Disney just canceled that $1 billion deal with OpenAi, and OpenAi is shutting down Sora

Another funny thing about that Final Fantasy movie; the production company wanted the "main actor" to be the first digital actor meant to appear in other movies.

Fucking people dont need to work to stay interested in life, Mike. You yourself have demonstrated how rich and fulfilling a life can be if you just get hammered all day and wander around. Saying people need to work sounds like some Mitch McConnel BS to force people into wage slavery.

I'm not saying I've gone looking for Nerd Crew deepfakes...but if I found one, how would I know if it was real? I'm wondering if more performers will start doing roadshows to give audiences an undeniably real experience. (I'm not saying you should do a roadshow, but you totally should). If it helps, the Nerd Crew is the opposite of AI influencers. Those influencers are fake characters pretending to be real people to sell real products, while you are real people pretending to be fake characters to sell fake products. Gives me a real warm glow.

Joshua Cubbin · December 18, 2025

This video is clearly AI. Mike references the scene in Die Hard 2 where they crash the plane into the runway, yet nobody mentions Miles O'Brien is the pilot. They'd never miss an opportunity to co-opt the conversation and force Jay to have to listen through another star trek tangent.

How cute to think that if no humans were required to work the powers that be would just let everyone do fuck-all for free. You know damn well it will become The Running Man except everyone is competing for a shack and food paste for the entertainment of the billionaire class.

K
Kurt · December 18, 2025

Yeah, for real. When Elon Musk mentions that we'll have future UBI, what politicians is he trying to influence to push real legislation? None as far as I can tell. On the other hand, what has he done when he's taken over over real companies or governments? Fire a third of them and leave the rest hanging by a thread.

My husband thinks using AI to be creative is okay, but it bothers the hell out of me. As soon as I see a channel featuring it, I block it and move on. There is so much great content out there from real hack frau-- I mean humans, I'd rather my time and money go towards them instead.

M
Manuel Johnen · December 17, 2025

"My husband thinks using AI to be creative is okay" That's like smoking cigarettes for health...

a
andrew · December 17, 2025

I agree with Mike’s suggestion. If Bugs Bunny cartoons from the 1940s get content warnings, AI-generated content should too. This was the most frightening RLM video ever.

a
andrew · December 17, 2025

Finally. It took all the way to 38:32 to get to that TNG episode. “When the Bough Breaks”

B
Bones Malin · December 17, 2025

It would be nice if we could pass legislation requiring generative images and video to have identifying information embedded into the image data (and not just the metadata), like Rich was suggesting, while also requiring any platforms that host those images to show prominent disclaimers identifying it as AI. This could mitigate people's ability to reupload things to get around the AI tags, especially if ML models are used in the identification process. And I would like to see what Jay suggested: a gigantic watermark across the video that marks it as 100% AI generated, and you can just give it a 'hide' button so that it's not intrusive on the content.

a
andrew · December 17, 2025

The other night on network TV I saw an ad for a broadband company (can’t remember which), but I am certain every person in it was AI generated.

B
Bert Vedder · December 17, 2025

I agree with Jay…. AI created videos are the worst and need no talent at all. Plus the wasted energy it costs🤮👎🏻

A

It feels like wasting vast amounts of rare and valuable minerals to power a factory that only makes garbage.

M
Michael Parker · December 17, 2025

I’ve used AI image generators to try to replicate imagery from my dreams. Maybe I’m not using ones that are advanced enough but for now it seems like AI is not yet capable of replicating the surrealities of the subconscious human imagination. That’s one way hopefully real human art can continue to stand out is with conceits too bizarre and abstract for AI to comprehend and easy create from compiling random elements from images, videos, and other info around the internet.

S
Shan O’Blivion · December 17, 2025

There’s a girl on tumblr (not me surprisingly) who used ai to make a picture of Jay grabbing her boobs. This isn’t really important to the conversation I just have no one else to talk to about this.

