Really enjoyed this discussion. DS9 excels at character work, and I think you will both dig where these characters’ arcs end up going.

Season 1 Dax felt 100% like the Sigourney Weaver character in Galaxy Quest - there to look good and tell everyone else what the computer said. I loved to see the improvement in writing for her in Season 2. As you said, they've basically got 7 characters in one, so there's no way a good writer could ever run out of material for that.

I still don’t get why search for Spock is your favorite. The plot is given away in the title. They literally reuse footage and major storylines from earth of khan. The story is basically, let’s go search for Spock! Oh…. Wait,,,,, we already know where he is. Let’s go uber to pick up Spock! The. Klingons really have no purpose in this movie except to force some tension. But its reused tension from wrath of khan. Really lazy writing.

You guys are right about how make up can ruin guest actor when you were talking about guest reveals. A prime example is how Mark Lenard was the Klingon captain in the beginning of Star Trek the motion picture

and James Doohan was the voiceover giving the commands instead of Mark Lenard.

Jake was and is always terrible. Just a mediocre actor. Nog is enjoyable but a little over the top in the early seasons. Sisko only gets marginally better as an actor as the series progresses. Just have to learn to tolerate him. Kyra and Dax are hit or miss. Everyone else pretty much dominate their parts. But that’s just me. 😁

I could swear I've heard some parts of this discussion before, spoken exactly the same way... Hey, why is my calendar showing 3/3/3333?

Lol, you have, this was posted on Patreon on Nov 30. Not sure why Josh re-posted here again unless it's edited in some way.

My top five of seasons for TNG usually stay the same, DS9 is not the same, even some of their singular episodes meld into each other because with TNG you watch and unless its a two parter your mind moves on but with DS9 with a few exceptions, you just keep going then you look back and oh yeah Whisphers and Armageddon Game are two of the best of season two if you accept season separators. As to the characters, Star Trek specifically and TV in general even when its a female writer are not good at writing female characters so when they get it right drink your favorite drink from a champagne glass

Alex, regarding the Cardassia being a planet with a lot of sunshine, as it turns out it is not necessarily required in theory. Of course on our planet it is the easiest way for reptiles to receive energy they need for warmth being cold blooded. However in theory the only thing they require is warmth/heat/energy, regardless how they get it. So if a planet is dark but has a very high thermal energy they could live underground or in other dark places and receive all the heat they needed. Especially if we're talking about a hypothetical alien world. Partly a possible proof in our on world would be tropical jungles like the Amazon rainforest. The climate is often very cloudy and rainy. There are very deep and dark parts of it, and they're hot as hell and swarming with reptiles. There is of course some sunshine there but not even remotely close like in the desert. All that considering I think it is a decent argument, at least in theory, that there could be a dark and gloomy alien world where a dominant species is reptilian. And it wouldn't be purely fantastical, but would be based in science and most definitely enough for science fiction.
