1940s Windbreaker Jacket with Detachable Hood Depew No. 3079

Let's talk jackets, my friends.

While it's not jacket weather here in humid-as-hell Georgia yet, I know many of you are turning your attention to your fall wardrobes.

This is a great time of year for a transitional jacket for just that extra bit of warmth as morning cool down and evenings start to carry a chill. It hasn't happened here yet but I'll be heading to Virginia for another house-hunting trip next month and I know things will start to cool there.

As I have been watching the internets making their fall sewing plans, I am reminded that I have the coolest jacket that I can finally wear as I travel North next month!

The jacket can be sewn with two different sleeve options, plain or padded and pleated at the shoulders, both of which gather into a cuff. The optional hood is attached to the jacket with buttons and the double-breasted front is gathered into a waistband for a slightly bloused effect with flap pockets. Detailed instructions are included for lining the jacket if you wish to add that option.

I really wish I could take credit for this lovely sewn version, but I can't. I had this jacket sewn for me a few years ago. At the time, I was just entering the early days of what I like to call The Auto-Immune Montage. I had finished this pattern release but I was also exhausted and unable to walk without help most days. This lasted a couple of years before doctors were finally able to get me back on my feet.

I badly wanted to sew this jacket but knew it would never happen. So instead of adding it to my stack of unfinished projects from that era, I sent my fabric and pattern to my colleague Gina Pala of The Copy Cat Custom Vintage. She did a stunning job making this up for me so if you're ever looking to get some custom sewing done, I highly recommend her.

The fabric is vintage silk suiting and lined with Libations in Ocean cotton By Melody Miller for Ruby Star Society. The buttons are vintage mother of pearl from my late mama's collection.

A few days ago, the quite-talented Dear Tally posted her own rendition of this jacket pattern to Youtube. She created a more cropped and fitted version of the jacket and it is absolutely charming!

Watch Dear Tally's Video here.

If you've made this pattern up yourself, I would love to see pictures.

If you want to make one for yourself, you can find the pattern in bust sizes 32-46, in both print and pdf here.

Happy sewing,

VERY cute jacket! If I wore things that highlighted my waist, I would snatch one up!
