I think it was really profound how it was showing loyalty and care to your friends mattering more when real stuff happens than petty differences. they also were showing the innocence of youth through the eyes of the adults in the story. and even how they delt with her coming out, it was sad and hard but i love how it is written in this very human, innocent way like how high school kids are, erin was getting a wake up call to how her hypothetcial self-serving 'cause' is something that actually heavily affects people in their real life, and she had to see how she needed to actually put her friendships first and come to terms with how she felt in real life about gay rights when it wasn't just a slogan, like how the war is always happening in the background, with serious consequences and dangers for people, but life still goes on and so even the adults can also get lost in their petty personal differences and then things hit you with how heavy they actually are and it can either bring people together or break them further apart. it was subtle and can seem madcap and kind of all over the place, but thematically i think it captured the heart of the whole series really well and how it is both sweet and chilling how kids can be insulated from hardship by living in their bubbles with their friends, and how all of us can too until the seriousness of it or consequences of it actually touches our lives.
I think it was really effective at the end, showing the very serious things going on, and how the children/teenagers are being protected and preserving their innocence/youth/happiness. It’s easy to forget about the civil war when you’re focused on the comedy as a viewer, living through the teenagers’ perspective, but for the adults, they don’t have the luxury of being able to forget. Even sister michael was watching in a very fond/wistful way, like a “i’m glad they still get to enjoy their youth and have fun” kind of way.
Not separating your darks and colours from your whites and lights has to be a sin.
Honestly, unless I know it’s something expensive or needs special care, I throw everything together and haven’t had any problems so far. But I also don’t usually have a lot of purely white clothes to wash.
Poor Kieran! The troubles are not that recent. The good friday agreement that ended the active conflict was 1998/99. I was under 10 at the time (Rep. Ireland) and the most dramatic thing I can remember is the twin tower attacks. Also, you should listen to the credit song, The Cranberries are legendary.
As a lesbian, people assuming you’re into them is so real, and so annoying. In highschool a friend of my ex-bestie found out I’m gay and started WARNING a few of my friends, who I wasn’t out to yet, because she thought I was interested in them, I was not. It was incredibly frustrating though.
btw RUC stands for Royal Ulster Constabulary. almost exclusively protestant, abolished now and replaced as they were too tainted by their actions in 1969-1998.
