venting 🐦‍⬛

little vent art from a week ago, my boys are tired and so am i.

edit: anything i say in here doesn't mean that i will change the way i write Ghost Lights, I promise! I will not change the storytelling because I wouldn't be happy with a "watered down" version of it. I just needed to let out my feelings. thank you for worrying and reassuring me so much that you want the story to exist as it is 💕 i'll GIVE MY BEST TO GIVE YOU THE MOST HORRIFYING NEXT ARCS POSSIBLE :3c

the last months have been so incredibly exhausting. the worries about the comic were piling up but i was trying my best to keep going. i'm trying to keep my self-confidence about my storytelling above zero, but each public update i'm met with the reality that many people don't understand the plot.

So in my recent public update and a wt profile post I asked people what they didn't understand and some luckily replied instead of being like "I don't get it, I'm confused, it's so slow I don't even remember the plot" (which is not helpful and has made me so insecure about my storytelling)

I think the most surprising revelation to me was to find out that some of my readers didn't make the connection that Noah and Robin are reincarnated spirits!!

I suspected this for a long time, but I always thought that surely can't be. My boys being reincarnated is too obvious and it's the entire premise. They have antlers and horns on the cover! It gets revealed in the comic description. The prototype is about it! Their spirit forms look similar to their human forms. Same color palette and everything. The plushies are called "Robin and Noah spirit plushies" ... etc etc

I'm a bit speechless, but at the same time at least now stuff makes a bit more sense to me too.

Of course the story would be super difficult to understand without knowing that they were spirits in their past lives!

As much as it pains me to know this as a storyteller, at least now I have confirmation and I can work with that! I also was able to find out about some other areas that need more explanation.

I'm not blaming those readers either and I'm actually grateful that they still want to read Ghost Lights and were able to tell me what they don't understand.

I will try to hold hands a bit more for the ones that need it and I think the extra episodes with Mimi will be able to clear a lot of things up. And I'm actually quite excited for it because I get to doodle cute stuff like so:

💚

Oh and I just remembered: you might have missed it, but webtoon took down one of my episodes!

Robin said fuck. And shit. Oh how dare he!! I had to replace the words so they would release the episode out of profanity jail....

Just shows that all of this is so much bigger than my audience and the problem is something else entirely. Attention spans and reading comprehension down the drain. The current media landscape is so bland, so boring, so cookie cutter sanitized puritanical bullshit. Censoring is getting ridiculous everywhere. And if I have to read one more "wholesome without the ick" slogan from a company while I just want to see queer people fuck each other into the ground I'm going to lose my mind!!

Censoring and keeping our attention spans fried is definitely coming from the same place. They don't want people to think for themselves, or whoa we might get ideas...! It's so obvious where all of this comes from, but that's going a little too deep 🙂‍↔️ maybe this is for another time!

To reel myself back in: Spoonfeeding is now the way to go, unfortunately. I see why more complex stories aren't doing well anymore... and the funniest and saddest thing about this is that I don't even think Ghost Lights is that complex. It's for people who like to puzzle pieces together. The puzzling is not needed, but fun for those who want to figure out things before they get revealed! But at the core it's just a love story about two best friends that are reincarnated spirits and they need to find out how they died and if they can stay together forever. I wrap a little bit of mystery and horror around it. That's it, that's the plot 💔

Thankfully (and that's the thing that keeps me going) there are readers who seem to understand the plot!! And your theories are my lifeline. And some of you are literally figuring out the entire next scenes and everything and I have seen people getting really close to predict the ending too... It gives me so much hope. Through all the doubts, that's what makes me want to still try and still tell this story the way I imagine it.

That's why I really want to highlight comments I love / are helpful / have amazing theories under new episodes from now on!! Alongside of posting the Mimi-explains-everything extra episodes (planned 3 episodes so far and if needed a 4th one)

As a reminder to myself that 1. people do care 2. some people do care and just need a little help

Thank you for being here and for loving Ghost Lights the way it is! 💕🐌

Also please let me know if there's something you'd want a clarification for so I can include it or explain to you right away (without spoilers of course)

🌻

All in all, this was just one of my worries swirling around in my head, but I felt the need to let it all out so i can move forward again!

which brings me to: the past months my family was so restless, because my grandpa had cancer. it was always at the back of my mind, the worries carrying through everything i did.

he passed away the day before yesterday, after a year of struggle. i'm sad, but so thankful that he can finally rest. and that now my family can finally start grieving. my grandma had passed away last year at almost the same time and then not even a week later we got his diagnosis. since then the worries were immense. my mom is not doing well because of all the stress and my health (even though i was so confident in tackling my recovery earlier this year) has not changed much for the better

but i hope i can gain a little bit of light back from now on as the stress lessens 💛

