Dev Update! 3/18/24
Hey, friends! How's everyone doing this week?
First, a quick state-of-things update: Current render count for Chapter 9 stands around 650. Of those, roughly 600 are in the script, with the remaining 50 or so being setup/test renders for scenes occurring later in the chapter. I'd planned to put out a new test build for $15 supporters yesterday, but realized I needed some renders to finish up a scene. As is typical for me, I thought, "Hey, this won't take too long!" Six hours later, I'd posed just over 50 new renders. As of this morning, they were still processing. Being that I'm stuck at my day job all day today, I'll have to get the new build done tomorrow. I've already got all the code checked, and the vast majority of the images in place. So, it shouldn't be too much of an ordeal.
As you can see above, I also started working on some early test renders for a scene featuring the one and only Viola Pavlischeva! These were done mostly just to test lighting, costumes, poses, etc. You can see Viola's got a little skin poke-through in her shoulder, which has been an issue before. So, I'll address that before moving forward.
It's also been fun to return to a set I've used before, and see how much I'd borked the lighting, etc. back then. This time around, the dressing room is way brighter, the lights have a soft pink tint for warmth, and I think it just generally looks better, while really changing nothing but the lighting. I also plan to address that corner of the wall, where the textures don't line up. See, Neon's learning! ;D
Now, for a slight bummer, I want to address the future of Friends Indeed, and its continued existence on Patreon. If you're a $5 supporter you can skip this bit, as I've already talked about it.
Basically, Patreon recently updated their terms of service/content policy with some new restrictions. To wit, "It is paramount that Adult/18+ creators demonstrate consent in all works (real or animated; photo, video, written, audio) between adult participants or characters; specifically, a freely given, specific, informed and unambiguous indication of consent by a statement or by a clear affirmative action. Additionally, participants and characters must be able to give consent (i.e. not be under the influence of alcohol, drugs, hypnosis, blackmail)."
Longtime supporters will likely remember that I made the decision many, many months ago to basically develop two games in tandem -- Friends Indeed, which is vanilla in terms of content, and designed for Patreon, and my unnamed game, which has content that's a bit more risque, and is supported by another subscription platform better suited for its subject matter.
I felt confident that Friends Indeed would comply with all of Patreon's rules, and developed future content/storylines with that in mind. But, the new restrictions have kind of thrown a wrench into my plans. For one thing, people drink and do drugs in my universe, and sometimes that leads to erotic acts. So, do I need to omit Ashe's date scene, where she had some wine and a cocktail? Do I need to remove Risa's office scene, as she'd smoked weed and taken a study drug beforehand?
Then there's a villainous character like the newly-introduced Lucien, who clearly has a thing for exploiting women -- which is a bit hard to effectively portray, if every sexual action needs to show "freely given, specific, informed and unambiguous consent." I mean, I do my best to frame it off-camera and non-explicitly as possible. But, is that enough? Who knows. At one time, it was enough just not to glamorize or portray those acts in a positive light. So, I planned the chapters with that restriction in mind -- but now there's a new restriction.
As a result, I feel a bit stuck at the moment, and I'm trying to figure out the best way forward. It's a little dispiriting, to be honest. For now, I'm just going to move ahead as planned with the next update. But, once it's completed and I've paused pledges to take my planned hiatus, I'm going to do a bit of soul-searching and see if it makes sense for me to keep Friends Indeed on this platform. Patreon's been very good to me, and I really love the community I've built here. But, at some point it might just make more sense to divorce Guy's story from this site entirely, and use this spot for something else, which might be a better fit for Patreon.
Okay $5+ supporters, you can come back now.
So, that's where things stand at the moment. I'm going to continue working on the chapter as planned, and deal with what comes next once I go on hiatus.
In terms of the actual content of Chapter 9, I'm very excited! We get to see a ton of the love interests in this one, there's a big cliffhanger, a lot of dramatic developments.. It's going to be fun! I'm thinking the total render count will end up around 1200+, which means I need to get my butt in gear a bit. But, even if I find the deadline slipping, I'm going to resist the urge to push this one out early. I feel like it really deserves to be played in one installment, without being broken up into chunks. Plus, people get mad at me when I put out small updates, anyway.. :'D But rest assured, I'll be here every week to keep you in the loop.
I'll leave you all that to chew on. As always, take care of yourselves, and thank you for your support!

Well Patreon is going to lose way to many creators and developers...I mean what exactly is so bad in their eyes ?? There are movies and tv series where characters do all this kind of things on tv all around the world yet they have a problem with that being in a project where it's strictly for 18+ years old viewers/players ,this is wrong in many ways , I would recomend to you to consider going to Steam but it has restrictions there as well and i am not sure if that would be in your best interest
Steam does seem to have mellowed out somewhat based on some of the more vile acts present in certain titles in my Steam library. Admittedly, there are types of content that will always be flagged, but others appear to be more subjective and dependent upon the individual who reviewed the title for compliance with what is allowed on Steam rather than some universal principle applied by Steam. I will say that I do have titles in my Steam library that touch upon dark content and subjects that go as far or farther than the themes present in this work. So this title may be able to be released on Steam without any notable issues, restrictions, or modifications.
