Hey All!

Introducing the Ghost Crab!!  No, it's not all that ghostly, but that's what these cute crustaceans are called!  I've been wanting to try a crab for quite some time, so it was a lot of fun to design this fella.

This design is a little unique in that most of the joints are designed to hold their posing.  The legs do wiggle and flop when in their print position, but twist them around into the standing position and the joints tighten, allowing the legs to hold the body up in many fun positions.  Same goes for the arms and main claw joint.  The knees and pinchers also have ridges inside that allow them to hold poses.  Those hinged joints may have a little resistance the first time you try to move them.  Don’t be afraid to use some force to get them moving.

One last fun detail... the main limb joints are all snap-fit.  So you can print the legs in different colors and just snap them into the sockets.  I'm including several files, the "Full" version is the whole crab as a print-in-place model, and there is also a folder of "Separate Parts" which will make it easier to mix and match to your desire.  All of the parts are interchangeable whether you start with the Full version, or jump right into printing the parts separately.  It's also a great safety net, if you have a print failure, or if your printer tolerances are too tight or too loose.  You can just print the legs a little bigger or smaller to compensate.  There is a PDF guide included in the download.

I created a Demo Video of how all the joints work, and how you can replace the legs if you want!

3D PRINTING SETTINGS

”GhostCrab_Full” A or B: These versions are print-in place and ready to go, all in one STL/print.
- The“A” version has standard sized tolerances in the Leg socket joint
- The “B” version has slightly wider tolerances, in case your machine/filament prints with tolerances that are too tight.

“Separated Parts” folder (Optional): In this folder you will find the Body and all of the Legs separated out into individual STL files that will allow you to:
- set the legs to print in another color/filament.
- make fine scale adjustments to the legs for better tolerances.
- print individual legs to replace failed parts.

”Tolerance_Test_Print” (Optional): Video Demo
- A very fast print with both “A” and “B” leg tolerances. Print it to help choose which works best for you!

-3 Walls (when using 0.4 mm nozzle. 2 Walls with 0.6mm)
-10-15% infill (I like Gyroid)

This should generally scale down to about 70% with full articulation, on a well calibrated printer. YMMV

Have you considered re-releasing with a color 3mf? It's a pain to paint the eyes on slicer.

This crab is really nice, but there is little holes on top of the eyes. I also would have loved the eyes be separated so we can print them in multi easily (like the one you made with black eyes and with stripes), or at least a 3mf colored file. Would also love if you can separate the little parts you place to join the parts on first layers from the model, so we can simply unselect them. I know it's possible to remove them by splitting the object, but sometimes the slicer move the parts, and they are really annoying to remove one by one, and furthermore they leave little damage on models.

This is a bit too advanced for my printer unfortunately. I’ve used about 200g of filament so far with no luck, I may just have to skip this one 😕

Anyone else having issues with the legs staying in the sockets or am I printing to small ? Printed on P1P @ 70% 3 walls 15% infill.

J
Jayden Riesner · November 29, 2023

mine just finished at 70% so far, no legs falling off but does seem fragile and I can see where the more you move it then it could wear it some and loosen out like i think its prob best to print at 100% or no less than maybe 90% because of all the legs. I have not cracked the elbow parts yet so we will see how that goes because the elbows on mine seem like they may not want to snap free

I would love to see a .3mf for the eyes. It doesn't come out right if I paint it in the slicer and I understand you don't want the files edited to add shapes to the eyes so the colors print correctly.

Thank you so much for making the pieces separated! I love mixing and matching colors!

ClearMindDesigns · November 26, 2023

Was there a 3MF that I missed or is it just and STL at this point. Most importantly though, awesome design :) and thank you.

These are cool crafts! Thanks! One thing I am having trouble with is the tips of the legs that move. These little things keep breaking off when moving them. Anyway to improve this? Bambu X1C, 15% infill, 85% scale, PLA + filament.

Love this crab, fabulous as always. A sea otter would be amazing

J
Jay Butcher · November 26, 2023

Anyone having issues with the eyes? No matter where I place it on the build plate I get some stretch looking marks that are usually cooling issues.

L
LuckySpoon · November 26, 2023

I had no issues and I printed 3 at once 🤷‍♂️

J
JBMemporium · November 25, 2023

Great design, as always! And the thoughtful design choices like the dots under the legs for placement make your designs stand out above the rest!

Absolutely adore this little crabby!! I’ve been trying to print one for my daughter all morning with no luck. The skirt prints perfectly, but the first layer for the claws/legs are printing weird and don’t stick. What am I doing wrong? I’m sure it’s user error 😂
