YOUTUBE - Past Tense (Part 1 & 2) | Star Trek Fans First Time Watching DS9

I never seen this episode as preachy . I seen it through the lenses of “The road to hell is paved with good intentions “ quote . If it was preachy about anything it was about government intervention. and it’s constant pouring endless money in solutions that don’t solve anything If you guys still don’t like the story/plot after looking at it in that lens ….. that’s fine .
I completely agree with you guys. I don’t like being preached to. In 1994 this didn’t feel like preaching because we didn’t have these kinds of problems then. Watching it for the first time in 2026 I can see how it turned you guys off.
I’m glad I got a free month of Patreon membership during the Generations premiere so now I can complain here about their opinions on that episode! Just joking! Thanks for the free membership, guys! 🖖
Glad that you brought Past Tense not up in the discussions in the Episodes that came after. I just wanna forget this moment. :)
Seeing some ripples from the uncut, I waited til watching the edit before responding. Actually yeah. Most of what you said is right. I'll only put it down to a C for myself though. For me it's just fine or Season 1-2 tier. I guess the one thing I don't quite get is how strong and visceral the reaction was. I don't mind myself if the most there is of this 'just fine' 90s TV episode is that it makes people talk or think about it. I think I saw 'No future stays bright forever' in a trailer awhile back. Well. The tail of TNG, DS9 with the Maquis and now the Dominion. Star Trek around here is about fighting to not let things go bad.
Why aren't more people complaining about the terrible guest acting in this one? Did Mugatu spike me with crazy pills?
Yeah it’s bad well at least BC is, I think the ep is a C but it’s not so much their grades on the ep, it’s their juvenile attitudes, that rub me worse
We all knew the streak would end here... We just couldn't say it 😉
I want that thumbnail on a t-shirt.
I was excited two years ago when Sisko was on Earth
I enjoyed this episode…. But it warms my heart knowing if they ever get to “New Trek” they’ll see that’s it this on steroids plus bad writing…. REALLY BAD … and they’ll despise it too ❤❤❤
There’s depressing media that is profound and keeps people from going numb or averting their eyes and then there’s depressing media that makes me think “yup. The world sucks and will continue to suck. Thanks for the reminder.” And I’ve tend to put these episodes in that category. I don’t feel good watching them or like I’ve been challenged to confront something I may know but prefer to avoid. Yeah in the show you know the world gets past it and builds utopia on earth. Maybe in the 90s that felt like a hopeful note. But now? Not so much.
YouTube comment I saw: “I'm here for the insane takes too.” That… really should be on a T-shirt.
People who have watched TA for awhile should have known this one would not go well
Some people will watch us for years but still think we will like it if they like it, then be confused when we don’t, despite the episode doing so many things we complain about all the time. It is what it is!
Alex’s Mighty Mouth impression made me laugh my ass off again! The gift that keeps on giving! 🖖😂
I agree with you guys 100%! Thank you for your honest opinions.
The Raven character if DS9 is the original version of ECW unfortunately cannot be revealed for Another 2 seasons due to spoiler reasons
Follow up and let us know then!
I've always enjoyed these episodes, but looking at them with fresh eyes, they're pretty bad. The total lack of nuance really drags them down.
Perfect thumbnail
The Human Muppet!
These episodes suddenly feel current.
If there is one thing you can always count on from YouTube comments it is rational nuanced takes. I look forward to an enlightened discussion over there
“Now, look, good sirs, I have a minor quibble I feel I must sternly address with you regarding one of the theses you are asserting in your videographic essay.”
Oh my goodness, I couldn't agree more with you guys. I hate these episodes ... they are so terribly boring, self-righteous, and preachy. And I felt like I was crazy because everyone else seems to like them. So ... thank you. Unimportant comment: I always took DS9 as a modern-day corrolary to the Yugoslav war, not the Middle East. The Bajorans were the Bosnians and the Cardassians were the Serbs.
I’m not educated on international politics or history so “Middle East” was the extent of what I could compare it to 😂💀
I've always thought this was a D, so I totally thought you guys would like it. Hilarious
🍿🍿🍿
I find this dual episode almost scary to watch right now. Something about the lockdowns adds to the feeling of 'this could at least theoretically is something that could have occurred recently in our real life as well." They also got so many of the characters right. The burned out social worker who wants to help but can't really do anything. The security officer who feels bad but just wants to be with his family as he knows he can't do anything about such a huge, systemic problem.
As a fellow wrestling fan, I read that thumbnail text in Michael Cole’s voice, lol.
So 2020’s Portland is a sanctuary city with a huge homeless and unemployment problem and civil unrest? Bullshit sci-fi nonsense…
It will be fine.
Brace yourselves for the YouTube shitstorm
Apparently not just YouTube, if you scroll up a bit.