I'll offer my support here for as long as you're on the platform. Unfortunately, I will not be able to follow you to SS should the worst case scenario occur as my bank flags transactions with SS for money laundering. I learned this the hard way when law enforcement stopped by for a nice, long chat. I can and will buy the game on Steam once the title appears there. As for additional potential revenue, especially should this platform crackdown further, some developers have released what I could best describe as "Support the Developer" or "Donation" DLC for their titles on Steam. In fact, one such DLC is called Donation DLC. Regardless, these particular DLC clearly state that they do not add any new content, that they are purely for the purpose of supporting the developers further, and that they should only be purchased if you fully understand that you will not receive anything and just want to offer the developer further financial support. Just thought I'd mention this given that Steam appears to be okay with such DLC existing on the platform and considering the potential loss of one particular funding source given ongoing developments as well as the overall trend.
Hey mate, i had the same problem in Australia. Two work arounds, Paypal, accepted almost everywhere and no such limitations or use a pre-paid Visa from the post office, you transfer money onto it monthly as required, doesn't flag SS as Money laundering
I'd rather follow you to Subscribestar than have the game go completely vanilla. Personally don't enjoy games with nice guy MCs and romance driven storylines.
I can’t link to it, but I’m already on that platform. 🙂
Friends In Need is the reason I subscribed.
A lot of people miss this.. But check the “About” section, here. On Patreon I only offer Friends INDEED, which is vanilla. I have other platforms for my other projects. I just can’t link to them from here. 🙃 I’m brainstorming options going forward, but it’s too early to discuss them. 👁️👁️
TLDR: Jump to Subscribestar. Most adult games on Patreon are going to get kicked sooner or later, it's just the way it's going. Steam went through the same for years before calming down.
I’m already on alternate platforms, I just can’t really directly advertise them here. Because — rules. 🫠
A big cliffhanger and a hiatus with an uncertain future for the game. Doesn't feel like the best time for a big cliffhanger. Not only can cliffhanger update endings be annoying because the wait just feels all the longer, but as things are, it's not even going to be clear when or even if there will be an update that will resolve the cliffhanger. Kind of wish that you would reconsider this big cliffhanger idea at such a time.
I understand your position, but rest assured, I won't be abandoning Guy and the girls' story. The only thing in doubt is whether it will continue *here.* One of my goals for this year is to expand my distribution to other services like Steam and Itchio, so that there's not so much importance placed on a single platform. As to the cliffhanger -- ultimately, each chapter kind of ends on a cliffhanger anyways. Usually it's just something a little less ground-shaking, like Brent leaving a threatening text, or Lucien's ominous appearance, or Nicki showing up in a disheveled state.
Maybe don't *publish* your game on patreon? There may be other ways to have creative freedom and still monetize your creativity on patreon, while keeping in line with the tos...
Unfortunately, that's not really a viable option. Patreon's TOS don't allow you to fund rule-breaking content on their platform, while distributing it outside Patreon. It's my hope that I'm just making mountains out of molehills, and reading too much into Patreon's legalese. I just want to give everyone advance warning, in the event that I ultimately need to pull the game from here.
I hope that in the future of the story MC can help Viola Pavlischeva become a singer ,even help her manage her singing career
Absolutely! It pays to have a friend like MC. :D
This is a very corporate phrasing that Patreon is using there. Kind of stops a lot of benign creativity in their tracks.
Patreon is really playing with fire here. There are tons of mainstream games (the Witcher series comes to mind off the top of my head) that would fail this test. Many novels, movies, primetime TV shows... It seems insane that Patreon is holding adult games to higher standards than the FCC does to television studios
Patreon is turning to shit.
If Patreon continues the way they are going at it now, they will lose 75% of games being made there. And since a LOT of the income Patreon has comes from adult games, they will lose heaps of income when someone else starts a better site for content creators.
Unfortunately, I think the reality is that Patreon's grown to such a point that they no longer really need the headaches that come with policing adult content. If you have comedians on your platform, hosting a podcast with 100,000+ monthly supporters, it's much more appealing to aim for that market, than deal with adult content creators at all. I don't really bear any ill will towards Patreon, at all. They've gotta do what's right for their business, just as I do. It's just super unfortunate timing, as we're just coming to a point in the story where we're seeing Guy confronted by a villain that checks a lot of the 'no-no' list. :/
Most AVNs have scenes while/after drinking, smoking. Depends on how hardcore they are about enforcing it, I guess.
Hopefully you can manage to find a solution. these updated restrictions are way too much if you ask me.
From playing around a bit with Daz it might take me 6h to pose one render and be happy with it. I dream of a day I can pose that many.
Honestly, it all depends on the scene. I have some days where I only do ten or fifteen, because it’s a lot of weird poses, etc. But, once I have a scene set up, lit, etc. it’s mainly just a matter of moving cameras around, and having minor changes of pose, expression, etc. One day I’ll do a livestream of my process. 👁️👁️
