Commission: Dungeons and Desserts

Hannah still couldn’t quite believe her luck. Scoring a date with Claire felt like cheating the universe. Claire was stunning: full, inviting curves, sharp cheekbones softened by a constant half-smile, and that quiet nerdy glow that made Hannah’s stomach flip. Hannah, by contrast, was just comfortably round, bespectacled, perpetually anxious, and firmly convinced she belonged in the “cute friend” category forever.

Yet tonight she was here, palms sweaty, standing outside Claire’s front door for a Dungeons & Dragons date.

When Claire led her downstairs, Hannah’s jaw slackened. The basement had been transformed into a low-lit stone hall with faux-castle walls, flickering LED torches, and an enormous hardwood table dominating the center. It was already set with character sheets, dice towers, and an alarming number of pastel-frosted cupcakes.

“Hello, darling,” Claire purred. Her voice was like warm honey. “I hope you came hungry. Tonight’s campaign is going to be special.” She lifted a red velvet cupcake and held it to Hannah’s lips.

“New house rule,” Claire said. Her eyes glittered. “Every natural 1 or natural 20 you roll, you get fed a treat. Success or spectacular failure, either way you eat.”

Hannah’s laugh came out shaky. She was already nodding before her brain caught up. She should have known.

Months later the castle basement looked the same, but Hannah did not.

The chair beneath her had been quietly replaced with something wider and reinforced. Her thighs spilled over the edges, pressing against the armrests. Breathing felt deeper and heavier. Her once-nimble fingers, now soft and dimpled, fumbled the d20 across the table. It spun, clattered, and landed.

Again.

Claire didn’t even pretend to be surprised anymore. She simply selected another cupcake (this one salted-caramel) and leaned in close enough that Hannah could smell vanilla and warm sugar on her skin.

"Open,” she murmured.

Hannah’s lips parted automatically. The cake slid in, rich and obscene. She chewed slowly, cheeks burning, while Claire’s fingers lingered at the corner of her mouth and wiped away a stray crumb. “God, you’re getting good at those critical fails,” Claire teased. Her voice was low and fond. “Almost like the dice are trying to tell me something…”

She reached for the tray again.

Hannah groaned around the last swallow. Her belly felt tight, and her pulse was loud in her ears. Claire’s smile turned just a shade darker.

“Another one? Careful, sweetheart. People might start to think you’re rigging the rolls on purpose.”

She pressed the next cupcake gently but insistently against Hannah’s lower lip. And Hannah, helpless, aching, already reaching for her die again, opened her mouth.
