Summoning the Citadel: A Special World-Building Fireside Chat

Since Brennan was away becoming a baby daddy during much of Chapter 2 and the citadel arc was chock full of extremely fun building-of-da-world, we thought it would be fun to have a whole SPECIAL EPISODE dedicated to the world building of The Wizard the Witch and the Wild One. I am already so sick of typing "world building." From now on I will call it... Debbie. So here the gang has gathered to answer all your Debbie questions!  But BE NOT AFRAID, it's not JUST a behind the scenes Debbie talk. We go SO FAR past Debbie. We drop some MAJOR lore. Major. Lore.

Debbie.  Turns out it's fun to type Debbie. Debbie. Debbie. Debbie. Let's get some Debbies going in the chat, fam!

I finished the entire first book before getting the fireside’s and now I’m just listening to them through and it’s a good way to reflect. That being said—based on what I know of what’s to come—this episode would have made the end of book one destroy me. I’d need a full week to recover. Thanks guys. (But, know I love it, you’re doing a good job, and I can’t believe how long Lou can do a bit. That’s been a fun discovery from a side joke from Brennan on Dropout to seeing the reality on this here)

Interesting how the requirements for making a Tamori (the spell needs to have been cast many, many times; enough to be streamlined) runs counter to the Axiom of Proliferation which says that spells are more powerful when they're closely guarded. We knew that axiom is a crime against magic and this evidence strongly supports that I think. Tamori are clearly much more powerful than their base forms.

I'd go with the Wizard Sunder to rend these systems of domination, Wizard Stroke bc you never know if it'll be a gentle caress or a death blow, and finally Wizard Song because I love making music, and I remember the way The Rain Road frightened the wizards of the Empire, completely beyond their control.

The money I'd pay to buy books by you, Brennan... or buy books from someone who helped you translate your stories oral narration to written narrative if you'd prefer, is absurd. Like, I'm in AU. The conversion rate has been sh!t since we left parity about 15 years ago. I'd still pay.

Slowly catching up on all the episodes I couldn’t listen to before and Brennan describing the whole tower debacle, how do you structure the civilization within it and it really made me think of the game the Chants of Sennar, how to make a tower with isolated floors but also allow for that connection. S
Sean Boyce · April 3, 2024

I think Witches fill that role in their world. The Covens are very similar in scope to Domains, but spirits in their world don't require or have interest in organized worship. I think Clerics just sort of inherently imply a kind of ecclesiarchy or hierarchy that doesn't make sense with the spiritual nature of their cosmos. How could you be a follower of the Great Bear? Does he have shrines? Can he speak to you through them? Do you serve him when he does so? Could he even? I'm sure there are spirits which accept worship. I'm sure Rhuuv is in touch with several. But organized worship is religion, and Omura has stayed wisely away from that. Plus, mechanically, witches do all the basic cleric stuff. We know there are paladins, because Eursulon, but maybe also there aren't if he's the only one. Maybe there were, once upon a time, but such practices are not taken up anymore. Or maybe all the Paladins in the world serve the Dominion of Rhuuv. It would sort of make sense - an Oath and a Pact are both promises, they jut have different stakes and costs.

I’ve been thinking I’d be the Wizard Scrimshaw, but given what Brennan says here about namecloaks being as broad as possible that may be too specific.

S
Sean Boyce · April 3, 2024

Their breadth or depth has more to do with intent, I think. Scrimshaw suggests cutting on bone, which could mean direct and to the point or could hint to something necromantic or it could simply refer to artistry of a specific kind (but no specific form). It's a fine namecloak, I think. It's not as versatile as Steel or Stone, but your interests and nature may not lead you to versatility.

It is so funny that, as soon as this series was announced, my husband called his shot that he wanted to play a male witch. he wanted the character to have the same energy as a stereotypical male nurse, who always gets asked twice whether it really is their job, since it’s such a female dominated environment lol

M
Meonlights · March 20, 2024

I actully do have a male witch player character, and just like me, he grew up being taught everything by about 5-10 incredibly talented and knowledgable women. Plus he dresses like a traditional witch with skirts, aprons and a big hat. If anyone asks, he is usually confused, because to him that is just the uniform lol. (Also idk if The Wizard Scatter is a good name, but thanks to my ADHD I love jumping from one hobby to the next constantly. Being a jack of all trades is my life goal, but that doesn't start with an S, so I gotta improvise.

So it's really fascinating to me that clerics are not a part of the world of umora. What was the reason behind that decision? Did it have more to do with the class or did it have something to do with the way spirits/divinity are portrayed?

