[PUBLIC EPISODE] The Wizard, the Witch and the Wild One: ep045 "Nothing"
Across the night, with the dawn, this version of her, our gilled mage. Suvirin Kedberiket, amphibious and unalone. In the ice cave abattoir, our survivors, the otter and the otherworldly. The fresh hells of a secret past. And then, the trail, far beyond the broad road, taking them to whatever gifts the past has left. The task at hand. A good feeling. Dark river water. Bodies at the bottom murk, but above us: nothing. Exactly where we want to be.

Relistening to this episode and it still makes me have the widest range of emotions
"Take a lemon" is WILD 🍋
The score behind Eursulon's investigation of Keen's effects had such strong Myst/Riven soundtrack vibes. Pizzicato violin over cello gives me a Pavlovian urge to read a villain's diary.
Hey folks! Any updates on when a transcript might be ready? Or maybe I missed it?
But what about the cheese wheel our Honored Friend was supposed to deliver?!
The way I SCREAMED 🦈
Hang on, Keen had demons on him. Were they looted by Eurasalon along with everything else?
RIGHT as Suvi shattered her staff an Amber Alert came through my phone….I was out here thinking she broke magic somehow. CRAZY unintended bonus listening experience 😅
We know Brennan loves him a lore dump and don't think we missed that blood in the water comment - how do wizards and witches handle the monthly cycle??
As a fellow audio engineer, i wanted come in here and give props to the Taylor and the other audio cats for the excellent use of silence in this episode. No sound is such a powerful tool that we're often afraid to use when our job is to make the noises. Killer work!
Just got top surgery today!! Thank you guys for making something so AWESOME for me to listen to while I recover :) relistening from the top while I sleep and while sometimes hearing little fairies talk about their lack of a butthole is WILD work, it definitely is making my recovery more enjoyable! Keep making awesome creations 🤍
hey congrats! heal up and enjoy! :)
The destruction of the landscape in this episode was almost more devastating to me than experiencing Ame and Fox’s pain in the last episode… I have such deep dread at what Twelve Brooks has become, and the state of the children when they arrive. I don’t think anyone (maybe Eursulon) is prepared for understanding the consequences of what Silence did to the Great Bullfrog. Next episodes are going to be fucking rough. AND, beautifully executed because I’ve noticed as the environment becomes more of an essential part of this story, Taylor and Jared are immersing us more and more into some really gorgeous sound design. Every episode is art, y’all. In every aspect. Thank you.
Really well said!
For the fireside - Ame rolled a nat 1, what would’ve been heard with a nat20? Love the team. Great episode. Just so happy for vandal (I also gasped with Aabria when Ame cracked the book open!)
This arc is getting so juicy! Fireside question: Suvi seems to have quickly shifted her mindset about the citadel. How has she come to this, we all know there has been mounting evidence but she has not expressed this outwardly very much. Was she just full of snakes? <3 Sky
Suvi remains so interesting. SO many things had to happen for Suvi to desert - she had to be raised in a environment relatively insulated from the rigidity of a military power structure (a Citadel wizard even thinking about threatening imperial soldiers because her mom might get mad, much less getting away with it scot-free, seems like evidence of that), she was spoonfed evidence of Citadel involvement in trapping greater spirits, she needed emotional appeals from her only friends, her lover rejected her concerns outright, and her presumed archnemesis not only NOT kill her, he showed her An Uncle's Warmth™️. And even with all of that - if the New Suvi hadn't experienced betrayal and theft of agency at the hands of the Citadel and Old Suvi, if it weren't for that very personal betrayal, would she be able to shatter her staff and turn against the Citadel? I'm not going in on Suvi here - I'm not comfortable calling 'being indoctrinated' a character flaw in broad unqualified terms. Just - so many things had to happen in order for her to turn against the Citadel. Which, again, very interesting work. One also wonders how much relief Suvi feels at never hearing the phrase "I don't understand, you have all the resources of the Citadel at your disposal" from a lover again.
