Some aspects definitely have not aged great obviously, but (I HOPE this is cryptic enough) we're introduced to what will later be, not a recurring character, but a recurring actor ;-)
Just wait until we start bugging you about Fringe ;)
That’s already started too! Hahaha
So they can shapeshift and disappear. They're not just changelings, they're jem'hadar too. Very strange episode, but great to see Rob Bowman's direction on the channel again. The weird thing is everything seems to point to them being aliens, but didn't they say the pheremones had human DNA in them? You'd figure if any part of them would give away being alien it would be their DNA.
The pure joy of getting worked! And seeing others get worked. Forgot that Scully almost got wild, lol.
I love that so many people are now watching one of my favorite shows because you guys are covering it. I went on this same journey a long time ago. TNG, DS9 & then The X-Files! Glad to be home again
Ryan coogler plans to bring it back.
I love the X-files, I didn't have the show to watch with you so I got the 1st season on amazon to watch with you. but I still love star trek more
Loved your episode review. IMO it's an underrated episode. I loved it even during its original airing. FWIW, the female version of Marty hints at the "disappearance" when she talks to the dead guy in the room, saying the others will punish her for what she's done, "because the day is coming, and they won't leave without me."
Definitely a scenario where on first watch I was clueless but then watching it back after seeing the end I was like “oh.. she basically just says it” lol
everytime there was a nightclub scene, they played the exact same 90's break beat track. I lol'd at the idea of an X-File nightclub episode wrapped around the mystery of the monotone.
Weird episode that I barely remember but I enjoyed it anyway. Even mid X-Files is usually enjoyable. Interesting guest star with a small role I never noticed before too.
If this episode is freaking you out in a good way....wait til you get to the really good episodes in later seasons....just saying
this show Needs to be Biweekly
Bowman was one of the better X-Files Directors
Supernatural might be another good one
Yep recommended it to them, they love paranormal, creepy, horror, and character work. Supernatural is literally tailor made for them. But much later, after X-files.
This is the episode that inspired Signs (probably 😄).
Actually the inspiration was for "Signs" was "Night of The Living Dead" with Aliens.
Hey! Langley Township! I've been living in Metro Vancouver for the past 16 years and it's kinda fun seeing places I now recognize on screen
Unlike Star Trek, I'm watching these for the first time right along with you guys. I never got into the series back when it first aired for reasons I have never been able to make sense of. This was (and still is) exactly the kind of show that I would look for. Wait! I know why! I was stupid. That's it..... really stupid
Better late than never! And you get to watch with some smart and insightful reaction/reviewer friends, now.
Bowman TNG only a young director.
Man, I LOVE watching your faces light-up watching this show. I have watched many YT reactors to X-Files, but they are usually alone and cannot have a real in depth conversation about the episode, that's why I love your intelligent banter about the series, you appreciate the art. Side note : Speaking of the movie/TV industry, I work in sheet metal production, and companies will occasionally get custom work done. (We did work for K-19 : The Widowmaker with Harrison Ford) One time we built a large fake walk-in freezer/fridge combo wall for a local Western TV production. A couple weeks later they come back, and we are like 'was the work OK? did you like it?', you know. They said they loved it, it looked great on film, but they need another wall built, exactly the same. (these aren't cheap) We said for sure, but why? They said 'We didn't get all the shots we needed before we exploded the set' Ahh, the film Industry.
Insane 🤣
You can buy seasons of the X-Files on YouTube. That's how I watch along. Thing is I have them on DVD too, but YouTube has blue ray picture quality. Found this out after watching your trailer for Beyond The Sea. Anyway it could be an alternative for getting more seasons for yourself.
I believe there's some missing episodes though.. and the entire season 10 mini season is missing. So good to be aware of
Looking back on this episode, the aesthetic of this episode reminds me of an M. Night Sham-hammer movie.
probably the most hated-on director ever. lol. his movies are wildly hit and miss but 6th Sense, Unbreakable, Signs, and Split are all fucking great movies.
Hey I was a fan as soon as I watched the pilot when it came out hahaha. looking now, I notice the drawing on the wall, it looked like the alien human from the movie "Species" (1995) but that came out later. Bowman from what I read purposely filled the nightclub scenes with H.R. Giger imagery. Giger was the designer of the original Alien creature. Now Giger did end up doing the creature from the movie "Species" great ending to this one.
Great reaction! There will be so many more to come with this series. I'm so glad that you are noticing the direction, the score, the framing, and the lighting. The lighting is of special interest. Pay attention to the colors used to signify specific themes or characters. This journey is going to be so much fun!
The score while Mulder was exploring the caverns was very ..... Exorcist-y
There's a fair amount of overlap between Star Trek and X-Files fans. You get a lot of the same things: Storytelling that isn't limited by real-world constraints; explorations of morality, often framed with a nod to current societal issues; character arcs that persist across episodes and seasons; direction and music that are distinctly better than they probably should be for the genre; Rob Bowman. This episode was particularly Trekkian, like Star Trek when it goes horror mode (Conspiracy, Night Terrors, Genesis, etc.). I had forgotten all about this one and it was a really fun watch.
There's not much detail about The Kindred in 'official' lore but there are some fun fan theories; however, leave those alone for the time being as it will spoil future stories. I've always enjoyed this episode, mostly for the mystery, and because of what I've cited above. Glad you both enjoyed it and it was great listening to your own speculation about who 'they' were! No answers for our heroes either which, for me, is one of the strengths of the show. They don't always win and don't always find out what the hell is going on! Look forward to the next one!
Will watch along asap. Strange topic back then, now, not so much.