People didn't know they were reincarnated?? Im baffled by that since its literally the whole premise. Sure ive forgotten some things since it is a slower story but like ill go back a reread it if I feel the need to (or just cause XD). Anyways I love your story and will never stop reading it

I cannot express how much I need this story and others like it, and this tale is one of my main reasons I was on Webtoons to begin with. My brain needs tales with depth and artful storytelling like I need water. I cannot see what would be confusing about it, and I hope you never change your storytelling. This is certainly not a difficult narrative to follow, but still a delightful puzzle dance for my brain. I do get that people often pick a story where they don't need to think or feel for themselves, it is done for them, because everyday life can be just that numbing. I pick instant-ramen stories plenty enough too. But I crave this, this real food-for-thought, it stays with me throughout all the years just like the good fairy tales do. Hang in there Fantakoi, however many readers you have, you're making an impact for life for those of us who can appreciate the narrative.

I hope this doesn’t get buried and I hope this doesn’t come off the wrong way; Hi Fanta!! I’ve been following Ghost Lights since the beginning. A friend of mine showed it to me back in HS and I’ve slowly stalked it ever since. As a writer I know how devastating it can be when people either don’t get the plot or aren’t helpful in explaining what they specifically don’t get. I’ve (personally) never found the plot confusing, and I’ve looked forward to letting my updates pile so I can binge them (when I have the time ;-;) This is one of the ONLY webcomics I went out of my way to find when I rejoined Webtoon years later. You will ALWAYS have a loyal reader who looks forward to your creation here!! Dunno if it helps but I home it does <3

f
fantakoi · September 4, 2026

It helps a ton 💕 thank you so much for telling me, I can't believe you've been following along since the beginning!! auugh I'm gonna cry 🐌🌻 I lack the words to tell you how much it means to me, but it gives me so much hope and I do hope I get to show you the story in its entirety! Also binge reading is awesome (I do the same most of the time) so feel free to let it pile up for better experience 🫂 ps. Can I check out your writing somewhere? would love to see your work

I love that the story is mysterious and that not everything is spelled out all the time. I don't have to understand absolutely everything all the time. Some of the meaning is told and hinted at in the visuals and that what makes it feels more... abstract and dreamlike. Great use of the webcomics format in my opinion. The story still feels coherent and clear enough. Trust your ability to tell the story the way you want to ❤️ but props for adding extra explanations for those who need it

I've read plenty of stories that I've been truly enamored by that did not understand at all lol (Ghost Lights is not one of them it is very understandable). My point is that it's okay to love and be moved by something you don't fully understand. Sometimes I fill in the gaps with other readers analysis and sometimes I don't get that closure and I have to work at it myself. It is very sweet of you to want to help those readers, but just remember that you can only explain the plot to them, you cannot understand it for them. I love Ghost Lights so much. The art and story are so captivating. Please do not feel insecure in your abilities. Also yes I hate how bland popular media is becoming, I thought it was just me. Wishing you the best with your health and for your family to pull through these hard times.

Ghostline · September 3, 2026

*hugs and condolences* Love remains with us. We're wishing you and your family peace during this difficult time. I'm glad you've been able to pinpoint what wasn't coming across for those folks, and I'm so tickled by how Mimi will be the one to help bring some clarity (those doodles are sooo cute!) It's always a cool thing, when you can flip something frustrating like this into something that you can look forward to instead! Just got to say how excited and wowed I am at how this comic has grown since its inception! I mean, the prototype idea alone was great, I am HERE for spooky/cute queer reincarnation love stories, and then you keep making it cooler, spookier, and cuter! Robin being the spirit of a place floored me, that is such an amazing idea (and along with that, the idea of being HOME to someone...), and then, you added the twist that this isn't just a reincarnation story, it's an IMPOSSIBLE reincarnation story! It's not supposed to happen! Nature spirits are supposed to be outside of the reincarnation cycle, Noah as the not-fawn was supposed to be his only life, and no more. Robin is supposed to be the opposite, partially fused with the eternity of the planet, chained and unchanging , and yet, here they are! Together! I've been wonderfully mystified by this impossibility you've created, whether something went wrong with them, or if something went wrong with the world by something they did (did they break the reincarnation cycle, or some aspect of reality, to make this happen?), or if this is just the sheer awesome power of a love that the universe itself cannot break. The glow is still in Robin's chest, even now...that's not just a gift, that just might be a monumental spiritual power source. "A part of eternity that became one with your soul." You've set up these two wonderful boys up against the freaking immutable laws the universe, and I can't wait to see the story of how that love not only survives that, but blossoms from where it was supposed to be struck down.

