool - The Fox I – The Magician - Sky II – The High Priestess - Grandma Wren III – The Empress - Indri IV – The Emperor - Steel V – The Hierophant - Silver VI – The Lovers - Orima and Naram VII – The Chariot - Eursulon VIII – Strength - Grimore IX – The Hermit - Hakea X – The Wheel of Fortune - Soft XI – Justice - Stone XII – The Hanged Man - Sly XIII – Death - The Man in Black XIV – Temperance - Galani XV – The Devil - Will Gallows XVI – The Tower - The Citadel XVII – The Star - Ame XVIII – The Moon - Mirara XIX – The Sun - The Great Bullfrog XX – Judgment - Eioghorain XXI – The World - Kalaya
Tarot suggestion - The Man in black is 1000% The Devil (for the deals we are forced to keep. Wren is the Hierophant (for the wisdom and the tools she gives). Steel is The Chariot or Justice (for her willpower and readiness for sacrifice of the greater good). Sir Kieran is strength. I love the Great Bear for the chariot as well. I’ll come up with more.
Some minor arcana thoughts!! Nif is the 9 of Swords. I am picturing her clutching her head in front of the bathtub full of swords. Kalaya is the 10 of Pentacles. Family, abundance, etc.
CW self-harm 39:50 - 40:00
the revelation of the citadel arc reminds me so much of the Ted Chiang short story "Seventy-Two letters" (where the premise is that the legend of the Prague golem is both real and reproducible, so all science from pre-industrial revolution til now becomes entirely focused on "hey, so it turns out there is a 'divine' language, that language is knowable, and it has knowable rules...") Really excited to see how this plays out in the universe, it opens up the world to so many fun/terrifying human impulses in re: knowledge and control
great association (/great author/great story!)
Hey so are we as a fanbase collectively on board with the team missing a fireside sometimes if it means they get to sleep for more than three hours? Because like damn, I know babies is terrifying but I don't want any of the sleep deprivation to be from our lil bonus content.
As the parent of two children under age 5, he’s still not gonna sleep without the podcast.
Hear me out. Level 20 Eurselon. There can’t be 2 great bears! Father vs. son! Rawr! lol
Waiting to hear that Eursalon gonna usurp his father for crown when we find out where THAT Great Spirit lands on the war 😅
I fear this podcast is going to push me to do fan art for the first time in a decade, between the images conjured here of the party as tarot cards and how I pictured Sir Curran during the episode--Brennan's description of him as one of the saintly dead, with his throat pierced through by an arrow, immediately invoked imagery of St. Sebastian for me. Also, my deepest condolences to Aabria re: going to Lutheran school, coming from someone who was kicked out of Lutheran church as a teenager. 💀
That sounds truly, so dope! Fan art of sir Curran is severely lacking. If your planing on drawing him in full harness, I suggest looking at Knyght Errant’s late 14th century English harness as example, it’s one of the first couple google results for historical English harness, and his YouTube channel is very informative on armor mechanics. :)
Wait so there IS a book 2 of WWW1? There was previously so much talk about it ending in August and being a new campaign by Abria?
The ending in August would be temporary. I believe they’d like to run this campaign all the way level 20.
Omg so when are we getting a WW&W tarot set?! 😂
The man in black infects me with vocal stims so bad and I’ve been saying “they got those boots off him realll quick” under my breath at work since this episode came out
😂😂
Can we get Task to sing a GLaDOS-style song at the end? “Goodbye My Citadel…You Thought You’d Live Forever…Too bad Umora wouldn’t take your shit” “Your magic was so vast…Oh, did you think I meant you…More so the Gaothmai…Empire, Witches, and Spirits” “You want the old world broken…That’s what you’re counting on…We put up with your bullshit…Now we’re simply glad you’re gone”
I cheered at Brennan saying "You think you control the horizontal and the vertical, but you couldn't even control this spider made of mirror glass." Followed by Aabria making the connection between Task and Suvi, and saying, "I was made in a lab for this shit, and even I don't fuck with you like that."