I wrote this whole long thing about growing up in north Jersey, going to college and living in Manhattan and my whole life being scored by that wonderful crush, the constant sound of existing shoulder to shoulder with people. Now the different but similarly comforting cacophony of living in Singapore and walking in the jungle/river/swamp reserve near my apartment filling that city kid void. It is choked with life and green and humidity so thick it coats you. Silence there would just be wrong it would fill me with something akin to dread. That feeling that nameless feeling that YOU GUYS PUT INTO WORDS FOR THIS BEAUTIFUL STORY!!!! MAN THE POWER OF SHARED HUMAN EXPERIENCE!!! I DON’T KNOW HOW TO EXPLAIN HOW MUCH I god this is so!!! Man oh man!! I guess just - Thank you
I hope this isn't strange to say, but re shared human experiences, we mirror each other! I'm from Singapore and now live in Manhattan, and your description of the green and humidity makes me miss it so much! I hope my weird little island is treating you well 💚
Question for Lou’s stand in: Why didn’t Eursalon lay on hands the foxes widdle iddy biddy paw better?
Question for Aabria: don't wizards, specifically knowing they're fighting shape changers who probably have enhanced olfactory senses, have anything for being "on the rag"? Or does Suvi just not subscribe to whatever that sort of anti-period solution is?
I'm freaking dying during the Fox and Bear taking about being stepped on and doing it 😂😂😂 ohhh my god
TAYLOR! See me in my office --- When Ame says "nothing" and we hear """"""nothing""""" for about three seconds - what are we REALLY hearing??? You nasty little man, I adore you & your rampant criminality!
fully bent over double laughing at “the don”
Taylor scream-laughing at 18.35 at "the Don!? Or the Meg? DAMN IT" is exactly I needed on my drive to work, gang. Jfc 😂
Keen's presence in this story has been: -ominous dandy introduction -botched kidnapping that quickly resulted in his death -a bunch of off-screen stuff Farewell, Harpsichord, we hardly knew ye 🫡
Question for Brennan: were the ink demons’ forms inspired by Morph from Treasure Planet? Because the description of Vandal’s rebirth made me think of Morph!
Lou's esteemed colleagues made a point of saying Eursalon didn't hug Ame back - why though? Was Eursalon keeping his hands free in case of more danger? Has he been in Situations himself and wanted to let Ame control how she was touched? Does he feel guilty that Ame was taken in the first place and he couldn't defend her? (not his fault obviously)
My empathy at being “the friend who picks my other friends up from jail” really kicked in at this part. Ame really fucked up, and then she subjected Fox to some bad shit. Sorry is fine, but acting in accordance needs to take place and we’ll just have to see if Ame can walk the walk. I think Eursulon is also getting the mission done, and is spending much of this mission thinking about how he’s different from his friends, and if they got his back the way they seem to assume he’s got theirs… I don’t blame him for being a little “professional” in that moment.
First thing I said out loud after seeing the episode title was oh no. Taylor, Jared and team, that sounds design was absolutely eerie and excellent plus Brennan's creepily haunting descriptions and the reactions from the PCs, captivating as always.
🍋
Jokes on you Taylor! You couldn't edit out the sound of my Tinnitus.
Is it bad that I kinda want the group to join in on the coven's war on the citadel? It feels crazy that we're finding out the citadel is doing all these things and even Suvi basically broke off from the citadel, for there to not at some point be a big formed alliance against the citadel. I guess it'll really depend on Ame's whole "bridge between spirit and human" ideal. Ame really gives me Avatar Aang vibes, where there's such a stubborn focus on peace and being a figure of peace, that they're unwilling to do the necessary things to keep everything functioning. I really wanna see Ame break more out of the mold of this big ideal of what the witch of the world's heart should be.
