Announcement: Proper Shaders for VC

Released here.

NOTE: The $300 spent on the project was for the San Andreas version, not Vice City. My focus is almost entirely on the SA version, having done more than half of the features there. Ports to VC and III are a way to try to recoup some of the investment.

Proper Shaders is a shader mod for GTA SA that I proposed last year.

The idea is to improve the old GTA graphics without breaking the game or hurting performance.

I don't have much experience with coding, but I've been around GTA modding since 2014 and I know how the game works internally, so I started using AI assistant services. By combining my knowledge of the game with their assistant, I was able to add shaders to GTA SA through my Nano Shaders project. I didn't just prompt, "Hey, do this for me, make no mistakes.", there was lots of manual works in the code.

Junior saw my Nano Shaders project and noticed the potential in the idea, so we started working on our Proper Shaders for SA.

At the moment, I have already spent around $300 of my savings on the mod, and about half — maybe more — of the features in it came from me. I haven't earned a single penny from it. I'm not wealthy, and I can't keep burning through my savings to make the mod, so I decided to port Proper Shaders from SA to VC and III to at least try to recoup my investment.

The alpha version for VC will be released now in the $5 tier and features: Real-time cascaded per-pixel shadows with PCSS (not blurred at moment, similar to 03-26 release for sa, will make blurred in the next updates) , HDR simulation with ACES tonemap (like modern games), Sun rays, Lightmaps support (requires the Xbox map), Mipmapping support and dual-pass transparency fixes.

The plan is to update it monthly, day 25, backporting the stuff we made for SA.

I might also release other textures mods and projects on this tier. I have a lot of ideas in mind, but I have depression, so having energy for even more projects is complicated, but I really want to do more stuff later.

And to be clear, this WILL NOT affect RoSA releases schedule, I can manage my time between projects.

The proper shaders are really good. Will this project have reflections on cars, volumetric clouds, water with reflections, and volumetric lights like in GTA SA?

where do you spend money making a GTA mod? real question, I don't make mods, but I'm curious about how a GTA mod needs money to be made. hiring people? buying programs? (não sei se tu é br mas pode falar me português também, me dei de conta agora no nome kkkkkkkkkk)

I imagine if someone is doing any amount of texture work by hand they're paying a licensing fee for whatever software they're using, paying for upgrades to their pc hardware, and trying to get some kind of compensation for the time spent doing this instead of whatever other work they could be doing that might make them money.

YA HE ADQUIRIDO EL MOD, UN SALUDO DESDE VENEZUELA, PENSE QUE EL GTA VICE CITY NUNCA MÀS TENDRIA MÀS MODIFICACIONES GRÀFICAS YA QUE SON POCAS LAS PERSONAS QUE SE DEDICAN A DESARROLLAR MODS PARA EL GTA VICE CITY, MUCHAS GRACIAS

Am I not grateful? That's a bold statement, but it's completely unfounded. I also work as a security guard, and I don't make much money, but I've subscribed to download your San Andreas retexture project more than once. I stream on various platforms, and sometimes recommend your work to people. But I have my own opinion. How could I know about your difficulties developing a mod? Everyone is struggling financially during these difficult times for the entire world...

"How could I know about your difficulties developing a mod?" It's literally written in the post you commented on. But that's a detail; even if that weren't the case, it's a small amount to support the creation of a completely unique mod that no one in the world has managed to release something like this, stable and optimized, to this day, on my Patreon the SA version is $8 with lots of supporters, and the support is optional as an incentive for the mod to continue being developed; you don't need to belittle it.

$5 for an alpha, are you serious? It's not even a full release...

It IS a full release, is not a final release (just like any other mod, it will be improved, that's why is charging $5, to keep the mod being developed. If it doesn't generate profit, the mod will be canceled), but is a full stable release, for a mod that no one has yet released anything of this caliber, stable and optimized, for two decades, and as mentioned, it cost $300 to create.