Okay but now that they’ve made it known it exists we all agree that the next piece of merch has to be little Glass Task spiders right?
I looked into it: WAY too expensive. Maybe one day???
god a WBN x philosophy tube chat abt animism would unravel my soul
Oh, my…that would be wonderful. Haven’t been down a rabbit hole in some time🦊🔥🤗
As someone who works in the game industry, "Be careful when you cross the poetic and the analytical" made me exhale very deeply.
Uhm I would buy THE FUUUUUUUXXXXX out of a WWW tarot deck
Reposting outside of a reply since i worked on it for a needlessly long time: First run, I'm sure there are some characters that should be in it that I didnt include because I didn't have a great fit: The Fool: Eursolon The Magician: Suvi The High Priestess: Ame The Empress: Wren The Emperor: Steel The Hierophant: Naram (literally couldn't come up with anyone else) The Lovers: Soft & Stone The Chariot: Orima Strength: Sir Curran (feels perfect with the traditional art including a beast being tamed) The Hermit: Tefmet Wheel of Fortune: The Coven of Elders Justice: Sworn The Hanged Man: Will Gallows Death: The Man in Black Temperance: Sonder The Devil: Silver (Might feel weird but given what he represents to Suvi I like it; he's what she might have been, as well as her attachment, a person who binds her to the Citadel) The Tower: The Citadel The Star: Kalaya The Moon: Nif The Sun: The Fox Judgement: Eighorain/The Battle of Twelvebrooks The World: The Cottage
Did I miss the lore about Ame's Great x12 Grandfather? What's going on there?
Same, I missed something somewhere.
TAYLOR GOT ME CACKLING AT THE END 😂🤣🤣
Fireside is an excellent name, I sat down to listen and woke up 2.5 hrs later. Not a dig, apparently that’s how peaceful I find listening to you all - and I have cfs so sleep is always a possibility if I stop doing things 🙈😄😌
Agree. Between listening to back episodes of The Adventure Zone and this podcast, I can guarantee a sleep filled dream escape 🦊❤️🔥
A-hoo-hoo crackle crackle! 🔥 Today’s fireside is making me think… 🧙♀️Witches (and animism) = Waldorf…schools, not salad 🥗 🪄Wizards (and authoritarianism) = Catholic schools (and Lutheran, based on Aabria’s comments and how Suvi is deconstructing from the Citadel) 🐻Wild Ones = Reggio Emilia?? Based off of how Lou plays Eursalon, I think Eursalon in particular matches up with Montessori philosophy of education but the spirits in general, maybe Reggio Emilia? Thoughts? 💭
I can't help but feel that the cutoff for optimizers was choosing to delay taking the Paladin Oath for the sake of the story. Narrative choices are important and good ^^
Major Arcana! Disclaimer, this is based on the booklet that came with my cards. The blanks are ones I don't think we have good candidates for yet, the asterisks are ones I think could be but might change farther into the story. We're still very early in the journey!! 0 The Fool - Eursalon 1 The Magician - Suvi 2 High Priestess - Ame 3 The Empress - Orima 4 The Emperor - Naram 5 Hierophant - Silence 6 The Lovers - Soft and Stone 7 The Chariot - Steel 8 Strength - Grandma Wren 9 The Hermit - Indri 10 Wheel of Fortune - Nif* 11 Justice - Port Talon* 12 The Hanged Man - Will Gallows* / Hana 13 Death - Hakea 14 Temperance - Mr. Soup 15 The Devil - Keen/The Man in Black 16 The Tower - The Citadel 17 The Star - 18 The Moon - Mirara* 19 The Sun - The Fox* 20 Judgement - 21 The World - I don't think Will Gallows actually represents the spirit of the card for the party, he just literally is a hanged man
I think Nif is better fitted to the Star though I don’t have an alternate for Wheel of Fortune (Hana?) Surely Death=Man in Black while Keen=Devil. I like these choices though!
Brennan just copping to Liches???
The Mr Callum discussion seemed like a "Do not underestimate the power of witches (derogatory)"
Spirits in all things this was good. I adore getting to unpack the ideas of this story with its creators and while pulling apart this puzzle also getting to appreciate it for the beautiful experience it is.
