It’s crazy to think at this time video calling was just starting to be a thing only very few had access to. I remember seeing this in the theater and a lot of other movies that summer. I had just turned 16 and my best friend worked at the movie theater so we got to screen everything we wanted to.
Stan Winston is probably most well known for his Terminator & Terminator 2 practical effects.
Classic 90's fun. Saw this one in the theaters, was just the right age to enjoy it tremendously. Didn't even realize Bruce Campbell was in this. Guess I never saw it again by the time I learned who he was. Solid score. Ernie Hudson was delightful.
1995.... look at this gauntlet of bangers May 4 - Crimson Tide May 12 - Die Hard With a Vengence May 19 - Braveheart June 9 - Congo June 16 - Batman Forever June 30 - Apollo 13 /Judge Dredd I saw every one of those in the theater when they came out. they havent had summers like that in 25 years
Tim Curry...'nuff said
Calling this movie Peak 90s is maybe the biggest insult aimed at the 90s I have ever heard. Good sign you missed the 90s.
Honestly, this is just big budget B movie fun. It's like an old Alan Quartermain or Tarzan movie with a thin veneer of scientific respectability over the top. Everyone gets to ham it up a bit, the practical ape suits look good, and literally everyone is in the movie. Call it a solid B for bananas monkey movie.
That hot air balloon would make a good target for those heat seeking missiles along the border...
I haven't seen this movie in 30 years. I remember liking it a lot (I saw the movie before trying to read the book, so I wasn't able to get into the novel sadly), but I had forgotten nearly everything about it until tonight.
In hindsight not one of my favorite movies, but I had Congo action figures when this came out. 😁
I remember being fascinated by the use of sentry turrets.
I went to see this without any knowledge of the book and cam away a little disappointed. Watching again when it came to VHS I enjoyed it but felt like something was missing - clearly I still need to read the book. I will praise the practical effects, however, and anything with Tim Curry (R.I.P.) in I will always watch. There's a good review on a YouTube channel by Oliver Harper who broke down and reviewed this film - he's a big film nerd and talks about a lot of the SFX, behind the scenes stuff, and all that. Worth checking out in your own time, if you like? Here's the link (save you looking for it): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kbChe0fiF9E Look forward to hearing your thoughts.
I read most of Michael Crichton's books in the early 90s...then came Congo. I got about 1/3 of the way into it and gave up. I never went back, to this book, or any other Crichton novel. Shame, considering I loved most of his other novels.
i remember when the teaser for jurassic park came out when i was 12. i grabbed my mom's novel (mind you, i HATED reading as a teenager) i fucking read that shit cover to cover in 1 saturday. my mom nearly fainted.
I seem to remember there was a shitload of marketing for this movie at the time. I think I still have a box of Congo pogs somewhere. 😂
This movie was trying to capitalize on the massive popularity of Jurassic Park. IIRC, Crichton's name was all over it. It ends up basically being a big budget B-movie.
I remember being so excited for this movie, having been a big fan of Michael Crichton and having read the book a year or so before. My expectations were not met.
Mine, either
STOP EATING MY SESAME CAKE
I was looking forward to saying that. I prefer savoury food anyway so…yeah whatever.
