This is a very late comment and I haven't checked other comments if they have clarified, but about the Chinese language. It isn't quite a syllable language. Although each character does represent a single syllable sound, that sound is also an entire word. So like the character 火 is pronounced huo, and it translates as the word fire. Big fire would be 大火 where 大, pronounced da, is the word big. So unlike English or Japanese where each letter has a sound but a collection of letters makes up words, the characters themselves are the sounds and words.

The Caravan countries from the western regions from the Li Country (Fictional China), are inspired from real life central asian countries and people groups. And Gyokuyou is a princess from a western state of the country. Which kind of explained her red hair and green/jade eyes. The Yenisei Kyrgyz people were described in ancient Chinese sources as having red hair and green or blue eyes, and their phenotypes are still present in some Central Asian groups like modern Uyghurs, Kazakhs, and Tajiks.

I think you're getting the wrong read on the Old Lady that kept Fengxian in secrecy. We know Lakan wasn't at fault because we SAW the flashback. The Old Lady probably thought he abandoned her after getting her pregnant. She didn't even know, unless Fengxian told her, if it was consensual. I think the whole story is just tragic because of lack of good communication and bad timing.

Remember the lady that threw away the rhododendron from episode 1 season 1? That was Shin.

****SPOILER****** The reason why the old lady didn't want Lakan to meet Fengxian (MaoMao's Mom) is because the old lady is Fengxian's mom. She's just being protective of her daughter (Fengxian) for what she's been through. The reason why old lady is taking care of MaoMao when she's in the brothel is cause she's her grandchild.

It's always a pleasure to rewatch the wholesome interactions between Maomao and Xiaolan. They naturally adopted each other as big and little sisters, this is adorable.

In regards to Granny's reason for hating Lakan and keeping him and Fengxian separated all these many years, here're a few things to keep in mind: - It was Fengxian who hated Lakan and didn't want to see or hear anything about him. After waiting for him for months and years with no answer, Fengxian herself believed that Lakan had just abandoned her and their baby. This was very very hard on her and even drove her to madness, since she was a very prideful woman. And now, with no value as a courtesan, she had no choice but to become a streetwalker, leading to the syphilis infection and her mental health deteriorating even further. So yeah, when Lakan did finally show up 3 years later, it wasn't just Granny who didn't want to hear a thing he said, it was Fengxian too, and that's assuming she even had much of a mental state to have much of a conversation to begin with by that point. - The Verdigris House almost went out of business because of what Fengxian and Lakan did. Now sure, Lakan himself had no idea that Fengxian wanted his baby to lower her value and to be bought by him. But, since it's unlikely that Fengxian explained all of that to Granny, all she probably knew was that Lakan got Fengxian pregnant and thus had a significant part of the responsibility and blame after what happened. And this is doubly so once Fengxian decided to wait for Lakan and keep the baby, since at that point the House could no longer save face once MaoMao was born and Lakan failed to show up. That made the reputation of the Verdigris House go to the bottom for a few years. - Lakan DID abandon Fengxian. Now sure, we know it wasn't his fault, but the end result was still the same. Lakan is an awkward and creepy dude, and while his face blindness and apparent autism probably have a lot to do with this, that doesn't change the fact that he's probably not perceived all that favorably by a lot of people (the audience included throughout most of Season 1). So, when he up and disappeared for 3 years, chances are that no one was exactly running up to offer him the benefit of the doubt. Probably the only one who was somewhat willing to give him some time was MeiMei, and even then, back then she wasn't yet one of the 3 Princesses, so it's not like her opinion would have had any weight. It's been said that it took Lakan 10 years to even be allowed back into the Verdigris House, and by then, Lakan had been trying to go see MaoMao, since he had been led to believe that Fengxian was gone/dead. And since MaoMao herself had no interest on him, then of course, the Verdigris House had no reason to go against her wishes and they did their best to keep the apart. - This last one is a very minor and inconsequential SPOILER, but I'll mark it as such anyway, just in case, so: . . *** SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER *** . - It's been hinted and the fans have long suspected that Granny is the mother of Fengxian and thus the real grandma of MaoMao. I don't think it's ever been confirmed even on the light novels, but apparently, the author did at some point confirm this on social media. This would explain why MaoMao was kept around and raised by them and Fengxian was kept in the Anex and cared for for so long, in spite of all the damage she did to the House and the fact that she basically just became a burden to them. So yeah, Granny redirecting all of that potential hate and anger she might have felt for her daughter and granddaughter into Lakan makes perfect sense too. . . *** SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER *** . So yeah, Granny had no reason to believe that anything good could come from reuniting the bed ridden and mentally unstable Fengxian with the man who abandoned and caused her to end up on that state to begin with, even if ultimately, the whole thing is a tragedy and it wasn't his fault.

Btw the cat’s name is written differently than our girl Maomao’s. It is pronounced the same way, but cat Maomao means “fur” (毛), and our girl Maomao means, well, “cat” (猫/貓).

I won't confirm nor deny your theories about Loulan but, when the story finally gives you an answer, remember to rewatch that part about her at the end of episode 4.