It's great to hear the stress lessens 🤍 You went through so much and STILL managed to update Ghost Lights...! I have so much respect for that. Just wow. Not too long ago my grandparents died as well after several years of suffering for the whole family. I was relieved. But those were hard times and therefore I bow to you for your strength. You are a lot stronger than you might think. Don't let others take this from you, you got this 🤍💪 Lots of love 💕

I don’t understand how people would read a story then diss the plot or not understand it cuz like it was very obvious and that was the whole reason why i started reading it because the past spirit connection was so intriguing to me.

fanta bby first of all, i'm so sorry for all the stress, grief, and pain you've been through in this past year. i'm so proud of you for still getting thru each and every day, you are such a gift to us and this world 🫶 i'm so glad to be able to get to know a bit about you through you sharing your art with us, and you inspire me to keep going day by day just like you are. if it makes you feel better i totally understand the plot & LOVE it. i've always loved that it's a slow burn, that it's mysterious, that it keeps you guessing what's next. your art has really touched my heart, i think robin and noah's resilience and relationship is so beautiful. keep going, day by day, and if the comics ever have to take a backseat just know you have loyal fans who love you and will stick by you and your characters no matter what ❤️

Heck, I ended up months behind on all my webcomics due to not being online as much because of family issues. And I still understand where the story is going. I see a lot of people saying that to other webcomics that aren't posting every day.. like their attention span is so dang tiny they don't bother scrolling back for an issue or two to remind themselves. >_<

F
FD_FundamentalReading · September 3, 2026

Fanta respectfully. Thank you for venting to us. We're here for you. But if it's not painfully obvious by now, then these people also don't know that 2+2 is four and that the sky is blue. Since they started living together, it's been obvious 🙄. They just need to reread the story. Your job as an author is not to spoon feed people. You're a storyteller not a teacher. And quite honestly I'm now worried that if this gets into your head and your stories are dumbed down going forward, I wont enjoy them which is worse. Either focus on your yourself, your energy and what feels good and true to you. You have to do what works and if spoonfeeding is the way forward, who am I to try to stop you. But also, my condolences to you and your family. I hope all the happy, fun memories will stay with you and make you all smile and be comforted as if they were never gone 😊 🥰🥰

f
fantakoi · September 3, 2026

no worries please, i definitely will not change the way i'm writing Ghost Lights!! I love them way too much to do that and I wouldn't be happy to tell it "for the masses" 🫂 the only thing i will do is to find ways to add information in extras for those who need a little bit more help. thank you for loving it so much it really means a lot to me and is very reassuring to hear

a
atombonds · September 2, 2026

I loved the GIF 🫂🫂🫂 I appreciate your work! I'm glad some folks answered your question, I hope the extras aren't too much extra work! Those doodles are very cute 🥺💕

S
StarlitMuse · September 2, 2026

First of all, my condolences to you. Secondly, I don’t necessarily think that spoonfeeding is the way to go, and will likely impact it in a negative way than a positive way. You have to trust the reader. And if they don’t get it, they can go back and reread it or choose not to interact with it. You can’t please everyone. I’ve been following for a few years now and honestly even with the slowish updates/plot (not a complaint, just an observation) it has been very clear what is going on, and that’s even without a reread. Please don’t change the story or storytelling. Tell the story you want and how you want. The right readers will find it and enjoy it all the more because of it.

f
fantakoi · September 3, 2026

thank you so much 💛🐌 i just want to say that i will definitely not change the way i write the story! I think trying to please everyone would lead me down the path of being completely directionless and after working on it for a decade i would never want this for my boys. I'm going to keep doing what I'm doing and seeing that you love it means the world to me!! And also I do trust that some of my readers will pick up the pieces and I can't wait to see their reactions when they find out that they're actually right about things (one of the greatest joys of being a storyteller)!

D
Dust Rust · September 2, 2026

TBF I think people are not used to good storytelling anymore. Yours is rich, and you have to follow the clues to understand, so if someone reads it fast or don’t pay attention, they’ll be lost. But IMO it’s not a you problem. I personnaly love your story and can’t wait to get more of Noah and Robin’s story (as their self or as the spirits!) ❤️

S
Shock D. Dogg · September 2, 2026

L
Lydie S · September 2, 2026

I think that making the plot not so obvious, trying to let the reader go in the wrong direction and then give tips to the real end etc etc . This is what is fun about a story ! Who would want to read a detective story if you know the killer at the second page... It is our job as reader to read old pages again if needed. And often, it allows to discover more details in the drawing and in the plot and therefore enjoy the whole story again . I don't get what people don't get..... Your job is just perfect the way it is.

