Deep within a shadow-drenched forest, where sunlight struggles to pierce the canopy, lies a clearing that hums with unease. At its center rises a weathered stone platform, cradling a towering, leafless tree whose twisted limbs seem to claw at the sky. Charms, talismans, and bone trinkets sway from its branches, whispering of forgotten rites performed in the dead of night. Candles ring the platform’s steps, their flames inexplicably burning to life after dusk—beckoning the bold, the curious, or the foolish into the heart of a ritual long abandoned… but never truly ended.

Encounter: In the depths of a dark forest, a clearing opens around a raised stone platform where a massive, leafless tree looms. As night falls, candles encircling the steps ignite on their own, and the air grows heavy with whispers. The sudden flare of light reveals figures emerging from the tree line, ready to defend—or complete—a ritual that should have ended long ago.
Environmental Hazards: Tangled roots that trip and slow movement, slick moss-covered stones, dangling talismans that snag weapons or clothing, and rolling banks of fog that reduce visibility and distort sound.
Possible Loot: A ceremonial dagger with occult engravings, survival rations and ammo stashed in a hidden cache beneath the platform, a flickering flashlight or lantern, a journal of cryptic ritual notes, and a humming talisman that might be supernatural or experimental tech.
Creatures or Enemies: Masked cultists mid-ritual, twisted forest predators altered by years of dark magic, scavengers drawn by rumors of treasure, or a supernatural guardian bound to the tree itself.
Tactical Feature: The elevated platform grants ranged advantage but leaves combatants exposed. Dense forest edges offer concealment and ambush potential. Hanging charms can be cut to distract or obstruct, while the candle ring can be knocked over to start small fires, reshaping the battlefield.
DM Inspiration: Is this a sacred site corrupted by dark forces, or a trap laid by desperate survivors who prey on the curious? The clearing begs for answers—and demands a price from those who seek them.
Bonus Twist: The tree itself feeds on blood spilled nearby—each wound sustained in combat makes its branches grow, and when fed enough, it awakens.
