it's okay to dislike westerns. much of the history of the western is mythologizing of the frontier and the idea of regeneration through violence. it is deployed in many different ways but can be stale. even when there was a shift towards introspective examinations of gunslingers a la Spaghetti westerns and stuff like Unforgiven it can't be said that they truly escape the propagandistic tendencies of the genre. much like country music the genre tends to define itself by trying to be different from its roots while still somehow preserving those roots. Slotkin's Gunfighter Nation discusses westerns in more detail along those lines
I say all of that as a fan of westerns. they are often sort of the Marvel films of their time, not terribly good but useful for charting cultural shifts within a decade. you can see conservative opinions on extrajudicial conflicts change over time in the depictions of Mexico in westerns. in that regard they can be quite useful as well
Alright you did it! At last the Infinity Film Reel is complete!
