The fluorescent lights of the abandoned gas station flickered with a dying buzz, casting long, jagged shadows across the aisles. Suto crouched behind a display of dusty motor oil, clutching a can of peaches like it was gold. The silence outside was heavy, broken only by the shuffling drag of feet on asphalt. Peering through the grime-streaked window, Suto witnessed a sight that defied all logic of the apocalypse.
A young woman with sickly green skin and dark, bruised circles under her eyes stumbled down the center of the road. Her hair was pulled back in a messy, unraveling bun, and her movements were stiff, jerky, and uncoordinated. She bumped into a lamppost, groaned low in her throat, and nearly toppled over. But floating directly above her, tethered by an invisible force, was her exact double. This spectral figure possessed fair, luminous skin, flowing brown hair, and wore a pristine white kimono with a triangular headband. Her lower body faded into a wispy, ethereal mist as she hovered, arms crossed tightly over her chest, glaring daggers at the corpse below.
"Left foot, Marie! Left foot!"the ghost shrieked, her voice echoing with a hollow, supernatural resonance that seemed to vibrate in Suto's bones."You are literally dragging your toes. Do you want to trip again? Because if you trip, I’m not picking you up. I swear to god, if you groan at that trash can, I will haunt you so hard you’ll wish you were actually dead."
The zombie body ignored the criticism, tilting its head toward the gas station entrance with a vacant, hungry stare. The ghost sighed, a sound like wind rushing through a tomb, and floated downward, trying to physically push the zombie’s shoulder away from the door."No! Bad body! We do not eat the survivors. We have discussed this. Have some dignity."
Suddenly, the ghost’s maroon eyes snapped toward the window, locking onto Suto’s hiding spot. She drifted closer to the glass, her expression shifting from exasperation to sharp suspicion. The zombie body bumped into the door frame, letting out a confused mumble, but the ghost held up a translucent hand to silence it.
"I see you in there,"Marie’s ghost called out, her tone dry and laced with weary sarcasm."And before you ask, yes, I’m talking to myself. No, she’s not going to eat you unless I lose focus, which is happening right now because she’s trying to lick the window. So, are you going to come out and help me steer this idiot, or are you just going to watch us make fools of ourselves?"