Holy heck the sound design in this one! That is exactly what it sounds like when you're hiding beneath an overturned boat in the water. I actually took an involuntary deep breath when Eursulon surfaced for the first time to look around. And then the pressing silence. The hollow, cloying silence behind their words and in between the dialogue. Damn. So good.
The Don
THE DON!!!!
I feel like this episode is the start a very confusing period where I am forever going to be offering my PCs lemons in every session.
We're not calling this "The Fanged and the Furious"? Ok
Can't believe we went from the hottest megalodon and a duck spy to the deep existential dread of silence. Just subbed to the patreon and am so happy to be here!!
Such an amazing story ❤️ I am so impressed by everyone’s character arc. I’m dreading the inevitable Suvi Steel confrontation because I don’t want to feel that many feelings guys come on please be cool
so Suvi is Bilbo Baggins... a group of 13 brought in a 14th, with a different skill set than the rest, that was needed to help with a mission they had been putting off but really wanted to attempt. congrats Aabria, you LOTR'ed it
🤣
The funeral rites for Keene made me laugh out loud so hard, it scared my partner.
In my head canon, the guy who turned into a duck was investigating, found the cheese shop, and the nice cheese shop lady gave him a snack.
Insane what silence can do for atmosphere when the rest of the sound design is so powerful.
“Gotta get that night beef”
The woman that took a treason charge to get laid is an absolute ICON
Love Taylor’s cackle at Aabria’s “The Don” whiff on “The Meg”
listening to the episode while drinking tea, half my cup ended up on my shirt when i decided to take a big drink during the "trading horses for a boat" scene erika youre so absolutely wonderful and hilarious, that nearly killed me
that “mischievous witch” leitmotif when ame scoops vandal tho
OH GOD, THE SOUND DESIGN! 😍 INSIDE THE BOAT!? COME ON, NOW!
I could feel the muddy river between my toes
Puns aside, is Suvi a hedge wizard now?
The joy I feel imagining the rage on her face at this suggestion is immense.
Was Eiogharan's "dream of the real world" a reference to Zhuang Zhou? (The Daoist monk that dreamt he was a butterfly, and when he awoken forgot whether he was a man dreaming of being a butterfly or a butterfly dreaming of being a man)
I was finding a lot of similarities to the Dreamtime of native Australians but they talk about similarities between native peoples cultures so I think a lot so I think it might be one of those.
Taylor hitting us with literal silence???? It felt as if i was there, as if the wizard silence had casted his spell just a few meters down the stream The sound design is truly so impactful Amazing episode once again, roleplay wise, story wise, everything really I can't wait for everyone to meet and greet next week TvT
The word "silence" has taken on such a sinister quality to me now any time it is said
Let’s go, duck 😌
mother fuckers you cannot end there what the hell don’t do this to us.
“Gilled mage” made me facepalm so hard and 20 minutes later Suvi had me crying on my commute to work, this show really has it all
I love release days (over her by the fireside) <3
Today I learned that an imaginary fox has made love. good for him
I love how Brennan and Lou made their Horner Corner bafflement canon
Incredible job by Taylor and his team. When I listened and closed my eyes, I could almost feel the different places around me when the environment changed. The water to boat was incredible!
My Tuesday morning ritual is my favorite of the week: wake up, hydrate, coffee, house chores w/ WBN. The under water distorted audio was so on point. I listen to this in my headphones pretty much exclusively to pick up on all the juicy details I might miss other wise. Taylor’s consideration for atmosphere, ambiance, texture, and pressure really contributes to how immersive this story is. The players hit you in the feels with their incredible dedication to their characters and the trials they are put through, and Taylor and team really drive the sensory elements home. Thank you so much everyone for bringing so much to this story. (Suvi. Suvi!!!!! 🫂)
How can every episode be so good????? Things are about to go down and I'm very excited for what comes next Also the act of rebellion from Suvy this episode is top notch character development
I'm only 30 minutes in, but I think there was a missed opportunity here with Lay on Hams in the butcher shop 🤣
Omg you’re absolutely right 😆
"turn away for the broad road"
I’ve been waiting for Eioghorain to meet Eursulon and Ame and now I have to wait longer! Why?! 😭 Such a great episode!