A
Amanda Drake · December 17, 2025

Tumblr is where you either go to look at gifs of things you like, or to encourage your mental illness to reach new heights. Sadly, it's often the latter...

d
doe · December 16, 2025

This is a fascinating and thoughtful discussion while still remaining maintaining that classic RLM wry cynicism. Making the connection between social media supremacy with the hysterics and entitlement of this day and age is great. Glad to see that nuance and critical thinking skills aren’t a dying art ! Thanks for all the awesome content and commentary- excited for what 2026 has in store for the RLM team 😇💛

T
THE_GnomeChomskee · December 17, 2025

The fact you are named VALIS makes me think your comment is a genius in-character AI response to the video. If so, kudos!

J
Joe Triscari · December 16, 2025

The big problem is not the slop itself or the ability to make convincing crap. That has been around forever. The bar to do it is just lower. The problem is AI creating perverse incentives. The AI that picks the front page photos on Snapchat is controlling human behavior in a much more insidious way than killbots making threats. People are choosing what to look at based on convincing the AI to present their work for more likes. The problem with AI slop is not the slop itself it’s that the recommender AIs are encouraging people to do it for views.

M
Marvin Falz · December 16, 2025

I don't see why you guys should be too worried about AI. AI slop is mostly, no strike that, exclusively sensationalistic and its only premise is "Wouldn't it be crazy to see xzy?" But your fans are not here for any sort of sensationalism, aside from hearing the famous Rich Evans laugh of course. There is just something uniquely RLM that no-one ever will be able to imitate, least of all AI. How could AI love films and filmmaking? How could AI simulate friendship and human emotion. And the kind of fans you attract are too clever and, dare I say, sophisticated to fall for the AI crap. And I remember that on several occasions the last couple of years, fans voiced their readiness to migrate with you to another platform or to your own servers in your studio. But I also do wonder if the news across the Western world have become so ubiquitously negative, they advance the winter blues. I'd rather go out for a walk. And remind myself that the Western institutions are not dead, they're rather transforming and looking for ways to survive. To quote Captain Kirk in Who Mourns for Adonais?: "That's where our duty lies."

P
PIG · December 16, 2025

For so long the TNG "When the Bough Breaks" has represented to me how AI will really end humanity. Not with Terminators, but through a slow, spiraling decline, where humans no longer feel the need for commitment or purpose, and the population gradually fades away over generations due to a lack of procreation. If Red Letter agrees with then I MUST be right :)

J
Ja Dav · December 16, 2025

The thought that we might be being observed in 2025 like the society in Who's Watching The Watchers is rather depressing...

M
Melanie Jane · December 16, 2025

The more AI becomes ubiquitous, the more people will seek out real, human creativity. Then again, experience of working with the general public tells me they are absolute chumps with zero discernment.

A
Amanda Drake · December 17, 2025

It is really shocking how little thought the average person gives to the stuff they're consuming, but I also have hope. It also makes me want to collect more physical media, because I feel that the next step of enshittification is to start making it harder and harder for people to watch things from the "before time". As it is now, they're already starting to erode classic things by changing the effects or making tweaks before streaming it.

R
Robert Dodrill · December 16, 2025

The worst that I have seen is this guy who takes pictures of people in public then makes them do some crazy thing in AI, like humping a store. Mannequin, then he goes and confronts them with the video as if he caught them. I'm just waiting for the inevitable headline of someone being arrested or shot.

J
Juan Calvo · December 16, 2025

Is AI replacing AIDS and 9/11? As the most depressing subjects that somehow RLM manages to extract comedy from them, yes.

K
Kellic · December 16, 2025

"AI in charge of curing hunger" Careful Mike. That is how Soylent Green happens. As AI doesn't give a crap about cannibalism if the goal is to feed people.