Yes.
Hell yes Date Everything shout out! No spoilers but Erika definitely lives up to their status as a proud representative of the Horner Corner.
I just remembered: mirror spiders are a real thing! Did you know? I'll bet Brennan did. https://www.sciencefriday.com/articles/picture-of-the-week-sequined-spider/
I didn’t and found that block fascinating, once again really wish I didn’t detest spiders.
Y'all have executed the "magic as technology" metaphor so well, and have really captured the agony of being fascinated and amazed and inspired by new discoveries and advancements only to remember that they will inevitably be used for something horrible.
It sucks that the citadel is so awesome, I'm fully indoctrinated. Also having just played a lot of Elder Scrolls Online's Mirrormoor and Lucent Citadel content I'm kind of losing it over the coincidence. If there is a spirit with split personalities and memory loss I'll go ape.
Mr. Query jokes about replaying scenes and stopping to ask questions, but I for reals would love to hear creator commentary. Each player picks a few scenes that feature their character and breaks down for us what went into their choices, and Brennan does the same with world building and plot twists? Om nom nom! I'd eat that up! We kind of get that here, but I'm talking about a beat-by-beat commentary directed by the cast members themselves - what do they want us to understand about their performance?
Fuck! Date Everything as a physical example of animism and a way for student to full grasp the concepts (especially the more meta concepts) is too perfect and damnit I will never get it approved to use
devastated i didn't get to ask my important question of "does lucent have a ping pong table in true tech start up fashion?" last week.
ALSO the fact that the court where they are verging on spirit stuff is the 25th of 24 courts THE EXTRA HOUR THE WITCHING HOUR!!!
The section with Eursalon and the man in black truly had my mouth agape.
I would buy a WBN tarot deck SO FAST
Me too!!
COOKIE CLICKER!! Damn, ya’ll.
If anything can be a spirit and Wizards can make a spirit of anything (or are at least working on that) then does that mean the Citadel might have literal school spirit? ... Like yes, that's a bit. But also I am legit terrified at the conceptual spirit of Kamsaran Empire jingoism personified.
Learning that MIB was kept locked up by Wren (shout-out to witches, don't FUCK with witches man) my brain every time he comes up now is just 🎶comin out of my cage and I've been doin just fine 🎶
Tarot Pitch: (I agree with the first three already) The Empress: Indry The Emperor: Steel The Heirophant: Sworn The Lovers: Soft and Stone The Chariot: Silver Strength: Orima The Hermit: Mirara The Wheel of Fortune: Sly Justice: Eoighorain The Hanged Man: Sir Curran Death: Gramore Temperance: Naram The Devil: The Man in Black The Tower: The Citadel (Silence) The Star: Nif The Moon: Grandmother Wren The Sun: Kaliah (sp?) Judgement: Hakea The World: Tephmet
I went more with the emotional meaning of the cards over literal imagery here, which is why Steel isn't the Tower, and Man in Black is the Devil instead of Death. (though definitely multiple cards could fit each character) Grandmother Wren is the Moon to me because it's associated with mystery and regret/indecisiveness, which fits Ame's relationship to her legacy!
I need a playbook to Umora and I need it to be accompanied by a detailed and illustrated 1000+ page appendix of the metaphysics of anything can be a spirit.
“It’s cookie clicker” made me think hey the entire team needs to play universal paper clip. It’s literally what they’re talking about and I think they’d all enjoy it.
One of my favorite games of all time. -t
Can anyone remind me where the Man in Black hunting Suvi and Wren trapping him would’ve been mentioned before? I can’t recall
Wren warning Suvi not to step on a road and when Wren goes down into the spring in the basement, both during the children's adventure, and I think the episode where Ame gets back all her memories (episode 15) or where she finds/claims the spring and cottage (episode 23)?
