I saw this movie at a mall in Bloomington in October 1987 I was pledging of fraternity at the time I thought this was a really cool movie. In the way they told the story but more interesting than that. Was the movie poster outside the theater advertising a movie that never was heavy metal two was supposed to be released in the summer of 1988 Had a really interesting large bird character with a writer not the same as Tarna from the first heavy metal movie but apparently some kind of advancement of that warrior cast in oversized albatross. Still this was a great movie loved Alice Cooper in it. He was just the right kind of creepy. Donald pleasant is always fun. There was a grifter back in the day called Jay-Z Knight who did this thing called Ramtha I’ll let you find that on the Internet on your own if you want and the final incarnation of the creature with the blond hair appears to have meant to represent Jay-Z night could just be a coincidence but who knows not everything‘s a cowinky-dink.
One of my favorite movies. One of the last "new concept" movies before the endless remakes we get today.
This movie is in my list of "I do not know why I like this movie so much but I do."
Prince of Darkness is Carpenter's version of a Quatermass type story and his return to independent film making after frustration with the studios.
I figued that the Quatermass movies was where Carpenter got his nome de plume for this movie from! Makes sense all the way around.
Well, glad you guys got a chance to check this one out! I definitely enjoyed the reaction. Even if there were things you didn't like about it, you seemed to have a good time with the reaction. It's a mixed bag of a movie at times and very much a slow burn up until a crazy ending. I think that the real horror here is that even if they stopped the darkness from escaping the other side, it's just going to happen eventually anyway. It's pretty bleak in that regard. Add the fact that this thing is operating by rules we do not and probably cannot understand, and it definitely qualifies as cosmic horror IMO. I would love to see you guys react to Big Trouble in Little China and In the Mouth of Madness someday. I know that Alex has seen both, but I think you guys would have a good time with them. Hope I am not judged too harshly for this choice! ;) Take care guys!
Enjoyed this a lot! Thanks Paul!
In the late '80s, there were typewriters with a small display where you can type ahead a few lines and make corrections before printing
DONT KNOW IF YOU HAVE SEEN OR HAVE TIME FOR, BUT A FUN NOT QUITE HORROR THAT I JUSTS WATCHED ANOTHER REACTOR DO IS THE BURBS (1989) WITH TOM HANKS. INCLUDES A SMALL PRE-TREK CAMEO FROM A 90S TREK REGULAR. 9
I love this film. One of my favourite 100 movies.
love that Josh clocked Lutan from Code of Honor!! and yes, please do watch Big Trouble in Little China and also In the Mouth of Madness, those are crucial Carpenter flicks. and also Alex completely zeroed in on the mustached main character having Tom Atkins energy, iirc they wrote the role with him in mind and he couldnt make scheduling work (i think i read somewhere)
also? i can't help but see the old guy in the opening and think "Curzon Dax?"
This movie was profoundly depressing to me. Won't be watching.
Sadness! Well, to be fair, it IS cosmic horror at its heart. Cosmic horror is not very cheerful, is it? I find that it's kind of the middle part of Carpenter's unofficial cosmic horror trilogy, starting with The Thing and ending with In the Mouth of Madness. The man does bleak very well. And bleakness is definitely not everyone's cup of tea.
One of my favorites, not the best movie or scariest, but the premise is very scary