Loved every minute of this, and don’t regret having delayed sleeping to listen to it. Not least because I fell asleep truly down the brain rabbit hole of thinking of good ‘S’ names for wizards, and trying to find one for me, which was very enjoyable to drift off thinking about. Still not totally clear on the ‘S’ situ though. I get the world-build, above-game end of why ‘S’ that was given but still slightly unsure on the in-game, lore reason? There was a lot of explanation of the name-cloak/‘of the citadel’ stage as being akin to grad school but I wasn’t certain if you meant the ‘S’ names are specifically related to that, a distinctive, recognisable, public marker of qualification, similar to introducing someone as ‘Dr __ PhD’ or ‘MA’ etc.? Or if it’s more status-y than that, like writing your qualification(s) AND ‘1st Class Hons,’ or, US is ‘Summa Cum Laude’ I think? Or if the discussion of that sort of academia-like side of wizardry was completely separate from the lore-reasoning of ‘S’ - such as ‘S’ being regarded as having some magical or runic property? Sorry. Probably being slightly obtuse on this one. Sould happily listen to y’all talk about the intricacies of Umora all day. WWW feels like a delicious fantasy novel/book series, where the adventure is brilliant & addictive but the world is so beautifully crafted & considered that you find yourself wanting to consider the tiniest details in detail 🤩🤓🤩 Thank you all for the work you put into creating & producing this incredible story, so excited for chapter 3!

James Bixler · March 20, 2024

Damn it you all! Why are you so amazing? Prepare for ramble. Even in a talk back you make my brain synch up with this crazy modern art you call Worlds Beyond Number. Someday I will finish my essay on why what you are doing is a model for how to step away from the follies of the modern digital age and take the first steps toward actual integration that makes better sense for humans. I digress. I have an idea to base a game on, set in Umora OR the character I want to see someone play or an NPC I would love Brennan create in Umora. Yes, I am aware that it is very likely that this idea in part comes from a deep place inside me that instantaneously rebels when authority tells me no. Character Concept The Pilgram Righteous: Formerly the Wizard Sacred Class: Cleric or maybe Druid? Character pitch: A character who idolized the writings of wizards who wrote about magic with inferences that it is itself somehow a force that is personified. Chief among them are some of the writings of the Wizard Stone who advocated that a wizard can be guilty of treason against magic. Righteous has found a way to tap into magic through shifting away from formula into ritual, from study into contemplation and moving from theory into doctrine. Or they have found that when they delved deep into forming a schema around the various writings that from wizards that have in some way personified magic, they have tapped into magic in a way that does not require dedication to an arduous empirical approach to wielding magic. Instead, it the Wizard Sacred found they could leverage understanding based in hermeneutics and social constructivism. They have shed the limits of their cognition and embraced the vast sacred awareness that is magic. They have shed the cloak and let magic bestow on them a Pilgrams garb and embraced a call to become Righteous. Do they believe magic has become so common and present in Umora that it has developed a vast and divine volition and they can hear its whispers on the magical winds? Or maybe they have found a key to understanding the collective unconscious of the wizards of Umora? Lots of ways to go with that. A good potential Villain? Antihero? Visionary Savant? Naive Idealist? Enlightened Paragon? Is their story a Coming of Age? Slide into Madness? Coping with the guilt of with what they have wrought and what others begin to do with it? A quest for making meaning that transcends the mortal coil? A search to find peace after being shaken to their core by their new understanding? More than one of these? Would their story end when their radical ideas are snuffed out before they can catch fire? Would they be the first, last and only of their kind? Would they start something that becomes beautiful and profound beyond them or something terrible that will soak the world they love in blood? Do they threaten the force of magic itself or help others understand it in a way that gathers its followers into enlightenment beyond? I think this would just be pure fun. I have some guesses, purely guesses, about the aversion to the cleric class in the world of Umora. I can make sense of that in my head. But damn my deep seeded contrary subconscious and its dislike of simple no answers just went straight to finding something interesting to do with quick no. As soon as Brennan said no to clerics in Umora my stupid brain went right to Stone accusing a teacher of treason against magic. Then I thought of the Rain Road and how, Galani could use the machinery of empire to ritualize and codify the song so it could be controlled and how there is an almost religious overtone to the control of Empire. Then the idea came for The Pilgrim Righteous, the worlds first cleric (Or fine, Druid if you are all going to be picky for your “reasons” that I am pretty sure are well thought out and fundamentally congruent to this deeply personal thing you are building. I think I could make Druid work. It will definitely need some thematic revision to make it more world soul themed but I think its pretty cool. My inner rebel likes cleric more though. Also I think cleric has the potential for more grist for the character growth by consequence dynamic. But FINE Druid if it absolutely needs to be). Thank you for giving my stupid ADHD brain space to play and frolic with a wild abandon in our world that does not normally have space for it. You all are giving me such a profound gift and I can’t thank you enough for that!