There was so much amazing stuff going on with the music this episode, especially with Lucent. The moment that sticks out to me most though is right after Steel’s “Kid, you’re right on target.” That introduction of the horns after a lot of light piano and the silence directly before is so striking and so perfect with the moment. It’s giving “we’ve been floating around in the theoretical whimsy, and now the machine is back, and it’s in full force.” But also, the way the brass is mixed louder than the voices were in those first moments, and continues to overshadow the piano made my brain immediately go “Oh we’re doing Shostakovich 5,” and I don’t know if that was intentional inspiration but it certainly feels thematically appropriate!
I submit Sir Curran as the Hanged Man. Suspended between here and there.
The outro......
The fact that they've established that no one's really auditing the requisitions of high ranking wizards is hilariously setting up Suvi having a "pay no attention to what's behind the curtain" side project. Like she's absolutely min maxing Citadel resources to take down the witches, but then when it's all said and done she drops the curtain and reveals that she'd been ordering double the whole time to craft her machinations to dismantle the Citadel.
Aabria's about to be like Brennan in Unsleeping City going "gonna kill that dog 😜" and it'll be Suvi geeking out going "gonna kill those witches 😜"
That fucking Tarot connection AABRIA!!!!! I clapped and rejoiced. Will be doing that homework for sure.
Post pictures, please!
Not the Date Everything plug 😂
Have they talked about Ame’s ancestor before?? Please point me in the direction. This was new info to me
I was wondering the same thing. I'm wracking my memory
So Suvi pulled an Omniman "This isn't your world to Conquer" with the Tearing down the tower.
Suvi is the unwilling protagonist of "Those Who March Back into Omelas"
I desperately need to see the lil Task, please post pics! I'm so glad to hear the cast call out that Wren trapped MiB on a road. Did she trap him on the road outside her house in Toma? Wild flex. Also: the first person warned not to touch foot to road was NOT Suvi. keep watching the skiis!
Also hail the mods for doing hard work when posters get ahead of their skiis 😅
Honestly, my high school experience might have been simpler and less abusive if I had to fight my teacher to graduate.
Holy shit can we have a whole tarot deck? Omg please can we have a whole tarot deck 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼
🎶”Aabria plays Jeff now…”🎶 love this sitcom opening theme song for book 2.
i am not a tarot/magic kind of person but i feel am slowly becoming more and more tarot coded with each piece of media i consume
:o I feel like I secondhand taught Brennan a thing with the Greek translation… I’m so proud 😭 this whole ep was so freakin cool folks
I listened to the episode, and then got to hear the rain road performed live on the same day unexpectedly… needless to say, I was a whole mess
ChatGPT =temori. Or NFTs?
TARROT THOUGHTS: 0. Eursulon 1. Suvi 2. Ame (Bc i love aabriya's idea of starting out w them, we free ballin from here) I want THE EMPRESS to be wren THE EMPEROR is giving steel vibes THE LOVERS gotta go either to suvi's parents or to suvi and silver right? THE HERMIT is giving sly THE HANGED MAN is will gallows obv DEATH is the Man in black I think yorin has the vibe to pull off THE DEVIL but that feels like a weak choice he's so cool TOWER ... is just the tower. See.. i Want an indri card but like... the star is such a good card and indri is so meannn MOON gotta be marara I want more witches in there but idk where id put them... boo!
the lovers Has to be Naram and Orima, though, right?!
We will tell all the rest. Thank you.
You guys should get Proffesor Lando from the Lando Institute of Guidance Maturity and Academics for the next Horner Corner.
I'm assuming that's the Wizard Sunny we're hearing with the rattle and I love it. Also Aabria, we absolutely need to see Task!
It's ok. I was chanting "Without Whom"
To be fair, he say Without Whom at least once in that sequence.
The idea of being such a powerful abjuror that you confidently turn yourself into glass is such a cool way to show that confidence
I'm really glad Aabria touched on Suvi's inner thoughts because I'm not going to lie, I thought she had switched teams and I was very concerned.
I absolutely love the monkey's paw of the new station and secret court. Steel thinks she's pacifying Suvi's antics but she's actually giving her the tools she needs to level the Citadel
Desperately need to see art of the three tarot cards
Manifesting a future update for Date Everything where Aabria voices the telescope and Taylor voices the microphone
i know naram has pledged himself to the man in black, but like… surely he can just be, like. inefficient. y’know? you don’t have to *really* try that hard. you can pull punches.
