Canute was real. The scene of the waves actual happened. The real king Canute did this in order to prove that men power is useless against nature

i think the reason the showed young Askeladd, Helga and Leif at the end was to show those moments at the START of their adventure, and then they show Thorfinn with his new look, also ready to start his adventure, meaning all this was "just" the character setup and development :D and Thorfinn is NOW at the start of his adventure. Until now he was a slave to revenge and then an actual slave, now as a free man, he's ready to go do what he's actually supposed to do. I loved your discussions in this eposides. You really outdone yourselves. You have been reactors worth watching along this masterpiece of a story... The anime adapted until chapter 100 of the manga. The manga is near the end (there's less than 10 chapters left), and now it has 218 chapters. So the anime could have 2 more seasons easily. I hope next season comes out soon (2027 most probably). PS: by the way, the author is named Makoto Yukimura. The guy is a genius. Hope you learn his name for season 3 lmao
Diogenes is the philosopher you’re mentioning, and he was one hell of a character, he lived by the ideals of cynacism. My favorite story of him was one day he heard that Plato had philosophically defined men as “featherless bipeds” a description he was applauded for, and Diogenes thought that was stupid, so he ripped a chicken clean of its feathers and burst into Plato’s school, and paraded around with it yelling “Behold! Plato’s man!”
I think the actual name of the philosopher he mentioned (as opposed to Diogenes, who he meant, as you said) was Epictitus, who was, in fact, pretty epic. He was kidnapped as a young man by pirates, was sold into slavery, earned his freedom by impressing the hell out of his master and founded a Stoic school (in Rome, IIRC). His philosophical bent was pretty much "Don't sit around waiting for God to wipe your nose, do it you own damn self!".
If you guys are really interested in this time period, then I highly suggest you listen to the "Rest is History" Podcast. There's a series of episodes that covers the Viking period up until the Norman invasion. This includes the real life histories of Sweyn, Thorkell, and Canute. Canute's sister Estrid had a dynasty of Danish kings spanning almost 400 years. You want to listen from Episodes 549 to 557.
