🔬 The ‘What If?’ That Became Spelltech. 💡

I love a ridiculously powerful anime character. But after enough shows, I started asking:

“Does magic have rules here, or does it just do whatever the next scene needs?”

Jack-of-All-Trades, Party of None, The Unaware Atelier Meister, Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon?, and My Status as an Assassin Obviously Exceeds the Hero’s all gave me that frustration.

Then there’s Anos in The Misfit of Demon King Academy. The biggest offender for me: another impossible problem, another perfectly convenient magical solution. Barely even a change of expression. 😂

Magic starts feeling cheap when it becomes the answer to absolutely everything, with no rules or limitations.

Other shows fed my curiosity. Mushoku Tensei Jobless Reincarnation, Frieren, and Witch Hat Atelier gave me much more to chew on. Fate especially Fate/Strange Fake delivered spectacular grand magic, while The Eminence in Shadow played with the whole overpowered-character fantasy from a meta angle.

So I started asking “What if?”

What if magic belonged to a privileged minority—with academies, a rigid hierarchy, and archmages powerful enough to erase an armies? (who needs guns or cannons?)

They can fly or open portals. Everyone else can ride horses. Why develop technology when the people in charge already have magical answers—and consider technology beneath them?

Now drop an engineer into that world.

Someone working toward a PhD in advanced robotics, bringing years of physics, chemistry, materials, and a habit of analysing everything. Give him a taste of mana… and let the questions begin.

Enters Ren our brilliant isekaied enginner.

Fire and wind? Ren controls the gas mix, drives in more air, and uses mana to heat the gas into plasma. Focus it through a narrow opening, and voilà—a plasma lance slicing through armour.

Earth magic? Why throw rocks when you can shape metal into a precisely designed heavy core, covered with soft metal with rifeling and a bevel - and voilà— bullet and launch it with magic? Suddenly, that familiar spell has very different possibilities.

Exploding fireball? Ren thinks: let’s have some volatile fuel with a bubble of liquid oxygen in a small pressurised metal container, and voilà—a fuel bomb! An explosive surprise in a small package that can devastate an entire building. Becasue - Science, woot woot! 💥

This is where the science nerd in me starts grinning. 😁

With his companions beside him, Ren grows from a nerd into a hero his community relies on. Each success earns trust and admiration; that trust builds confidence, and confidence pushes him toward bigger ambitions.

Soon, he has friends, a home, and people who believe in him—a second chance he’s grateful for, and a reason to protect everything he holds dear.

Then all we need is a big enough threat that will let him unleash his wildest powers! 🧐

Which anime ability made you think, “Why don’t they use it differently?”

well you can go for other games or series and funny enough about our discussion is i dont watch anime but i have played alooooooooooot of porn games and i am guessing most of them are based on anime. when i think magic system i think elder scrolls but its not really much of a system its more you can du anything aslong as you have enough mana i watch alot of series otherwise and as picker said harry potter i havent watched much of that either only played the game and i would say only thing i like about the harry system (the game one) is that you can use your wand as a range weapon played alot of DND games not a big fan of limited use magic were you need rest to get back spells makes me not wanna rest to save time so i dont miss anything and ofc i dont like that you only usually use a staff so your mage needs to go melee cantrip are usually kinda useless unless you specc into it rituals is something that is big in those like the spells tho. witcher is a interesting system only female mages kinda a free system based using up energy but also using rituals i personally like Isekai Paradise its made with a class lvling system and mana system were the main character is a cheater can bypass restrictions and they use crystals to store energy that can be used in tech there is so many magic systems to choose from or make your own rules. i just like braking them :P

Tiny correction: Spelltech is a fantasy isekai game - pg13 like Jobless Reincarnate. Where Rudius has an intimate relationship with his harem, and marries Sylphy, Roxy and Eris, And even has kids with Sylphy and Roxy, which btw are part of the main plot to beat the man-god, but they only shows the before and after, and it’s done very tastefully. We decided to step away from the adult games with new titles. And this is how we got top quality animations, graphics and voice talents, as it’s a premium game. Just wanted to be upfront, Since both you and picker might be seeing and/or expecting this to be an adult game, but it’s not. So it’s maybe closer to Harry Potter in that way lol.

To be honest, I’ve only watched very few anime series, mostly sports ones with a superpower element, or just Dragon Ball Z 🤣. The superpowers just seemed to come out of nowhere or stem from 'ki', without any complicated explanation. I think that, as we get older, we start to look for plot holes and flaws, and consequently we don't enjoy things quite as much. The only work of fiction involving magic that I’ve read where some rules are actually explained, even if the system is broken, is Harry Potter. In that world, the characters are bound to their wands, which makes the magic somewhat more controlled. However, the Killing Curse always struck me as overpowered. If you are hit by it, you are dead (like being shot in the head before you even realise what is happening). I always thought there should be some kind of magical safeguard or protective shield spell 🫠.