S
Sean Boyce · April 3, 2024

You can also kinda see that Witches serve the function of Clerics societally and mechanically. They can heal, communicate with the world beyond, they understand customs and procedures for caretaking shrines to spirits. They have ritual and tradition, they even kinda have domains in the way the covens are structured. It's just like...what would be the point of a cleric except to explicitly introduce organized worship into a setting that intentionally eschews it? Umora takes a lot of its spiritual queues from Eastern cultures (not enough knowledge to say which) and I think, to some significant extent, stays away from traditional European Divinity because it's not a particularly eastern concept. There's a lot less "rule over" and much more "influence upon" from spirits. Traditional European concepts of religion and Divinity on which the Cleric is built require a heirarchy of sorts, systems and taxonomy that contains and defines ideas. Yes, you could have a cleric devoted to a concept. But at that point, aren't we just talking a witch with different, less setting specific features?

Two comments, one earnest and one pithy; Re: the origin of witches, the way y'all describe it, it sounds like a child needs to have the right nose for "spirit stuff", but maybe it helps to have proximity to the places where it's leaking through more consistently to realize that there's more to it. I'm reminded of the ancient lore and religion of A&E network television's ghost hunters, where it's said that many children are more attuned to noticing spirits, but "common sense" and looming adulthood drives it out of most during adolescence. The other comparison that came to mind was the idea that someone could have all the natural gifts in the world to be the greatest hockey player of all time, but if they had never seen ice or skates or had people around them who knew about hockey they wouldn't be a hockey star. Nature + Nurture and all that, need to train the spirit sensitivity through exposure even if the nose hole might be more or less open from kid-days. 2. Brennan sure has a lot of confidence that people wouldn't call themselves smart for someone who apparently has watched survivor (if dropout-game changer is to be believed), since every single damn season on that show without fail some insufferable douchbag will say "they're out to get me because I'm just too smart".

C
Cecilia Ruigrok · March 20, 2024

Makes total sense but I hadn’t put together that there are no Gods/no Clerics and mostly humans in this world! I’m putting together a campaign in a setting like that and was starting to doubt myself and wonder if it could still be a compelling (and D&D mechanically functional) setting without those!! Thank you for the best proof I could possibly have that following a creative vision that’s counter to the norm is totally worth it. Umora is one of the most immersive and beautiful worlds I have ever had the pleasure to experience and I can’t wait for the next arc ❤️

W

Can anyone be taught to have the spirit awareness that witches have?

r

That's what I'm wondering! I sent in a question about whether new witches or witch stations could be created, so I hope it comes up in a future talkback or campaign episode sometime soon!

Wizard names I would like to have if Soft was not available The Wizard Sleepy or Sleep (barely employed in the cidadel) The Wizard Sweet ( I like to think I'm a sweet guy) The Wizard Stasis (sounds cool, I get to stop time when stressed out) The Wizard Silly (just a silly little guy) The Wizard Sarcasm (self explanatory)

The bit about abjurers translating their namecloak into a dead language for some added security... hell yes on two counts: 1.) fun idea. 2.) I like to get lost in the sauce when I'm worldbuilding, too

L
Leah S. · March 19, 2024

Why are there no Clerics!?

J
Jack Jones · March 19, 2024

Most likely because there is no Capital G Gods, just powerful spirits which if anything would act as patrons or the source of a magical bloodlines

J
Josh Neff · March 19, 2024

My best friend from high school and I use the same voice Brennan ends with for our "ubernerd talking about TTRPGs" bits (she doesn't play RPGs, so it's kind of a playful teasing of me/me laughing at myself), and I honestly thought that was unique to us, so of course I lost it hearing Brennan do it.

G
Gearoid Cotter · March 19, 2024

Question for Brennan and Erika, When ye both talk about witches in this world I’m getting some Terry Pratchett “Discworld” vibes. Were Sir Terry’s Lancre witches an inspiration for any of the Grandmother Wren / Witch Class lore, or was it just a happy coincidence? If not, I cannot recommend those books strongly enough! #gnuterrypratchett

O
Osiris Nightwood · March 19, 2024

Are Arcane Tricksters considered wizards? Or are their a bunch of thieves out there who stole magic for themselves?

J

E
Emily C · March 19, 2024

Ok I am less versed in DnD lore but I don't actually... understand what an abjurer is? Like admin wizard? Protector wizard? Lawyer wizard? Anyway I love world building talk and I'm looking forward to Brennan's sci-fi series of books whenever he gets around to it (this is a joke friends but I hope he actually does do this). Also also, wizards heavily neurodiverse/stereotypical engineer coded? Rules rules rules for everyone and everything, that's how the world works right???

