Do AIs have built in AIM Messenger? Have we seen this before?
Yes. I think the earliest thing is 234. with Pintsize and some other robot, whom Pintsize tought to be female. Then sometimes robots IRC'd, Pintsize, Momo, PT410X, maybe Winslow too.

Yes, it means that they're cluttering up their internal communications with endless series of emojis masquerading as '1337 code'.

They both seem to have updated emojis as they updated/changed chassis. Much like one would update a profile picture, I suppose.

Its official amongst all the variations of relationships in this strip we also have the one that's so awkward it takes the processing time of not one but two AI's to keep it going :P
Fun fact: the reason humans are so smart is that we were pushed by evolutionary pressure to get good at modeling each others' mental states and understanding the state of the social whole. The ability to think together is our evolutionary superpower. So the idea that AIs would do this kind of modeling actually makes sense—it may be what woke them up.
They can talk behind our backs! Robot apocalypse imminent.
OH MY GOD THEY CAN TEXT IN THEIR HEADS?! THAT MAKES TOTAL SENSE AND I'M SO JEALOUS!
Yeah, but it takes away the option of throwing a phone out the window in frustration. Though granted, that's no longer a non-costly option for me after I retired my faithful Nokia 1100 for a smartphone.

They ARE in contact. I assume "Romba" is some sort of robot slur.
'Roomba' is a brand of autonomous robot vacuum cleaner; it's got only the simplest pseudo-AI control software. Basically, May found an elaborate way to call Momo stupid.

Pretty sure it is just texting, they just don't need a touchscreen because they are the phone. Pint-size took dictation before.
