Ethan is willing to blow himself up to save someone, a little maiming is reversible in Ethan's case and would get them what they want and since X1 is aware of this fact, its not really a bad option. X1 gets to let out frustration without causing permanent damage.

But then they won't know if he's able to restain himself from stabbing someone else... I suspect that Ethan is only one that's going to step into that room until they are sure that he doesn't pose a threat.

Well, he's bargaining instead of just taking what he wants. That's at least some kind of progress. :)