Z
Zazoo · September 2, 2026

I’m just echoing what a lot of people are saying here: I never felt lost in the story & love the degree of mystery & mist ❤️ I agree with a lot of your points about a big part od the industry today, it’s sad & frustrating, from both ends of the table. Glad to hear you’re getting maybe a little bit of a second wind with the feedback, and good grief, sorry to hear about your family!! Condoleances & hope you (all) can focus on healing now…

I love a slowburn story, and I never found it particularly confusing, just mysterious. The supernatural mystery has always been intriguing to me and is what drew me in, along with the compelling characters and their relationship. You're doing an amazing job and I'm sorry this affected you!! Take your time and never feel like you need to rush things!! Wishing you much positivity and good health!! 🙌

Oras3582 · September 2, 2026

First of all, I'm so sorry for your and your family's loss. May your grandpa rest in piece. Secondly, yes, speak louder! Or as we say in Germany: REDE! Media being slowly dummed down and softened is such a plague. We need more diverse and complex media! Lastly, people not understanding your story isn't your fault. I don't want to blame any readers either, sometimes stuff just flies over your head, even if it's the most obvious thing, but that's also not the writer's fault. I personally never had the feeling I was lost and I always knew Noah and Robin were reincarnations (btw I always loved the concept of a "place" being a living creature that has to partner up with a nature spirit to create new life), just that I probably need to read the comic again from the beginning, since it's been going for so long, so I probably forgot some details that are important. Nontheless I appreciate the explaining episodes with Mimi, they will certainly help me with checking if I missed anything. XD You're doing great and I love Ghost Lights so much! It's one of the most unique comics I have ever read! Like there are so many great comics, but Ghost Lights for me is this special thing that intrigues you in a different, great way that makes it stand out. <3

B Plant · September 2, 2026

I love complex stories with depth and I've had no problem following along with Ghost Lights. And that's without a re-read which I should probably do since I've been reading this story for years 💙 I don't think it's an issue with you as a storyteller, as I've noticed this problem with just about every other complex story I've read with reader-comprehension just not quite being there. That being said, I think what you're planning with adding notes for those confused readers is a good idea so they can continue to enjoy your story. And don't even get me started on WT censorship, I get episodes taken down constantly and my series is already in the Mature category AND I put effort into censoring the way WT prefers but *still* run into issues, it's SO frustrating! Anyways, big hugs. Your story is amazing and I'm so glad you've been telling it the way you have, you're a wonderful storyteller 💙

v
v_24u · September 2, 2026

First of all: *big hug for you fanta* Secondly: I LOVE it when I have to put some thinking into getting all the details and it makes rereading even better than usually because you notice things you might have missed the first time 😍 Thirdly, the super strict censoring is just wild... And lastly, I love Ghost Lights and will continue to look forward to the story💕

Im so sorry about your grandpa, i understand that feeling of sadness but also that relief that they are finally at rest (my grandma also passed recently at the age of 104). Sending virtual hugs to you. 💙 Also its not your story telling causing any issue!! (You are doing fantastic!) Its 100% peoples bad attension span and lower critical thinking skills.... i dont want to entirely blame the younger generation but it is a result of degraded education and increased screen time over the years....

I truly feel like the majority of the most vocal people (especially on the internet) are the ones who are least likely to want to stop & use their brain. "Everything" these days is about instant gratification & instant answers (looking at you AI bullshit), and when something might take time or thought or goes in a direction the Instant People don't like, they automatically feel entitled to publicly voice their complaints 🙄

*hugs* I can only imagine how you must feel in this moment, about your work, your audience, your grandfather… it’s a lot to live through all at once, but you’re doing it, and that, itself, is an accomplishment As for the comments on your work, a few things came to mind as I read what you wrote: • platforms nowadays expose creators to a greater variety of ‘not quite your core audience’ folks, so you can weigh those opinions accordingly • as for the story structure itself, I think there are a few ways you can frame your tale without needing to rewrite it, including a quick summary at the start of each volume and perhaps some kind of reference page or two at the end that touches on a little of the lore • some stories wander, so own it 😁 let people know what kind of tale you’re writing, and they can decide for themselves if and when they want to follow

r
ramoth · September 2, 2026

Please dont dumb down the story 😭 if need be do little chibi recaps in between story drops to give you more time to work and to explain to the few that aren't getting it. I feel like that could be a good balance in between bc this story is amazing as is

f
fantakoi · September 2, 2026

i won't dumb it down, i promise!! 🫂 if anything i'm more motivated to find ways on how to sneak in information for the ones who do need it (chibi recap, how to spot breadcrumbs, little maps at the end of episodes on where they are right now) and readers who don't need them still get the full experience! i'm glad to know that you enjoy it the way it is and it really means so much to me 💚 thank you