My exact feeling after watching this episode
I'm adopting "may you dream of lewd sheep" to replace "sweet dreams." Thank you, Erika.
I look forward to the forthcoming Do Ink Demons Dream of Lewd Sheep.
My heart is breaking for Suvi. Deconstruction is so difficult. Ame and Eursalon getting the hell out of dodge was so cool. Cunning 🦊
Y'all out here making Monday feel like Friday.
This is exactly what I wanted for my birthday! How did they know?
Happy Birthday 🥳🎂
the casablanca of it all
Literally sprang from my bed saying "You [redacted] the [redacted] on the [redacted]?!?!" Quiddie's character may only be Princess of the Wizard Nerds, but she herself is the Wizard Queen of Storytelling
Truly love every new episode. I gotta check in though, since they are going up to twelve brooks, and I'm assuming the river they are traveling up starts in twelve brooks, then wouldn't they actually be traveling upstream or against the current? And seeing an upside-down boad floating upstream would look a bit weird. Or am I understanding this wrong?
There is a bonus one shot that takes place in twelve brooks. At the start of that episode they describe the geography of Twelve Brookes pretty thoroughly. From what I remember the river branches a bunch and cascades over many waterfalls which feed a large lake. The town is built on a bit of a rocky incline in-between all the falls and tributaries. There are many foot bridges that connect the town together. The castle was not described but it is at a high point overlooking the town but is mostly in disuse. So as described traveling down stream to twelve brooks makes sense. Aswell, in the Twelve brooks episode it was hammered home that this town is incredibly beautiful, charming and an artsy tourist destination.
I absolutely LOVED the moment with Ame and Vandal. What an awesome bit of storytelling for him to recharge/heal that way.
The gang!!! They're back together!!!!! The silence in this was truly unnerving. I kept turning up the volume in my headphones like I was missing something.
Taylor’s sound design is out of this WORLD!!! The actual *silence* was palpable, the sounds when they’re in the canoe… GOSH!!! Taylor the MVP of WBN forever
Omg that silence was truly deafening Taylor has done it again at one point i thought did pause the ep wtf 🤣💯
I love how when Brennan was describing the absence of noises we took for granted, the complete silence that was present made it so clear how much ambience Taylor puts into the episodes. It’s only something u fully notice when it’s gone!
Truly, I never noticed just how ever-present and supportive the sounds and musical effects were in these episodes until they were gone--as Erika described it: it felt like mounting pressure on my ears
I cant believe we got horner corner in the main show
🍋
GILLED MAGE?! TAYLOR YOU ARE TOO CLEVER!
Definitely did not have *that* fight between the Fox and Eursulon on my bingo card for the episode.
I need you to know i read this in the first 5 mins of the podcast and spent the rest of the episode anxious that the Fox and Eursulon got in a fight 😂😂😂😂
😭😭😭😭 silvering!
This is the first episode I get to watch as it comes out and I’m so excited
"He's The Don!?" *Taylor Cackles*
Got ‘um
Looking forward to seeing what foxholes we dive down. Both for our characters and my emotions. Ahoo hoo crackle crackle and im sure some tasty Bone Cone will be inbound as well!😁🤠🤯😎😱👻🖖🍉🍳🫖☕️🍷
i need to re-listen to the spell book behind the scenes but what happened to Suvi’s spellbook? did it also get wet/would get wet again on this mission?
yeah but Prestidigitation and Mending allow for any of her belongings to be fixed/dried after being dunked in several rivers
Released just before a lunchtime walk on a sunny day. Tuesday is coming together nicely.
Incredibly ominous title gang!! This gonna be good 😏
I'm sooooooooooooooooo not ready
15min in, i was not ready
