Derry Girls Episode 1

Derry girls is amazing, glad you’re loving it already! I went to an all girls’ school for 5 years and actually really enjoyed it. I like the way there are no sexist standards of “girls can’t do maths”, “girls are bad at sport,” “girls don’t understand science” - when I went to a co-ed school, I noticed girls were intimidated by guys and staying silent in class/sometimes even acting dumb on purpose to be more “feminine” and cute, whereas that whole dynamic disappears at a single sex school. I think the concept is called stereotype threat. Obviously there are many problems with sex segregation too, especially for trans kids, but that aspect of school life I really liked
I went to private school in the England, and it was a boys only school. We had a separate girls school, not too far from us, but we only interacted with each other on the private school buses home. We have some of the craziest stories from there. One time, to make an example of a student, one of our Deputy Headteachers (what you would call Vice Principals) did a morning assembly with Police officers. He publicly called out names of a few students, in front of all 1000 boys and all the teachers, and had them handcuffed by the Police in front of everyone. It turns out they were selling weed in the school. That was in my first week of High School. Safe to say that the Deputy Headteacher scared me shitless for the remaining period of my 7 years of education there
started watching yall for BTS, stuck around for HxH/anime, staying for good now that we also got Derry Girls. lmaooo I cant wait

I heard a lot about this show, excited to start watching with you guys <3
This show is class so glad your watching it
so I studied this period of Irish history at uni and did my dissertation on the Irish community in Newcastle including how the troubles impacted them. Basically, Northern Ireland (and the UK in general) was experiencing a near 4 decade sectarian civil war between the Provisional IRA (and splinter groups) and Ulster Loyalist groups (pro-unity with Britain). The British army was sent in by British PM Harold Wilson in 1970, officially to keep the peace and enforce law and order. It was a mess. By the 90s the worst of it was over but there were still terror attacks, deaths and so on. To this day, the constitutional status of NI remains a key political point in their politics.
So excited!!!
Kinda sad about the sidemen stuff because I watched mainly that don’t have any interest in to anime I guess I’ll watch this now 🫡
The embarrassment will not stop lol
Me and Alex are the same bro back in 6 grade I asked to go to the bathroom and she didn’t let me go so I peed on myself then my mom transferred me I think it was a while ago but I remember it like yesterday 😭
Surprise Friday night dinner didn’t win, bit sad about thst, same with taskmaster. :(
Well, let's see what this is about.
This is set in the 1990s in Northern Ireland before the Good Friday Agreement. At this time, Irish Republican and Unionist terrorism and violence was common both there and on the mainland. Catholics and Protestants were often separated (famously by a wall in Belfast) and had (and have) separate schools. The Catholic schools were single-sex at this time. Heinz who has been in Sidemen Videos is from Derry.
Glad you're both starting this show! If the accent is familiar to you it's because it's set in and about the same place that Heinz Baines (Beano) is from that you know from Sidemen videos.
Excited to dive into this new show! Also, if you need another recommendation, check out the British sitcom Some Girls. It’s basically The Inbetweeners but with high school girls.
Yay!