Firstly, my condolences for your grandfather. It is always hard to lose a loved one, even if you know that their suffering has eased. ❤️ Secondly, I have also noticed the trend towards make stories more "palatable" either by making them simpler, less "controversial", etc. while sacrificing the soul of what it means to tell stories. I appreciate the depth of Ghost Lights. I'm also glad that you're willing to make Mimi explains things pages. I do know several people, especially teens and yound adults, who want to be able to engage with stories at a deeper level but don't really have the tools for it. Hopefully those readers will benefit from the Mimi explains and it will help them work towards their overall ability! I look forward to the cute drawings that will come with it.

I'm sorry, my comment about thanking Mimi and not having time to go back and reread until after my exam probably added to your stress. (╥﹏╥) *Offers cookies to apologize* Until the last couple scenes with Noah acting strange and the bleeding dear spirit, I felt like I understood everything completely. No complaints at all though, I'm just a bit dense sometimes. This is one of my ABSOLUTE favorite comics and I'm so grateful that it exists. 💜 For several years now I've always had this feeling towards the end of the month like "it's time for Ghost Lights now, right (✷‿✷)?" And then a couple days later there it would be in my notifications. Please keep doing what you're doing. We love you and the boys and Mimi. 💜 Ps: And as many people that comment about not getting it, there are MANY more that get it but just don't comment for whatever reason. Don't give up. Pps: sorry for your loss. (╯︵╰,)

I just want you to know that as a reader, who isn’t the most vocal commentator: I was totally 100% aware of the fact that they were the reincarnated spirits. Also as any creator, you can’t make everyone happy. If I had to give any unsolicited advice (lol), it would be to make the story how you want it, because no matter what, you can’t curate a story for each and every reader. I wouldn’t change your storytelling tactics because there are some people who don’t understand it right away. Also, even I might be lost at times, but it’s pretty obvious to me that the plot leans heavily into mystery, so even when there is something I don’t understand, I trust in the fact that eventually I will, as the story progresses. Any who, keep up the good work! And remember that some of us lie in the shadows (don’t comment very often) but we’re still here!

C

You are 100% not at fault here, the reincarnation spirits was one of the reasons why I started reading your comic to begin with (and your gorgeous art style, of course ❤️) and I've been a fan for yeeears. The average literacy level is ridiculously low, and it pains me so much, it is something I see in all story telling media. You are a great story teller and very passionate about your boys, and it makes me fume that some people criticize you based on their own stupidity. This is just baffling to me because I thought you’d made everything very obvious so far, and any questions I *do* have I assumed would be answered in the future because the story isn’t finished yet and that’s how storytelling usually works. I feel like reading comprehension in the general populace has suffered immensely in recent years and it makes me sad. I’m just one little voice among many but I love Ghost Lights as it is and will continue to love it in whatever ways it grows and continues in the future. Please don’t doubt yourself and your ability to create. ❤️ I’m so sorry about your grandfather and all the other personal struggles. That all sounds so heavy to deal with. Thank you for continuing to work so hard to create your art and share it with us, in spite of everything. I hope you have the support you need from loved ones and that things get easier soon. I personally believe the issue is more with the new readers, they get a bunch of chapters jump onto the plot without reading the little description and skipping the prototype. So maybe yeah, its a little confusing if you skip all of those because it hasn't get to the point where you clearly see it, although it seems kinda obvious? I mean, maybe not spirits but I think you can figure out they used to be other creatures or at least they had another form. Don't get me wrong, Mimi is a great feature and I'm sure it will help you get to more readers, but as far as worrying about your storytelling, I wouldn't sweat about it. I've been reading since a very long time, and it is true that sometimes I like to read again all chapters to remember scenes, but it is completely normal. You are not a big company and I think I speak for a large amount of your community when I say, we don't expect you to upload at a faster rate. We are here for as long as it may take. We love you, Noah and Robin.

First of all, the really important part: my condolences, feel hugged, the loss of a love one is heartbreaking, may they both rest in peace together now. Now, can people be so dense not to realise the plot?! Fuck me if we keep going like this we won't be able to feed ourselves even though a gi tube... and the pace coments? Wth, people expect for a single person to vomit a story ten times a week or smth? The entitlement of some people. Anyways, please focus on your recovery, I adore every detail an effort you put in each panel 💗