J
Jack Jones · March 19, 2024

To Abjure means to renounce a belief or claim so essentially to codify it into dnd terms they are NUH UH NO YOU DIDNT Wizards

M
Micah · March 19, 2024

I really appreciated the talk about non-fem witches. I had a character I crafted a long time ago that I just had to settle for making a druid because that was as close to the concept that I could get to at the time. As soon as WWW came out and I started hearing about your witch class and the foundations of it I knew it was EXACTLY what I had been wanting for Kova. I did feel a little unsure about using the witch class for him though if there were imporantant foundational reasons for only women being able to be witches because I didn't want to erase that even if I'm just playing him in a home game some day. I appreciate the discussion on it and am excited to someday play my sleepy witch boy ♡

M
Micah · September 15, 2026

Returning to this comment 2 1/2 years later to say that I've been very happily playing this sleepy plant witch for a long time now and it's everything I could've wanted from a class, he's become one of my all-time favorite characters 🌿

B
Blue Jones · March 19, 2024

I like the idea of The Wizard Smart not being some genius type but being someone very PRACTICAL to subvert expectation. The wizard Smart could be like a level 3 or 4 wizard, who really just uses a small pool of spells very effectively. Mostly using cantrips in very perceptive and apt methods to simplify their issues. Smart like a shop teacher or artificer, not 'smart' like a hard-core booknerd. Smart like sharp ig.

what do we think about Sh words as namecloaks? Is it the letter or the sound that counts?

r
rocket-flash · March 20, 2024

Given everything they said it seems like just the letter is the crux of it although given how meticulous wizards are with their names it would be cool if an SH or ST name had a significant meaning in world like non-s names!

J
Jennifer Sieben · March 19, 2024

So fascinating to hear the surprise that the others had about the citadel not originally being in a desert. I had assumed that the wizards had caused the desert was something that was obvious, but I guess I was just picking up on some vibe Brennan was subtly laying down. (I've incorporated a similar idea into my campaign, so that might help.)

Erasing non-binary and two spirit people from history of “witches” is WILD. Navigating both feminine and masculine aspects of the human experience has always been a transgressive and mystical act that is both revered and/or feared across cultures. Shout out to all the nonbinary Caribbean practitioners of Obeah, Santeria, and Hoodoo keeping our spiritual traditions alive.

I think it’d be really interesting now that we know there are half-spirit half-human people in the world that we get like not-quite Tieflings, Dragonborn, etc. but they’re very secretive and hidden and have glamours and I think it’d be neat to be like “Yeah your friend Rob has secretly actually been a literal troll this whole time.” Like in Halloweentown 3 because for some reason that’s become my point of reference lol

V
Vivid Weasel · March 19, 2024

In the real actual world there was a lot of slavery that the Romans did, which moved a lot of ethnic groups around Europe, and then later the pan-atlantic slave trade happened which did a lot of ethnic diversity. I'm much more comfortable with the fictional sub-in of teleportation to move ethnic groups around to match real-world ethnic diversity

Wait,,, NO clerics?? Just none ??? I have so many more questions. I know in other media Brennan's talked about how warlocks and clerics are basically reskins of the same basic relationship, but if you were gonna pick between having warlocks or having clerics, WHY pick warlocks 😭 /j. Now that I'm thinking about it... I've heard *nothing* about gods or organised religion, certainly not in the abrahamic sense, so are *all* greater magical beings spirits? Do warlocks make their pacts with spirits, or with nastier beings from further afield? I just think Suvi meeting a 20th level Arcana Cleric would be a lot of fun 😌

J

E
Embroidery Bonanza · March 19, 2024

Now you’ve all got me thinking about what the MisMag characters’ name cloaks would be! I think that Sam would be the Wizard Spark because she is radiant (obviously) and sparks a desire for change in others. I see K as the Wizard Synthesis or Symbiosis to represent the joining of their innate femininity and their love for darkness and chaos. Evan is tough. At first I considered the Wizard Strife because of the hardship he has endured, but I would hope that that doesn’t define him. I feel like an accurate name cloak would reflect his relationship with his power. For example, the Wizard Snare could represent how he used his wit and endurance to trap the darkness within and bend it to his will. And Jammer, of course, would be the Wizard Scuppers. Or if I’m being serious, perhaps the Wizard Suture because he creates connections and provides aid to people who have been hurt by life.

A
Abigail M · March 19, 2024

I suggest that Evan could be the Wizard Service for how much he cares about acts of love and duty to his friends
