Hylian Shield breakdown: mesh, textures, final render
Hi everyone! As promised in Chapter 2, here's the first free breakdown: a stylized, game-ready Hylian Shield, from the mesh to the final render.
I'm a huge Zelda fan, and with the Ocarina of Time remake coming out on November 5, I wanted to build my own version of the shield.
The numbers
- 2,769 triangles, 1,497 vertices, a single object
- 2048×2048 PBR textures
- Modeled in Blender, textured in Substance, rendered in Cycles
How it's built
1. References first. The most important part of the modeling was gathering a lot of references. Many people, even in 2D art, feel like using references is cheating, but you can't make something good without them: an artist isn't someone with a gallery in their head who can replicate everything from memory.
2. Hard surface modeling. I built the whole shield with hard surface techniques, using proportional editing to shape the forms. I kept the mesh light on purpose, so it works in a game engine, and let the textures carry the detail.
3. UVs and texturing. I placed the seams where I thought they'd be least visible, laid the UV islands out on the grid, and baked the mesh maps in Substance. Then I texturized it with a non-destructive workflow: one layer per change, each with a black mask, so I can always go back and tweak it. Everything is PBR: base color, roughness, metallic and normal.
4. Presentation. Final render in Cycles, plus a turnaround sheet, a breakdown (beauty / clay / wireframe / topology) and a turntable, so you can see how the model is built and not just how it looks.
What I learned
I'm still learning Substance, and this project taught me a lot: how to organize layers and masks, how to build patterns like scratches, dust and rust, and how to play with roughness and glossiness to sell the material. They're not perfect, but I tried to make it as realistic as I could, and I'll do better on the next one.
Tips if you're starting out:
- Collect references before you touch the model. It's not cheating, it's the job.
- Keep every change on its own masked layer in Substance. It costs nothing and saves you when you want to fix something later.

This is fan art, made as a personal study. It's not for sale and not for distribution. The Hylian Shield belongs to Nintendo.
Next: a new breakdown, and then my first original set of stylized weapons. Don't forget the poll in Chapter 2!
Thanks for being here 🙏