J
Jon Atom · December 16, 2025

The thing about AI at this point is that it's a huge money loser for the services that generate AI. For every nonsense little AI slop that someone generates to post on facebook, ChatGPT loses money. And that's not an easy problem to solve -- companies like OpenAI think they can absorb that loss now to dominate a future where this is profitable, but it's unclear to anyone when or how that will be... The other thing, AI art is not the area where this companies (and their investors) are hoping to make money. AI art is something impressive looking that they can show to investors and customers, but that's not where the real money is. The hope is that at some point in the future AI agents will be able to replace "real" jobs (not just those lame artists jobs) which is what has investors foaming at the mouth. The problem is AI is nowhere near as good at that yet, and some people doubt it will get there. That's why I'm not as pessimistic yet. Although who knows, maybe nobody is safe.

A
Amanda Drake · December 17, 2025

Well, I guess start planning your post-apocalyptic persona, so we'll be ready to storm the mansions of the monsters who ruined the world. I'm going to start modifying a 1997 Camry to look as Mad Max as possible.

It's scary to just watch people blankly consume content in general. It's like watching someone just be dead for a bit...

R
Rankin Fithian · December 16, 2025

I participate in a small online community where we do screenplay challenges: you get assigned a prompt and condition from other members and write a feature length screenplay in about 6 weeks. It's a wonderful community, immensely positive, and a guaranteed way to get constructive feedback on your draft. There's a competitive aspect, but we're not even talking cash prizes - it's basically for bragging rights among a tribe of like 40. This last go-round, a longstanding member (participant for around 8 years, he must have at least 10 or 12 scripts under his belt from this process?) turned in a script that was at least half ChatGPT. It just goes to show that ANY currency, social or otherwise, will incentivize the pylons out there that think that having an idea is the same as doing the work to execute it. But it's even worse when you're not even having your own idea - the only thing worse than saying "Hey ChatGPT, write me a script about a werewolf on a non-Earth planet," is knowing that SOMEONE ELSE suggested the "werewolf" and the "non-Earth planet" part. But the way forward isn't to give up. It's to keep making the real stuff [I mutter insistently to myself, rocking back and forth while I dissociate].

F
Frank Stock · December 16, 2025

Jay's a real one. Thanks for pointing out the environmental impact. It's way worse than most people realize.

A
Amanda Drake · December 17, 2025

And it's for pure garbage, too! It's like watching someone clearcut a square mile of rainforest to make skibbidy toilet Funco Pops... There's something uniquely painful about watching that level of waste.

Z
Zoe Crockett · December 16, 2025

I've spent my life crafting my art learning how to do it the old-fashioned way, so it's disheartening to see people able to create "artwork" in a matter of seconds using prompts. I agree with Rich that we'll just have to learn to coexist with AI, as it's not going away. Human content-creators will not go away, it's just going to make it harder for us to earn a buck and be noticeable in the sea of AI slop. Also, who's the obnoxious bearded guy in the AI videos (the ones where he's tackling his grandmother or floating down the sidewalk)?

M
Marvin Falz · December 16, 2025

I am on the fence if it'll really be harder to be noticeable. The way I see it, AI generated material has always that one little speck of artificialty that makes it uncanny, unreal. One example would be the perfectly distributed light, which you never have, not even in controlled studio environments with no shadows. Actual artwork by actual artists does feel real in comparison. But I also understand how AI-dominated social media and video platforms makes it harder to be noticed. I believe the old word-of-mouth will help. And curated platforms run by people you can actually contact as opposed to faceless corporations like YouTube. I believe, to quote Captain Pike in The Cage: There's a way out of every prison and I will find it.

R
Ryan Cowan-Malloy · December 16, 2025

I'm sure most of the people loudly proclaiming that they will never watch or participate in AI are having chatgpt curate their resume.

I watched that documentary about hitler's dna, it was on some bigger british channel, it had a lot of AI generated videos, so Sag-Aftra may block it in USA but it will live on in other countries, and again free market will decide

If anyone is worried about AI, it can be unplugged, so in case AI kills us all, its 100% our fault 🤪

A

I hate to be the one to say it, but humans are sort of known for having the intellect to understand and prevent numerous threats to our wellbeing, but then just ignoring that and doing the stupid thing anyways. What other species will stick a lit roman candle in its ass to impress someone?
