The State of Adult Game Funding in 2026

EDIT: Kickstarter have rolled back their new restrictions on adult projects to the previous rules🎉

The last few years have been rough for indie adult game developers.

Not because players stopped caring.
Not because developers stopped creating.
But because the space around us keeps shrinking.

Payment processors continue tightening restrictions around adult content, pressuring platforms and services to distance themselves from NSFW games entirely. Even legal, clearly labelled adult content is becoming harder to fund and distribute.

Platforms Are Becoming More Restrictive

Steam remains one of the few mainstream storefronts willing to host adult games, but adult titles are still excluded from Early Access. That makes long-term indie development much harder.

More recently, Kickstarter introduced restrictions on adult game campaigns following compliance concerns connected to Stripe. More details under Mature Content.
This video is very informative.

What makes this especially disappointing is that it feels completely opposite to Kickstarter’s “After Dark” promotion in September 2025, where adult games and creators were openly celebrated on the platform.

Even when adult games are technically allowed on a platform, discoverability is often limited compared to mainstream titles. Algorithms, storefront visibility, and advertising restrictions make it difficult for adult indie games to reach new audiences organically.

Publishers Avoid Adult Games Entirely

Another major challenge is that most publishers simply will not consider adult games at all.

Even projects with strong communities, polished visuals, or commercial potential are often rejected immediately because of adult content alone. That leaves many NSFW developers without access to the funding, marketing, QA support, and production stability that traditional indie publishers can provide.

For many adult game creators, self-funding becomes the only realistic option.

Players Are Struggling Too

At the same time, gamers are dealing with rising living costs, poor wage growth, and less disposable income. Supporting indie projects through crowdfunding or subscriptions is harder than ever.

Platforms like Patreon are still valuable, but sustaining support over the multi-year development cycle of a game is extremely difficult.

Adult games also face extremely high piracy rates, which makes maintaining long-term funding even harder for smaller developers.

The Burnout Problem

Many adult indie developers already work full-time jobs and spend most of their spare time building games.

That often leads to exhaustion, anxiety, and eventually cancelled projects.

Sadly, this has become increasingly common across the adult indie space.

Where I Stand

I understand why some developers choose to tone down adult content to fit platform rules more easily.

But I’m not prepared to water down the adult elements of Monster Girl Tales. They are part of the identity of the game and the stories I want to tell.

So now I’m reconsidering how to bring the project to completion without falling into the same burnout cycle that has affected so many others.

Looking Forward

Despite everything, I still remain hopeful that Kickstarter may eventually revisit these restrictions and find a better path forward for adult creators.

And despite all the challenges, the support from players and the adult indie community has kept many projects alive far longer than they otherwise would have survived.

In the meantime, I’d love to hear your thoughts:

Would you support a return to traditional preorder sales?
Or is there another crowdfunding platform you’d feel comfortable using to support adult games?

Hoping that there is a course for reversing this type of overreach by these payment processors. It's incredibly frustrating to see that platforms increasingly exercise the power not to support artists of all creative flavors in the name of an overhanded morality scheme. Definitely will always support as possible, but as you've said, those spaces are becoming fewer and fewer and who knows how things will turn out eventually. If Steam and Patreon succumb to these restrictions, things will really become challenging. Just don't know what the end-goal is with these endeavors. It's endlessly furstrating.

I would support it, I can't really think of any other crowd funding platforms aside from substar though.