There are probably magical rule reasons for why he has to do some actual damage. Like when the Man in Black says "Kill that guy" he just has to do it.
Crackle, crackle!
Love the WWW tarot talk!!!
I need the deck now!!!
Canonically, the clicking noise you hear this whole episode is Rex looking up more facts
Ecaf mentioned?!? How does Rex know about Fabian Seacaster’s one true love?
IDK If this is right, but I feel like theres a connection between Sir Curran's missing paldron and the fact that he died by taking an arrow in the neck... Edit: thanks for catching that Carrie😊
Paldron, and yes.
omg a WWW tarot deck would slap so hard. I have some thoughts for characters and their major arcana card Steel is the hierophant Sly is the hermit The man in black is death now maybe weird but I would say that Orima is the emperor and Naram the empress, though they could also just be the lovers together giving us more cards for other characters sir curren would be the chariot Eioghorain could be strength, but I think the moon is a cooler choice because of its association to dreams and his whole speech regarding who is dreaming who Indri would be the devil Grandma Wren is temperance the citadel itself should be the tower which feels like it is on the nose but the meaning holds up really well Nig gets stars which is also a cool allusion to Indri's library of stars, but works well on its own too given its relation to hope and insecurity The great bullfrog would fit the sun, but I feel like there is a better choice I am missing here hekea is definitely the world though if we give Eioghorain strength we can give Mirara the moon and Gramore the wheel of fortune to have the entire coven be represented I havent found a good fit for judgement yet though
Judgement could be: - the frozen courtyard - the caged children - the Mushroom Spirit
Are we going to talk about how Walton Goggins' The Ghoul from Fallout is just Brennan as The Man In Black without the effects? You all might be entitled to compensation!
Naram, Sir Curren, and the Man in Black walk into a bar…
Question: Brennan mentioned Irish/Celtic storytelling arcs and how different characters have different paths. If he has or can give a list of books that covers this, I would love to see it. I will take a scholarly article, website, anything really as that made my writerly mind perk up.
Morning coffee and Fireside, today’s gonna be great ☕️☺️
I’m only 20 minutes into the fireside but need to put this out there: Does anyone else think that Orima might have purposefully pointed Ursalon in the direction of calling upon Naram?? It feels like too much of a coincidence to me
Was there something somewhere about the MiB and a trail of rubies? Did Orima’s icon have ruby eyes? 👀
wizard witch and the wild one tarot WHEN? 👀
The Chariot Tarot could be the Epiphany
Will Gallows as the hanged man? More like the hung man, am I right horner corner?
*hunged
Up since 3am Brennan is just the Fox 🦊
Taylor, did NOT expect a Hair reference at the top of morn'
Good mornin starshine
A WWW Tarot set would be awesome!!
With whom out
A god showing up and poofing away a WAY strong enemy would be the DND highjonks of Fantasy High that would make us laugh, but with gentle care and stellar narration, plus horrifying sound work from our favorite Swifty, it is made terrifying
oh you’re telling me chapter 4 episode 51 we learn of wizard secret society? oh yeah? 4:51 we see Magical Government CIA? okay. i see
ahoo-HOOOOOOO
Crackle crackle!
3am pst today or yesterday? Either way, Brennan... pls use the sleep. And given that I can see on my widget it's 5am-ish in LA? Taylor, pls also use the sleep.
I have been summoned Edit: Brennan, please sleep sir 🙏🏽
Was about to joke hey what's with the intro Taylor until I realised I'd misread the intro as "minmaxing autism" and before I could put all my points into math
What is life but alternately minmaxing different aspects of ourselves?
With the delay of the previous episode, my brain went "Oh! The fireside chat is out early!" when I saw this pop up, lol.
Ahoo hoo crackle crackle
1:08 runtime 😮💨 also yay erika!!!
Ahoo hoo crackle crackle
ERIKAAAAA
Erika is back!
She is!
